Pune police busts gangs that stole cell phones, gold ornaments during Palkhi processions
Officials said that a number of thefts and robberies had been taking place during Palkhi processions over the years. To prevent these crimes and to catch the perpetrator behind them, the Crime Branch has assigned dedicated teams for select zones in the Pune City jurisdiction. Teams from Zone 5 and 6 received specific inputs about some suspects committing these crimes. Based on the first set of inputs, police arrested five members of an inter-district gang including four women.
The suspects have been identified as Chandani Shakti Kamble (32), Rita Namdeo Damble (35), Babita Suraj Upadhye (57), Pooja Dhiraj Kamble (35) all residents of Udgir in Latur district and their male accomplice Ganesh Vilas jadhav (30), a resident of Akkalkot in Solapur district. In their searches, the police have recovered over 220 grams of gold ornaments.
Working out a separate set of inputs, another team of the Crime Branch found out that two suspects were involved in multiple thefts and snatchings of the cell phones from the Warkaris. They arrested Arbaz Naushad Shaikh (19), a native of Sahibganj in Jharkhand and detained his 17-year-old accomplice. Police recovered from their possession as many as 14 stolen cell phones.
Senior officials of the Crime Branch have appealed to warkaris and devotees who have lost their cell phones and gold ornaments during the palkhi processions to report the theft to local police stations.

The Press Club of India (PCI) and the Indian Women Press Corps have expressed dismay at the FIR against senior journalists Siddharth Varadarajan and Karan Thapar of The Wire by the Assam Police's Crime Branch, invoking sedition charges under Section 152 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The organisations said this was the second such FIR against the news platform in two months. They alleged the Assam Police unleashed vindictive actions against the journalists through the Crime Branch in Guwahati. 'It is noteworthy that the summons were issued on August 12, 2025, even as the Supreme Court bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi had granted Mr. Varadarajan and all journalists at The Wire protection from any coercive action in an FIR (0181/2025) filed by the Assam Police in Morigaon on July 11, 2025 under Section 152 and other provisions of the BNS. Now, the Assam Police have filed another FIR without mentioning any reason and have asked Mr. Varadarajan and Mr. Thapar to appear before the investigating officer at the Crime Branch in Guwahati on August 22 — on pain of arrest in the event of non-compliance,' the statement added. 'Section 152 now a tool to target media' The organisations said in May 2022, the Supreme Court had ordered the suspension of proceedings and criminal prosecutions for sedition under section 124A of the erstwhile Indian Penal Code. 'Section 152 of BNS is a repackaged version of Section 124A. In its writ petition last week, The Wire has also challenged the vires of Section 152, BNS and the apex court issued notice to the Assam government and others,' the journalists' bodies said. 'While we welcome the relief given by Supreme Court to The Wire and Mr. Varadarajan last week, the registration of a new case against him and Mr. Thapar makes it apparent that Section 152 has become a tool with which to target the media in India,' they said, demanding immediate withdrawal of these cases against the senior journalists, as well as the withdrawal of the 'draconian' Section 152 of BNS, which 'threatens freedom of expression as enshrined in Article 19(1)a of Indian Constitution'. 'As can be seen from the actions of the Assam Police, Section 152 of BNS has been weaponised to chill the press into silence,' they said. The FIR is apparently based on complaint filed by a BJP leader over a story published in The Wire on June 28, based on a presentation by India's defence attache to Indonesia, Captain (Indian Navy) Shiv Kumar.

CB to take two more accused on remand
CUTTACK: The Crime Branch of Odisha Police will take Sanatana Bisoi, president of ex-cadre teachers' association of Koraput district and Ramjee Prasad Gupta, a businessman of Cuttack's Badambadi locality on remand in the second phase for interrogation in connection with the Special OTET question paper leak case. Sources said the Crime Branch had prayed the JMFC-3 court for a two-day remand of the duo on August 21 and 22 but the court allowed their remand for one day on August 21. The agency will grill Bisoi and Gupta to elicit more information on the sale of the leaked question papers and to ascertain the money trail. Earlier, the officials of the investigating agency had taken BSE's data entry operator Jitan Moharana and working president of state ex-cadre teachers' association Bijaya Mishra on two-day remand. During interrogation, both had confessed to their role in the question paper leak. In his statement, Moharana had revealed that he obtained the question papers from the laptop of the BSE vice-president using a pen drive well before the examination. He printed hard copies from a printer, placed the pen drive and the papers in an envelope, and drove to Nayagarh, where he handed it to Mishra's brother. Subsequently, Mishra transferred Rs 2.5 lakh to Moharana's bank account via UPI. The leaked papers were later sent to Ambodala in Rayagada, where accused Prasant Kumar Khamari, a teacher at government upper primary school at Bhejipadar in Bhawanipatna, translated them using Google Translate and rewrote them by hand to cover up the leak.

Guwahati Police summons journalists Siddharth Varadarajan, Karan Thapar in sedition case
GUWAHATI: The Guwahati Police has summoned senior journalists Siddharth Varadarajan and Karan Thapar in connection with a case registered on sedition charges, according to the notices. The two journalists have been asked to appear before the Crime Branch of Guwahati Police on August 22. The identical summonses, a copy of which is with PTI, stated, "It is revealed that there are reasonable grounds to question you to ascertain the facts and circumstances from you, in relation to the present investigation." The police have not shared any information about the case. Repeated calls made to senior police officials to know about the case remained unanswered. While Varadarajan's summons was received on August 14, Thapar got it on Monday. "Failure to attend/comply with the terms of this notice can render you liable for arrest," the summonsed added. The summonses were issued by Crime Branch Inspector Soumarjyoti Ray, and he referred to an FIR (No.: 03/2025) registered at the Crime Branch under sections 152, 196, 197(1)(D)/3(6), 353, 45 and 61 of the BNS. Section 152 of BNS addresses acts endangering the sovereignty, unity and integrity of India. It effectively replaced Section 124A of the IPC, which was put on hold by the Supreme Court in May 2022.
