Decade-long wait ends for buyers of abandoned Simpang Renggam housing project
JOHOR BARU: After more than a decade of waiting, buyers of the abandoned housing project in Taman Permata Layang, Simpang Renggam, Johor, have finally received their Eligibility Certificate for Home Ownership (SLMR).
Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi said he had the honour of personally handing over the certificates to the buyers of the project, which comprises 47 units of affordable homes priced from RM42,000 each.
"This project is especially close to my heart as it is located in my own constituency of Simpang Renggam, and I have been championing it since I first became an elected representative.
"Resolving the issue was no easy task — it required on-the-ground efforts, careful planning, and close collaboration between various agencies," he shared in a Facebook post yesterday.
Onn Hafiz expressed hope that this achievement would serve as a stepping stone towards resolving other abandoned housing projects across Johor.
He added that the state government remains committed to addressing sick and abandoned projects to prevent similar issues in the future.
He also thanked Johor Housing and Local Government Committee chairman Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor, the Johor Housing Development Corporation, the South East Johor Development Authority, the Kluang District Office, and the Simpang Renggam District Council for their contributions in making the project a success.

Teacher loses RM23,000 to phone scam
KANGAR: A female teacher in Pauh, Arau lost RM23,000 after she was believed to have been duped by a phone scam syndicate of individuals posing as a Touch 'n Go officer and the authorities on May 29. Arau district police chief Supt Ahmad Mohsin Md Rodi said the 26-year-old teacher received a phone call from an individual introducing himself as a Touch 'n Go officer at 12.21pm while she was at school, informing her that her Touch 'n Go had been used to steal money from someone else's account. The teacher made the money transfer transaction on the same day," he said in a statement on Tuesday (June 3). Supt Ahmad Mohsin said the teacher only realised she had been scammed after checking the information again and lodged a police report the next day on May 30. "This case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code and further investigations are being conducted by the Commercial Crime Investigation Division of Perlis IPK. Callabio, Sanomedical to start operations at SAIP

Callabio will run the Herb Processing and Product Line facilities to produce nutraceuticals, pharmaceuticals, herbal-based medicines, and drinks. Sanomedical will operate the Cosmetic Lab to manufacture medical products. The move is expected to boost local industry, create jobs, and support the Sabah Maju Jaya agenda. Both firms signed lease agreements with SAIP, each placing deposits of RM125,000 and RM100,000 respectively. The signing was witnessed by Sabah Industry Development and Entrepreneurship Minister Datuk Phoong Jin Zhe.
