Mindef investigating UTM Palapes cadet's death during military training after mum suspects foul play
Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said a special committee had been formed and included representatives from the Higher Education and Home Ministries, The Star reported today.
'I was informed that a post-mortem has already been conducted, but we are still waiting for the results.
'At the Malaysian Armed Forces level, we have established a committee to investigate the cause and circumstances of the victim's death,' he was quoted as saying after the Pasir Gudang Umno division meeting here earlier.
Syamsul Haris Shamsudin, a Universiti Teknologi Malaysia undergraduate in his second semester, collapsed after suffering a seizure during training as a reserve officer at the Army Combat Training Centre on July 28.
He was rushed to the Kota Tinggi Hospital but pronounced dead while under treatment.
His mother who lives in Perak has since filed a police report alleging possible foul play after discovering injuries on his body and is demanding an investigation.

Elderly man beaten to death, son nabbed
Kuala Krai police chief Mazlan Mamat said the suspect would be taken to the magistrates' court tomorrow for a remand application. PETALING JAYA : An elderly man is believed to have been beaten to death with a blunt object in Kampung Baru Kuala Gris, Dabong, Kelantan early this morning. Kuala Krai police chief Mazlan Mamat said police received an emergency call about the incident at 7.30am from a member of the public. He said a team from the Kuala Krai police headquarters and Dabong police station rushed to the location and found the 74-year-old victim lying in a pool of blood in the kitchen. 'Initial investigations show the victim was struck on the head with a blunt object, which caused serious injuries. He was confirmed dead at the location. 'Police detained the victim's 30-year-old son and seized a broken chair,' Bernama reported him as saying. Mazlan said the suspect tested positive for methamphetamine in initial urine tests. He was a former inmate of the Batu Jong satellite prison in Kuala Krai for drug trafficking, having been released in early July. 'Since his release, the suspect has been living with the victim and his mother. Checks also found that the suspect has seven previous criminal records, five related to drug cases and two cases of criminal intimidation,' he said. Mazlan said the victim's body was sent to the Sultan Ismail Petra Hospital's forensic unit for a post-mortem. The suspect will be brought to the magistrates' court tomorrow for a remand application. He said the case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.

Pahang deputy police chief Azry Akmar Ayob said they received a report from a 32-year-old manager who said the casino chips were taken from a closed casino room at the resort. 'An initial police investigation has identified a 44-year-old man as the suspect,' Bernama reported him as saying today. He said the case is being investigated under Section 408 of the Penal Code for CBT, which carries a minimum penalty of one year and a maximum of 14 years in prison, as well as caning and a fine, upon conviction.
