Missing Chicopee kayaker found deceased, DA says; another man from separate Conn. River incident still missing

HOLYOKE — Nicklas Delisle, the Chicopee kayaker who went missing on the Connecticut River earlier this month, has been found dead, officials said.
Delisle, 27, was found by the Hampden County Sheriff's Department Marine Patrol Unit early Friday afternoon in Holyoke near the South Hadley line, according to Rob Rizzuto, public information officer for the Sheriff's Department.
The site was not far from where Delisle's kayak originally capsized, Rizzuto said.
Delisle went missing on May 19 while on a fishing trip with his girlfriend, Mya Ballard, 23. Ballard was rescued that evening by a passerby, according to Delisle's uncle, Nevin Bastin, at the time.
Bastin declined to immediately comment Friday about the news.
The search for Delisle began almost immediately after he disappeared around a bend in the river. Multiple agencies, including the Sheriff's Department, the Western Massachusetts Regional Dive Team, the Massachusetts State Police, the Connecticut River Task Force, Westfield Fire Department, Holyoke Fire Department, Chicopee Police Department, Southwick Police Department, South Hadley Fire District 1, Agawam Fire Department, and Northampton Fire Department, used resources to locate Delisle.
'This is a tragic loss, and we extend our deepest condolences to the Delisle family,' said Hampden District Attorney Anthony Gulluni. 'We appreciate the professionalism and compassion shown by everyone involved in the search and recovery efforts.'
The incident remains under investigation by the State Police Detective Unit assigned to the DA's office.
Meanwhile, it has been more than 80 days since Daniel Callahan, a 26-year-old from East Windsor, Connecticut, went missing in the river.
In April, bright signs about the missing man were posted along the Connecticut River in the Nutmeg State, including information about where he was last seen and what he was wearing.
On March 9, shortly after midnight, authorities received a report that a man had walked into the river at the end of Walter Street in Chicopee.
The following day, Callahan's car was pulled from the water.
A multi-agency search also was ongoing for Callahan, but had slowed in April.
The search for him is still ongoing, according to Nick Cocchi, sheriff of Hampden County.
'I am thankful that we, along with all our law-enforcement and first responder partners, were able to bring closure to one of the families on the Connecticut River. We send our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Niklas Delisle,' Cocchi said in the DA's statement. 'But we will remain on the water searching for Daniel Callahan in an attempt to bring his family some peace.'
Callahan's family could not be immediately reached Friday afternoon.

Xavier Hernandez death: El Paso DA gets investigation, likely to go to grand jury

An investigation into the death of Xavier Guadalupe Hernandez during an arrest on the side of a freeway is now in the hands of the El Paso District Attorney's Office. It will likely go to a grand jury to determine if criminal charges will be filed against police officers. Hernandez, 30, died in a controversial case recorded on an El Paso Police Department body camera video that raised criticism over how police handled what started as a call about a pedestrian on Interstate 10 and ended with Hernandez's death on July 13. More: El Paso medical examiner rules man who died in police struggle as a homicide El Paso District Attorney James Montoya, in an emailed statement on Wednesday, Aug. 20, said his office has now received the investigation conducted by El Paso police. "While the case is pending, we cannot offer any other comment about it specifically," Montoya stated. "However, it is the policy of the DA's Office to present all in-custody deaths and officer-involved shootings to a grand jury of El Pasoans for their review and determination of potential criminal liability." EPPD body camera video released this week showed Hernandez in an agitated state on the shoulder of the busy freeway in a situation that quickly escalated into a struggle as an officer repeatedly shocked him with a Taser. "Officer, what's your badge number?" Hernandez repeatedly yells in the video, which shows Hernandez stop breathing while handcuffed behind his back and held facedown on the asphalt by officers. An autopsy by the county medical examiner's office deemed Hernandez's death a homicide caused by "asphyxia due to chest compression during law enforcement subdual and restrain" with cocaine toxicity as a "significant" factor. DA: Grand jury to look at police deadly force cases Montoya, a Democrat, took office in January after defeating former Republican DA Bill Hicks in the November 2024 election. Montoya previously had an unsuccessful run for DA, losing to Yvonne Rosales in the 2020 Democratic primary. Rosales later ended up resigning from office amid accusations of incompetence and Hicks was appointed by Gov. Greg Abbott to fill in the remainder of her term. During the 2020 campaign, police brutality was a hot topic amid the George Floyd protests, Black Lives Matter movement and the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2020, Montoya said in an El Paso Times interview that incidents in which police use deadly force should be automatically investigated. "Whether that is a discharge of a firearm, some kind of chokehold, any type of deadly force, including a Taser, which I believe is deadly force, will be presented to an El Paso grand jury for their review for potential criminal charges," Montoya said in 2020. Emmanuel Haro Case: Authorities Seize Dad's Vehicle Amid Investigation

