State tourism dept goes corporate ahead of Visit Johor Year 2026
ISKANDAR PUTERI: Tourism Johor has been corporatised as part of efforts to enhance the state's tourism sector, says Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi.
He said the former state government department became Majestic Johor Tourism Sdn Bhd in February, as per the decree of Johor Regent Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim.
'This is to strengthen Johor's tourism sector and ensure that Visit Johor Year 2026 becomes a success.
'I acknowledge that I am not a tourism expert, and that is why we have formed (this company).
'We need to identify and appoint professionals who are experts in this field,' he said during the state assembly sitting at Bangunan Sultan Ismail here on Wednesday (May 21).
Onn Hafiz said this in reply to questions from Norlizah Noh (BN-Johor Lama), Liow Cai Tung (PH-Johor Jaya), Andrew Cheh Kah Eng (PH-Stulang) and Hasrunizah Hassan (BN-Pulai Sebatang), who asked about the state government's efforts to promote Visit Johor Year 2026.
"Through this corporatisation, we aim to focus on launching large-scale promotional campaigns and organising international-level tourism events.

School holidays bring opportunities to local economy in Johor
JOHOR BAHRU: The school holidays since May 29, which brought joy to students and families, are a boon for hawkers, homestay operators and local communities around tourist hotspots in the state. A Bernama survey of several popular locations including the Johor Bahru City Square, Johor Zoo and the Johor Bahru City Council (MBJB) City Forest found that the presence of domestic tourists has increased sharply since the start of the holidays, thus providing a surge in income for street food vendors, souvenir vendors and homestay operators. Food vendor Halimah Abu Bakar, 48, said her sales during the school holiday season increased by 50 per cent following the increase in the number of customers at her stall. 'On weekdays, we receive around 100 customers, but during the holiday season, the number increases to 150 a day. Most of the customers are from other states and Singapore. 'Although we have to open our stall early and return late at night, the effort is worth it because the daily income increased almost three times compared to normal days,' she said when met by Bernama at her stall located around Hutan Bandar MBJB here today. Meanwhile, ice cream vendor Hasimi Md Isa, 41, said the school holiday season is like the 'harvest season' that he has been waiting for. 'During this school holiday, my ice cream sales can reach more than RM50 a day compared to RM30 a day. This school holiday is indeed a much-anticipated moment for local hawkers following the increase in the number of tourists coming to the state,' he said. The presence of tourists from outside Johor, such as Kuala Lumpur, Melaka and Pahang, also contributes to the increase in local economic activities, especially homestay operators around the hotspots. Homestay operator Suraya Abd Majid, 38, said all units advertised on digital platforms had been booked a week before the holiday began, showing high demand for affordable accommodation outside the countryside. 'Many families also choose to stay in homestays because they can cook and save money. Homestays are also a choice because their facilities are more family-friendly. 'For this school holiday season alone, my homestay in Kempas has been fully booked until June 7. In fact, I have often received calls from people wanting to book a homestay within two to three days recently,' she said when contacted by Bernama. On May 29, the media reported that Johor Unity, Heritage and Culture Exco, K. Raven Kumar, announced that 80 per cent of hotel room reservations in tourist hotspots in Johor had been filled in conjunction with the first term school holidays. The school holidays are expected to end on June 10, and local traders, hawkers and homestay operators hope that this momentum can continue ahead of Visit Johor Year 2026.

KUALA LUMPUR: Dubai-based MBS Global Holdings, which manages over US$14 billion in assets worldwide, has expressed strong interest in positioning Johor as its next strategic investment hub in Southeast Asia. Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi said the state government held a high-level meeting with MBS Global on May 29, in Kuala Lumpur, where the firm outlined its investment appetite in key sectors such as digital technology, Islamic digital banking, green innovation and real estate. "MBS Global's interest is a strong signal of Johor's rising profile among global institutional investors. We view this as a potential catalyst for high-impact investments that can generate quality jobs and spur inclusive economic growth," he said. The firm is no stranger to ambitious ventures. Its recent US$8.8 billion investment to develop a blockchain-based financial hub in the Maldives is projected to create over 16,000 jobs by 2030. Onn Hafiz said Johor's appeal has been further strengthened by the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) initiatives, which offer cross-border advantages and regional market access to international players. "The Johor government is committed to turning investment into real benefits for the people, not just in figures, but in the form of job creation, technology transfer and sustainable economic development," he said. Decade-long wait ends for buyers of abandoned Simpang Renggam housing project
JOHOR BARU: After more than a decade of waiting, buyers of the abandoned housing project in Taman Permata Layang, Simpang Renggam, Johor, have finally received their Eligibility Certificate for Home Ownership (SLMR). Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi said he had the honour of personally handing over the certificates to the buyers of the project, which comprises 47 units of affordable homes priced from RM42,000 each. "This project is especially close to my heart as it is located in my own constituency of Simpang Renggam, and I have been championing it since I first became an elected representative. "Resolving the issue was no easy task — it required on-the-ground efforts, careful planning, and close collaboration between various agencies," he shared in a Facebook post yesterday. Onn Hafiz expressed hope that this achievement would serve as a stepping stone towards resolving other abandoned housing projects across Johor. He added that the state government remains committed to addressing sick and abandoned projects to prevent similar issues in the future. He also thanked Johor Housing and Local Government Committee chairman Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor, the Johor Housing Development Corporation, the South East Johor Development Authority, the Kluang District Office, and the Simpang Renggam District Council for their contributions in making the project a success.
