JB car washes reclassified as high-risk over Singapore-only allegations

JOHOR BARU: Car wash centres in the city have been reclassified as high-risk businesses following repeated breaches of regulations, prompting tighter licensing conditions and stricter enforcement by the Johor Baru City Council. Its mayor Datuk Mohd Haffiz Ahmad said the decision was made during a recent meeting of the council's licensing committee, in response to persistent non-compliance among operators. "Operators have consistently failed to adhere to wastewater treatment standards, caused damage to public roads, and neglected to maintain proper premises. "They will now be subject to increased scrutiny, including mandatory worker registration and infrastructure inspections," he said after chairing its full council meeting at Menara MBJB today. He warned that failure to comply could result in licence suspension or cancellation under existing laws and regulations. The move follows public backlash over a car wash outlet in Taman Abad that allegedly prioritised Singapore-registered vehicles while turning away local customers. A viral post last week claimed that foreign workers at the outlet had refused to service Malaysian cars, citing "full bookings from Singaporean clients". In response, Johor Housing and Local Government Committee chairman Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor instructed all local councils to take firm action against outlets that exclusively served foreigners, calling such practices unacceptable and grounds for licence termination. Haffiz said the city council's enforcement officers had conducted checks but found no formal complaints lodged, and the claims remained unsubstantiated. "We are monitoring the situation closely. If such discriminatory practices are confirmed, we will revoke the licence," he said, adding that premium 'water wax' services, priced from RM40, were being marketed primarily to Singaporean customers. Earlier, the New Straits Times reported that some outlets charged up to RM80 for "water wax" treatments. There are currently 543 licensed car wash outlets operating under the city council's jurisdiction. Last year, 53 unlicensed centres were shut down. As of June this year, a further 33 illegal operators have been identified and are being dealt with.

Johor Approves 42 Data Centre Projects In Q2 2025

JOHOR BAHRU, July 29 (Bernama) -- Johor approved 42 data centre construction projects in the second quarter of this year, positioning the state as a leader in the country's digital investment and a strategic destination for high-tech, knowledge-based economic growth in the region, said Johor Housing and Local Government Committee chairman Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor. In a Facebook post, he stated that data centres serve as a key driver for the implementation of the Johor-Singapore Economic Zone, the Johor Digital Plan, and the state's border economic transformation agenda. He made the statement following the Johor Data Centre Development Taskforce meeting, which was co-chaired by Johor Public Works, Transport, Infrastructure and Communication Committee chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh, and Johor Investment, Trade, Consumer Affairs and Human Resources Committee chairman Lee Ting Han. Mohd Jafni said the meeting also reviewed seven new applications for data centre development in the Greater Johor Bahru area. He said the task force represents a holistic approach by the state government, coordinated by Johor Town and Country Planning Department (PLANMalaysia) and involving key technical agencies in the state. Mohd Jafni said the state government prioritises the development of data centres in planned industrial zones such as Ibrahim Technopolis (IBTEC) in Kulai, the Sedenak industrial area, and the Pasir Gudang industrial zone, as these locations offer strategic advantages, including direct access to major highways, high-capacity power grids, stable water supply, and proximity to ports and international airports. He added that a total of 7,618 acres of planned industrial land have been allocated for data centre development, including areas under the Pasir Gudang City Council, such as ASM Green, Rising Gateway, Iskandar Halal Hub, Kosmo, and Keck Seng, as well as IBTEC under the Kulai Municipal Council. 'IBTEC, developed by Johor Land Group, alone has allocated 600 acres specifically for data centre development,' he said, adding that the state government will also limit new approvals for data centre construction in areas under the Johor Bahru City Council and Iskandar Puteri City Council to avoid land use conflicts with residential areas. 'The approval process for data centres in Johor is highly transparent and based on genuine technical requirements. Each application must comply with noise and heat control measures, architectural design standards, energy capacity requirements, as well as disaster and environmental risk management considerations.

JOHOR BAHRU: Johor has approved 42 data centre construction projects in the second quarter of 2025, solidifying its status as a leader in digital investment and high-tech economic growth. The announcement was made by Johor Housing and Local Government Committee chairman Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor, who highlighted the state's role in advancing the Johor-Singapore Economic Zone and Johor Digital Plan. The Johor Data Centre Development Taskforce, co-chaired by Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh and Lee Ting Han, reviewed seven additional applications for data centre projects in Greater Johor Bahru. The task force, coordinated by PLANMalaysia, ensures a structured approach involving key technical agencies. Mohd Jafni emphasised that data centres will be strategically located in industrial zones like Ibrahim Technopolis (IBTEC), Sedenak, and Pasir Gudang. A total of 7,618 acres of industrial land have been allocated for such developments, with IBTEC alone dedicating 600 acres. To prevent land use conflicts, new approvals within Johor Bahru City Council and Iskandar Puteri City Council areas will be limited. Johor's three-day housing expo records RM886mil in property sales

JOHOR BARU: The Johor Property Expo (JPEX) 2025 recorded RM886 million in transactions over three days, reflecting public confidence in the state's push for inclusive and high-impact housing delivery. Affordable housing under the Rumah Mampu Milik Johor (RMMJ) programme contributed RM173 million to the total. Johor Housing and Local Government Committee chairman Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor said RM7.96 million worth of affordable homes were sold on the first day, with more than RM151 million recorded on the final day. "The numbers are a clear signal of pent-up demand for reliable, quality homes at accessible prices," he said. The expo drew 180,324 visitors, the largest turnout since the event's inception. Organised by the Johor Housing Development Corporation, the expo was held in response to the Regent of Johor Tunku Mahkota Tunku Ismail's decree that the people's welfare be placed at the heart of all policies. "Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi also called for swift, transparent and high-impact housing delivery," said Jafni, adding that the expo served as a key platform to translate those goals into action. Open-market properties, including subsales, accounted for RM454 million in transactions, while Bumiputera ownership saw strong performance with RM249.8 million recorded over the three days. The expo also served as a catalyst for the local economy, with small traders operating on-site kiosks earning RM36,778 in revenue. Digital uptake surged as well, with 2,584 new registrations recorded for the state's eRumah Johor platform, a move in line with Johor's ongoing digital transformation of its housing application systems. "JPEX 2025 is no longer just a showcase; it is a delivery platform. The rakyat's response affirms our direction," Jafni said.
