Digital Ministry drafting AI bill to combat deepfake videos
'The legislative draft is currently being refined through a comprehensive and inclusive engagement process involving various stakeholders.
'This approach is taken to ensure that the forthcoming legislation is holistic, balanced, and aligned with current technological developments as well as the nation's needs,' he said in a written parliamentary reply to Wong Chen (PH-Subang).
Gobind added that the government has introduced the National AI Ethics and Governance Guidelines (AIGE), which outline seven core principles, including fairness, transparency, accountability and privacy protection, that must be observed by AI developers and users.
Last month, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said said Malaysia is studying to develop AI legislation to address legal complexities in the digital age.
She further said that she has formally written a letter to Gobind, proposing a meeting between the Legal Affairs Division (BHEUU) and the Digital Ministry to initiate a discussion on drafting new AI laws.
According to Azalina, at present, Malaysia has no specific laws focused on AI because, unlike traditional technologies, AI operates on an entirely different platform.

'We do not know how many seats we will have, and how many seats they will have. 'Remember that, in Malaysia, differences in views are conventionally based on differing party 'colours'. We are willing to forget our different 'colours' for the sake of political stability,' he was quoted as saying. The Umno-led BN played a crucial role in enabling Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to form the unity government in the wake of the 2022 general election, which resulted in a hung Parliament. PH had won 81 parliamentary seats while BN won 30, in what was the latter's worst electoral performance to date.

PETALING JAYA : Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has reminded his political opponents to continue discussing and raising their concerns to him in Parliament, not only on the streets, following the Turun Anwar rally held today in the city centre. In a Facebook post this evening, he said he remains consistent as prime minister in his belief in democracy and freedom of speech and criticism. 'Criticism and differences of opinion should not be viewed through the lens of opposition, but should grow to become the national heartbeat of a mature, progressive and sovereign citizenry. 'We champion this principle at the Prime Minister's Question Time in Parliament, where MPs are free to raise their criticisms directly to me as prime minister. I call on everyone to urge your MPs to continue attending and actively participating in all parliamentary sessions, particularly PMQT,' he said. About 18,000 people took part in today's rally, according to police, although the rally organisers, PAS Youth, claimed a tally of over 200,000 participants. PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said the turnout was a vote of no confidence against Anwar, and called on him to resign instead of waiting for a confidence motion against him in the Dewan Rakyat. Anwar also thanked the security and medical personnel from the police and fire department, as well as volunteers, for doing their duty at the rally. He wished the rally's participants safe travels back to their hometowns, and reminded them not to forget to return to visit Kuala Lumpur and its historical landmarks in the future. 'These landmarks around the city centre are now being restored at a large scale so we can improve our tourism, especially for Visit Malaysia Year 2026,' he said.

China proposes global AI cooperation body amid US tech rivalry
SHANGHAI: China said on Saturday it wanted to create an organisation to foster global cooperation on artificial intelligence, positioning itself as an alternative to the U.S. as the two vie for influence over the transformative technology. China wants to help coordinate global efforts to regulate fast-evolving AI technology and share the country's advances, Premier Li Qiang told the annual World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai. President Donald Trump's administration on Wednesday released an AI blueprint aiming to vastly expand U.S. AI exports to allies in a bid to maintain the American edge over China in the critical technology. Li did not name the United States but appeared to refer to Washington's efforts to stymie China's advances in AI, warning that the technology risked becoming the 'exclusive game' of a few countries and companies. China wants AI to be openly shared and for all countries and companies to have equal rights to use it, Li said, adding that Beijing was willing to share its development experience and products with other countries, particularly the 'Global South'. The Global South refers to developing, emerging or lower-income countries, mostly in the southern hemisphere. How to regulate AI's growing risks was another concern, Li said, adding that bottlenecks included an insufficient supply of AI chips and restrictions on talent exchange. 'Overall global AI governance is still fragmented. Countries have great differences particularly in terms of areas such as regulatory concepts, institutional rules,' he said. 'We should strengthen coordination to form a global AI governance framework that has broad consensus as soon as possible.' SHANGHAI HEADQUARTERS The three-day Shanghai conference brings together industry leaders and policymakers at a time of escalating technological competition between China and the United States - the world's two largest economies - with AI emerging as a key battleground. Washington has imposed export restrictions on advanced technology to China, including the most high-end AI chips made by companies such as Nvidia and chipmaking equipment, citing concerns that the technology could enhance China's military capabilities. Despite these restrictions, China has continued making AI breakthroughs that have drawn close scrutiny from U.S. officials. China's Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu told a roundtable of representatives from over 30 countries, including Russia, South Africa, Qatar, South Korea and Germany, that China wanted the organisation to promote pragmatic cooperation in AI and was considering putting its headquarters in Shanghai. The foreign ministry released online an action plan for global AI governance, inviting governments, international organisations, enterprises and research institutions to work together and promote international exchanges including through a cross-border open source community. The government-sponsored AI conference typically attracts major industry players, government officials, researchers and investors. Saturday's speakers included Anne Bouverot, the French president's special envoy for AI, computer scientist Geoffrey Hinton, known as 'the Godfather of AI', and former Google CEO Eric Schmidt. Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who has in past years regularly appeared at the opening ceremony in person or by video, did not speak this year. Besides forums, the conference features exhibitions where companies demonstrate their latest innovations. This year, more than 800 companies are participating, showcasing more than 3,000 high-tech products, 40 large language models, 50 AI-powered devices and 60 intelligent robots, according to organisers. The exhibition features predominantly Chinese companies, including tech giants Huawei and Alibaba and startups such as humanoid robot maker Unitree.
