BEML, DRDO sign Transfer of Technology pact

Bengaluru, June 9 (UNI) In a major thrust to India's defence indigenisation drive, BEML Limited has signed three Licensing Agreements with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) for the Transfer of Technology (ToT) to manufacture critical mobility and support systems for the Indian Army's Armoured Corps.
The agreements were signed with the Vehicles Research and Development Establishment (VRDE), a premier DRDO laboratory, and will enable BEML to indigenously produce the Unit Maintenance Vehicle (UMV) and Unit Repair Vehicle (URV) for MBT Arjun, as well as a Full Trailer for 70-tonne Tank Transporters with advanced hydraulic suspension.
The Licensing Agreements were formally handed over by Dr Samir V Kamat, Secretary, Department of Defence R&D and Chairman, DRDO, to Sanjay Som, Director (Mining & Construction), BEML Ltd, at a ceremony held at VRDE, Ahmednagar on June 7.
Also present were G Ramamohana Rao, Director, VRDE; Dr Prateek Kishor, Director General (Armament and Combat Engineering), DRDO; senior DRDO scientists, and industry representatives.
"This collaboration is a milestone in strengthening the Indian Army's operational capabilities with next-generation indigenous solutions, fully aligned with the Government's 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' initiative," said BEML Chairman and Managing Director Shantanu Roy.
The transferred technologies include two critical support vehicles for the Arjun Main Battle Tank (MBT) fleet. The Unit Maintenance Vehicle (UMV) is designed to perform first-line maintenance and light repairs on electrical and mechanical assemblies in field conditions, ensuring the tank's operational continuity.
The Unit Repair Vehicle (URV) serves as a second-line repair system, capable of conducting field repairs on vital components, thereby improving the uptime and combat effectiveness of the Arjun MBT fleet.
Additionally, the Full Trailer for the 70-tonne Tank Transporter has been developed to move heavy armoured vehicles like the Arjun MBT Mk-1A. This trailer features a modular hydraulic suspension system and steerable axles, offering enhanced mobility and manoeuvrability across a variety of terrains, including metalled, gravelled, and unpaved roads.
The agreement reflects BEML's expanding role in building a robust indigenous defence manufacturing ecosystem and meeting the evolving demands of modern warfare.

IAF to acquire more teeth through AWACS and mid-air refuellers

The ministry of defence is set to take up a proposal for acquisition of six more Embraer aircraft from Brazil for conversion to Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) using DRDO developed Netra Mark 1A mounted AESA radars in a move aimed at plugging key capability gaps and building conventional deterrence, people familiar with the matter said. The proposal will be brought before the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) headed by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh shortly, they added, asking not to be named. In addition, while the government has approved wet lease of one KC-135 mid-air refueller from US-based Metrea military contractor, it has also pressed the pedal on the acquisition of six more mid-air refuellers on the basis of an RFP floated by the acquisition wing of the Defence Ministry. India at present has six Russian refuellers. The urgent need for AEW&C aircraft was felt because the Pakistan air force has eight SAAB-2000 aircraft fitted with the Erieye radar system plus four Chinese ZDK-03 aircraft used for electronic warfare and electronic support measures. PAF also has three Dassault Falcon DA-20 aircraft, which are being used for electronic warfare. After Operation Sindoor, Pakistan has seven SAAB-2000 Erieye AEW&C aircraft, as one was shot down by the Indian S-400 air defence system from a distance of 314 kilometres during the four-day high-intensity skirmish. The AEW & C aircraft is used to look into enemy territory from a distance of as much as 350 km away to identify incoming enemy aerial platforms as well as artillery firing from across the border. Pakistan also has four Russian refuellers of the same IL-78 M variety as India. After the military chiefs and national security planners met to discuss learnings from Operation Sindoor on June 7, 2025, a consensus has emerged that India needs to build better and more lethal capabilities, as Pakistan will acquire more capabilities from China . China is providing Yuan-class diesel submarines, frigates and armed drones to Pakistan, while Turkey is building corvettes, upgrading Augusta 90B submarines and providing spare parts for F-16 aircraft for the Islamic nation. In this context, the Indian military is also getting the weapons recovered from the skirmish, namely Chinese made PL-15 air to air missile, Fatah rockets and Turkish built YIHA drone reviewed by top Indian technology experts. India is now the only country that has war data on Chinese weapon systems like J-10, JF-17 fighters, HQ-9 air defence systems, SH-15 howitzers as well as performance of its own Rafale fighters in live conditions. India's post-Sindoor Indian assessment , HT learns, does not rule out a mass casualty attack from Pakistan-based jihadist groups in the future, with the Pakistan military better prepared next time to meet the expected Indian response to terror. Between the launch of the operation in the early hours of May 7 and the ceasefire on the evening of May 10, Indian forces bombed nine terror camps in Pakistan and PoK and killed at least 100 terrorists. The Indian Air Force also struck targets at 13 Pakistani airbases and military installations. On Tuesday, it emerged that India's targeting of locations within Pakistan during the May 7–10 clash was more extensive than previously known, with a Pakistani document acknowledging that Indian drones had struck locations ranging from Peshawar in the northwest to Hyderabad in the south. Pakistan's Operation Bunyan-um-Marsoos, which was mounted in response to Operation Sindoor, 'folded in eight hours' on May 10, belying Islamabad's ambitious target of bringing India to its knees in 48 hours, Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan said on Tuesday. Operation Sindoor was India's military response to the terror strikes at Pahalgam that killed 26 people.

