Bahrain has reiterated its steadfast support for international and regional efforts to promote peace, security, and respect for international law during a high-level parliamentary meeting in Geneva.
The Bahraini parliamentary delegation emphasized that the Kingdom's foreign policy is guided by the principles of the United Nations Charter, prioritizing political and peaceful solutions, supporting UN-led initiatives, and backing multilateral mediation efforts. The delegation noted that adherence to international law is the key to global stability and a safeguard against conflicts.
Bahrain also reaffirmed its commitment to constructive cooperation with friendly and allied nations, reflecting the vision of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa. The delegation highlighted that sustainable development can only be achieved in an environment of security, stability, and mutual respect among nations.
The statements came during Bahrain's participation in a high-level meeting titled 'Upholding the UN Charter and International Law to Ensure Global Peace and Security', hosted by Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf on the sidelines of the 6th Conference of Speakers of Parliament, organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union in Geneva from July 29 to 31.
Bahrain's delegation was led by First Deputy Speaker of the Council of Representatives, MP Abdulnabi Salman Ahmed, and Dr. Bassam Ismail Al Binmohammed, member of the Shura Council's Foreign Affairs, Defense and National Security Committee.
The delegation stressed that Bahrain's legislative authority actively supports the government, led by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, in reinforcing international law through national legislation. They added that Bahrain's upcoming membership in the UN Security Council for 2026–2027 reflects the Kingdom's growing global role and the international community's trust in its balanced and peace-driven approach.
Finally, the delegation underlined that parliamentary partnerships play a crucial role in promoting human values and fostering international cooperation, reaffirming Bahrain's commitment to participating in global initiatives that strengthen parliamentary diplomacy and collective peace efforts.

Hunt for truth as aid deaths rise : US envoy visits Gaza sites, promises more food

President Donald Trump's special envoy promised a plan to deliver more food to Gaza after inspecting a US-backed distribution centre yesterday, as the UN human rights office said Israeli forces had killed hundreds of hungry Palestinians waiting for aid. The visit by Steve Witkoff came as a report from global advocacy group Human Rights Watch accused Israeli forces of presiding over 'regular bloodbaths' close to US-backed aid points run by the private Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF). The UN human rights office in the Palestinian territories said at least 1,373 people had been killed seeking aid in Gaza since May 27 — 105 of them in the last two days of July. 'Most of these killings were committed by the Israeli military,' the UN office said, breaking down the death toll into 859 killed near GHF food sites and 514 along routes used by UN and aid agency convoys. Witkoff said he had spent more than five hours inside Gaza, in a post accompanied by a photograph of himself wearing a protective vest and meeting staff at a GHF distribution centre. 'The purpose of the visit was to give POTUS a clear understanding of the humanitarian situation and help craft a plan to deliver food and medical aid to the people of Gaza,' he said, referring to Trump. Trump himself echoed this in a phone call with US news site Axios, touting a plan to 'get people fed.' 'We want to help people. We want to help them live. We want to get people fed. It is something that should have happened a long time ago,' Trump said, according to Axios. The US leader repeated Israeli claims that Hamas is responsible for stealing much of the aid that makes it into Gaza, but did not say whether his plan would involve reinforcing GHF or creating a whole new mechanism, the report said. The foundation said it had delivered its 100-millionth meal in Gaza during the visit by Witkoff and US Ambassador Mike Huckabee.

Portugal May Recognise Palestinian State at UN in September

Portugal is considering officially recognising the State of Palestine during the United Nations General Assembly in September, Prime Minister Luis Montenegro's office announced on Thursday. The move comes amid growing international concern over the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where a UN-backed agency has warned of a 'worst-case famine scenario.' Portugal's government said the decision follows 'multiple discussions' with European and international partners, as the situation in the region continues to deteriorate. Officials pointed to both the humanitarian crisis and growing fears over the potential annexation of Palestinian territories by Israel. If confirmed, Portugal will join countries like France, Britain, and Canada, which have all signaled plans to recognise a Palestinian state this year. French President Emmanuel Macron recently said his country would take the step in September, hoping to build international momentum for Palestinian recognition. Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said the decision was made carefully and in coordination with European allies, reflecting Portugal's concern for both the humanitarian situation and the future of the peace process.

At Geneva Conference, Bahrain Renews Call for Two-State Solution for Palestine

Bahrain has reaffirmed the importance of dialogue and international parliamentary cooperation as a path to achieving lasting peace and justice in a world facing increasing political and humanitarian challenges. Speaking at the 6th World Conference of Speakers of Parliament in Geneva, Jamal Mohamed Fakhro, First Deputy Chairman of the Shura Council and head of Bahrain's parliamentary delegation, said that today's complex global crises demand collective action and multilateralism. 'Constructive dialogue creates sound policies that serve mutual interests and protect nations and people from the tragedies of wars and conflicts,' Fakhro said. He emphasized the growing role of parliaments in promoting good governance, building trust between nations, and upholding international law and human rights. Fakhro also addressed the deepening humanitarian crises caused by armed conflicts, climate change, and widening development gaps. He stressed that history has repeatedly shown that 'lasting peace can only be achieved through honest and responsible dialogue based on shared values and mutual respect.' Highlighting Bahrain's commitment to peace and human dignity, he renewed the Kingdom's call for an international conference to resolve the Palestinian issue based on the two-state solution. He condemned the ongoing suffering of Palestinians, particularly in Gaza under the current blockade, and urged the global community to ensure the establishment of a sovereign, viable Palestinian state along the June 4, 1967 borders. Fakhro urged parliaments around the world to embrace their historic role in building a culture of peace, not just as a political slogan but as a legislative and moral responsibility that ensures social and economic justice. He called on the Inter-Parliamentary Union to continue championing just causes and acting as a voice for the world's conscience. Despite global instability, he expressed hope that international institutions, led by the Inter-Parliamentary Union, could help steer the world toward peace and prosperity. 'Hope will never fade as long as parliaments stand firm on principles and give voice to the aspirations of people,' he concluded. Bahrain's delegation to the conference included Jamal Mohamed Fakhro, MP Abdulnabi Salman Ahmed, and Dr. Bassam Ismail Al-Benmahmood, a member of the Shura Council's Foreign Affairs, Defense, and National Security Committee.
