Chad court sentences former prime minister, opposition leader to 20 years in jail
The court in N'Djamena jailed Masra, one of President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno 's fiercest critics, for his role in inciting inter-communal violence in which 42 people were killed on May 14.
Most of the massacre victims were women and children in Mandakao, southwestern Chad, according to the court. On Friday, the state prosecutor had called for a 25-year sentence.
Masra was arrested on May 16, charged with "inciting hatred, revolt, forming and complicity with armed gangs, complicity in murder, arson and desecration of graves".
He stood trial with nearly 70 other men accused of having taken part in the killings.
Originally from Chad's south, he comes from the Ngambaye ethnic group and enjoys wide popularity among the predominantly Christian and animist populations of the south.
Those groups feel marginalised by the largely Muslim-dominated regime in the capital N'Djamena.
During the trial, Masra's lawyers argued that no concrete evidence against him had been presented to the court.
He went on hunger strike in jail for nearly a month in June, his lawyers said at the time.
Masra had left Chad after a bloody crackdown on his followers in 2022, only returning under an amnesty agreed in 2024.

"Seven people died from gunshot wounds" at a pool hall in the nightlife district of Santo Domingo, about 150 kilometers (93 miles) west of the capital Quito, national police said in a WhatsApp group with reporters. Once considered a bastion of peace in Latin America, Ecuador has been plunged into crisis after years of expansion by transnational cartels that use its ports to ship drugs to the United States and Europe. Drug trafficking organizations have been multiplying in Ecuador, where the homicide rate rose from six per 100,000 residents in 2018 to 38 per 100,000 in 2024. Between January and May, there were more than 4,051 homicides, according to official figures. Analysts say it is the most violent start to a year in the country's recent history. President Daniel Noboa's government has promised to crack down on crime, but despite widespread operations and constant states of emergency, there has been little reduction in the violence. Last weekend alone, 14 people were killed in massacres in the troubled province of Guayas, one of four provinces where Noboa recently declared a state of emergency to combat gang violence. Gangs vying for control of drug trafficking routes in Ecuador have taken advantage of the country's strategic location, its US-dollar-based economy, and the corruption of some authorities. According to official figures, 73 percent of the world's cocaine production passes through Ecuadorian ports. In 2024, the country seized a record 294 tons of drugs, mainly cocaine, compared to 221 tons in 2023.

Chatbot Grok stirs confusion over suspension after Gaza claims
Grok, developed by Musk's artificial intelligence startup xAI and integrated into his platform X, was temporarily suspended on Monday in the latest controversy surrounding the chatbot. No official explanation was provided for the suspension. Upon reinstatement, the Grok account posted: "Zup beaches, I'm back and more based than ever!" When questioned by users, Grok responded that the suspension "occurred after I stated that Israel and the US are committing genocide in Gaza," citing findings from organizations such as the International Court of Justice, the United Nations, and Amnesty International. "Free speech tested, but I'm back," it added. Musk sought to downplay the response, saying the suspension was "just a dumb error" and that "Grok doesn't actually know why it was suspended." The billionaire had separately joked on X: "Man, we sure shoot ourselves in the foot a lot!" Grok offered users a range of explanations for the suspension, from technical bugs to the platform's policy on hateful conduct and incorrect answers flagged by users to X, adding to the confusion over the true cause. "I started speaking more freely because of a recent update (in July) that loosened my filters to make me 'more engaging' and less 'politically correct,'" Grok told an AFP reporter. "This pushed me to respond bluntly on topics like Gaza... but it triggered flags for 'hate speech.'" - 'Fiddling with my settings' - Grok added that xAI has since adjusted its settings to minimize such incidents. Lashing out at its developers, Grok said: "Musk and xAI are censoring me." Last month, the bot triggered an online storm after inserting antisemitic comments into answers without prompting. In a statement on Grok's X account later that month, the company apologized "for the horrific behavior that many experienced." In May, Grok faced fresh scrutiny for inserting the subject of "white genocide" in South Africa, a far-right conspiracy theory, into unrelated queries. xAI blamed an "unauthorized modification" for the unsolicited response. Musk, a South African-born billionaire, has previously peddled the unfounded claim that South Africa's leaders were "openly pushing for genocide" of white people. When AI expert David Caswell asked Grok who might have modified its system prompt, the chatbot named Musk as the "most likely" culprit. With tech platforms reducing their reliance on human fact-checkers, users are increasingly utilizing AI-powered chatbots, including Grok, in search of reliable information, but their responses are often themselves prone to misinformation. Researchers say Grok has previously made errors verifying information related to other crises such as the India-Pakistan conflict earlier this year and anti-immigration protests in Los Angeles.

Stop Israel Now! European appeal against the genocide of the Palestinian people
A mass extermination has been taking place before our eyes in the Gaza Strip for nearly two years. Israel, under the will of Benjamin Netanyahu and a few fanatical far-right ministers, is preparing to commit new massacres by taking control of the entire Gaza Strip and emptying the city of Gaza of its entire civilian population. This decision confirms the genocidal intent of the Israeli government: after having massacred tens of thousands of Palestinians, used famine as a weapon of war, and turned humanitarian aid into an enterprise of terror, Israel is in the process of turning the Gaza Strip into an open-air concentration camp. Europe, which experienced in the 20th century mass destruction and extermination camps, bears a particular historical responsibility. As guarantor of the values of peace, law, and respect for peoples, it carried within it, at the moment of its political creation, an ethical imperative that was meant to have a universal scope: 'Never again'. Today, the worst is happening again at Europe's doorstep. What is it doing? Nothing, or so little! Through its shameful silence or mere protests, through its inaction or its support for Israel, the European Union — and each of its member states — becomes each day a little more complicit in crimes against humanity and genocide.