Meet QRSAM – India's Strongest Rs 30,000 Cr Missile Wall That Will Crush Pakistan's Drones, Block China's Jets

New Delhi: India is set to bring home a deadly new shield, the Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missile (QRSAM) system, in a deal worth Rs 30,000 crore. It is fast and smart. And it kills moving threats in seconds. It is a mobile missile defence system designed to track and destroy enemy aircraft and drones in real-time. It reacts quickly, locks onto fast-moving targets and takes them out in a flash. This new system will be deployed near the Pakistan and China borders. Three full regiments will protect the skies. Sources say the Ministry of Defence is ready to seal the deal with the DRDO. The QRSAM is a beast in battle. It can track enemy aircraft from 120 km away. It can lock onto threats from 80 km. And it does not wait. It finds. It fires. It finishes. It works in the day. It works at night. It can move from place to place. And most importantly, it takes down moving targets at short notice. The QRSAM will strengthen India's short-to-medium range air defence, support systems like MRSAM and Akash and fill the gaps by intercepting threats that sneak in under radar coverage. With a range of 30 km, it will team up with India's other missiles such as MRSAM and Akash to trap anything that tries to enter Indian airspace. A top-level meeting is expected later this month. Sources say QRSAM could soon be inducted into the armed forces. After May's Conflict, India Moves Fast From May 7 to 10, India and Pakistan clashed in a shadow war. Pakistan fired Chinese missiles. It sent Israeli drones. But none could breach India's air shield. Akashteer, S-400 and Iron Drone systems struck them down mid-air. Not a single missile made it to its target. Akashteer became the unexpected hero. It is powered by artificial intelligence. It controls all ground air-defence systems through one brain. It connects radars, sensors and comms in real time. That edge saved lives. Difference between QRSAM and S-400 S-400 is a long-range defence system with a reach of up to 400 km. The QRSAM is for short-range and fast-reaction strikes within 30 km. While S-400 locks onto threats from far away, the QRSAM is designed to handle close-in, sudden threats like low-flying jets and drones. S-400 is the king of India's air defence. It blocks enemy missiles, rockets, drones and fighter jets. Russia made it. India bought five units in 2018 for Rs 40,000 crore. Each unit is mobile. It can move fast. Its radar sees targets from 600 km away. Within minutes, it is ready to fire. It can track 160 targets at once and launch two missiles per threat. The version India has hits from 400 km away. It can also strike threats 30 km above the ground. That makes it one of the world's most advanced defence systems. With QRSAM joining forces with Akash, S-400 and Iron Dome-style defences, India is building an air wall no missile can cross.