Originally appeared on E! Online Authorities are sharing updates on the search for Emmanuel Haro. Nearly one week after Rebecca Haro reported her 7-month-old son's kidnapping from a California parking lot, the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department confirmed that they had seized a car from the family. The Sheriff's Department told E! News that detectives had collected husband Jake Haro's car on Aug. 19 as evidence amid the ongoing investigation, following "inconsistencies" in Rebecca's story. E! News has reached out to Jake's attorney for comment and has not yet heard back. Rebecca alleged that she was attacked in a Big 5 Sporting Goods store parking lot in Yucaipa, about 70 miles east of Los Angeles, on Aug. 14, while changing Emmanuel's diaper. "I took him out of the car seat and laid him on the chair," she told NBC Los Angeles on Aug. 17. "I had his diapers here, and someone said, 'Hola.' I couldn't turn, and I don't remember nothing. I got up from the floor and didn't see my child. Someone took him from me." More from E! "Investigators interviewed multiple individuals, including Emmanuel's parents Jake and Rebecca Haro," the Sheriff's Department shared in an Aug. 16 press release. "During those interviews, Rebecca was confronted with inconsistencies in her initial statement and declined to continue with the interview." Authorities noted that due to the information they'd received, "investigators are unable to rule out foul play in the disappearance of Emmanuel." A closer look at the Haro household uncovered Jake's June 2023 felony conviction for child cruelty from a 2018 arrest, according to Riverside County Superior Court records obtained by The Orange County Register. He was ultimately sentenced to 180 days in jail and 48 months of probation. Despite authorities sharing that Rebecca "declined to continue with the interview" in connection with Emmanuel's disappearance, per the county's press release, Jake's legal counsel Vincent Hughes asserted that his client is more than willing to work with officials. "I'm telling you right now, Ashleigh, on national news," he told Ashleigh Banfield on NewsNation's Banfield Aug. 19, "if the San Marino County Sheriff's Department would like to speak with Jake Haro, we can make that happen tonight. I'm telling you that." For more information on other disappearances, keep reading. JonBenét RamseyNicole Brown Simpson & Ron GoldmanTupac ShakurNotorious AnthonyElizabeth Short a.k.a. Bodies of missing mother, infant found in California canal

Authorities in Central California confirmed they recovered what preliminarily appears to be the bodies of a woman and her infant who disappeared more than a month ago. According to information from The Fresno County Sheriff's Office, Whisper Owen, 36, and her 8-month-old daughter Sandra McCarty were last seen about 5 p.m. on July 15 in Fresno. Owen, the agency initially reported, was driving a silver, 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer from Fresno home to Elk Grove with her daughter before she disappeared. The city where Owens and her daughter live is just south of Sacramento. Fresno County Sheriff spokesperson Tony Botti told USA TODAY the San Joaquin County Sheriff's department searched a waterway near Highway 120 in San Joaquin County and confirmed Owen's vehicle was located in it with two individuals inside over the weekend. The victims identity will be released by the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Department and the Coroner's Office, Botti said Monday, Aug. 18. "We have sent two Fresno (police) detectives to the scene at Highway 120 and Victory Road to continue our investigation and work with the sheriff's department regarding details of the recovery," Botti said. "We continue to provide support to Whisper and Sandra's family through our detectives and will also provide additional support to the family through our Fresno Police and Fire Chaplaincy." Dive team helped locate missing mother, daughter in canal On Sunday, Aug. 17, San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office deputies located an adult and an infant in the vehicle in a canal, Heather Brent, a public information officer for the agency, said at the scene of the recovery. The official cause of death for the mother and daughter remained under investigation on Sunday. It was not immediately known whether foul play is suspected in the case. But a dive team member who helped locate the SUV and pull the vehicle from the water told CBS News Sacramento it appeared Owen took a wrong turn and backed into the water where a recovery team found her and her daughter in the SUV. Richard Owen, brother of Whisper Owen, thanks the dive teams who searched the canal and brought his family closure. After the bodies were found, the victim's brother, Richard Owen, thanked deputies, first responders and volunteers for their efforts. "We find some closure in the fact that we know where they are," the victim's brother Richard Owen told local ABC10. "Just knowing that that baby had to leave this world... and not actually grow into the person she could have been... it's sad to know that her siblings will not get to know what kind of personality she had and we'll never get to see who she would have grown up to be." How did Whisper Owens and her daughter die? An autopsy will determine how the infant and her mother officially died. The California Highway Patrol (CHP), which had issued an Endangered Missing Advisory for the pair, is investigating how the vehicle wound up in the water. USA TODAY has reached out to the CHP.
