Exclusive: Rana Daggubati on Rana Naidu 2, and need to turn lens on important things
Actor Rana Daggubati is returning to play the 'fixer' in the new season of the Netflix show 'Rana Naidu'. Directed by Karan Anshuman, the season takes forward the same challenges and struggles with family dynamics that Naidu faced in the previous season. In an exclusive interview with the 40-year-old spoke about dealing with what he calls a 'harsh' world, how social media shapes opinion, and the best way to move on from an issue as an was joined by his co-stars, Kriti Kharbanda and Abhishek Banerjee in the interview, along with Anshuman. Excerpts:The trailer for the new season looks subtle compared to the use of explicit scenes and cuss words in the first season. Have you toned down the language of the show now? Kriti Kharbanda: A trailer is not supposed to tell you the story. It is only made to build intrigue. The fact that you asked this question... we've done exactly Daggubati: Last time, you saw us in a more rustic world, where there was crime in the underbelly somewhere in Mumbai. In season 2, you are dealing with another family. You are dealing with the Oberois now. There's a certain class to the problem. The language is organic to what happens to these you are doing some fabulous work on every platform. How do you react when people tell you that you are probably one of the finest actors of our generation? Abhishek Banerjee: I am very bad at taking compliments (laughs). I am just trying, honestly. I started acting very recently on the camera. Before that, whatever acting stints I did was in theatre, or giving cues when I was a casting assistant. I am still learning about the medium.I just got to know which profile is better while doing these promotions. So, I am learning the tricks, and hopefully one day, I'll be as refined as the how did you navigate your way through the dynamics of this family? As an actor, you need to find a core, something to stick to while playing a character who is facing the challenges of living in a dysfunctional Daggubati: The reason this family is so dysfunctional is why Rana is the way he is in the show. Although he is not the eldest brother, he behaves as if he is. He behaves as if everything is in control. The trauma that he has because of his father kind of really elevates in season one, and here, it's a continuation of that, and it's so much think being a part of this dynamic family is so much fun. Just be a part of this family, and see where things are going. All of that becomes more elevated, more mentioned earlier how the world is harsh towards Rana, your character. You know you have to be at a certain point in life to make that kind of observation. Tell me at what point did you realise that the world is indeed harsh?Rana Daggubati: The world is made of all kinds of people. It is a place to discover. There's nothing black-and-white. It's all in your head. It's like you've decided that a person is white, and you want them to behave in that way. You don't know that person fully of us live in a certain grey zone, while making decisions, while being somebody. It's not the easiest world to navigate. No one is standing to help you out. If you've got something in your head you want to sort, you've got to get up and do it Banerjee: The minute you leave school-college, because you are very protected in that environment. The minute you leave that phase, be a part of the working system of society. That's when you start realising what society is really made of. And then you have to find your way they say, it's a cut-throat world. Our industry is very cut-throat. It teaches us a lot - to be in an industry where you have to be constantly at the top of your game. The film industry is not for the average, not for the good. You have to be excellent. There's no other way. Being excellent is not easy. You have to have immense discipline, immense patience - all of that. Something that we don't learn from our education years is discipline. And all the time, our teachers are always asking us to be disciplined, but we never listen to them. It's only later in life that we realise how important discipline is. Rana, I would like to have your comment on the entire language row that has erupted down South, with Kamal Haasan's film 'Thug Life' not releasing in Karnataka. Rana Daggubati: Now, social media have become a place to make an opinion. Earlier, you didn't have that. Anything gets touchy and political quite Banerjee: When I came to Bombay many years back, I heard the same thing about the Marathi-Bihari and Kannada-Tamil conflict, which has been going on. I feel it's completely worthless and useless. People who don't have anything better to do, will just try and get attention while doing that Rana said in the last interview was very good. He said language, when it's used to educate people, to cultivate literature - that's great. The guys who are talking about language wouldn't even know many poems in their own language or writers in their own language. That's the problem. I don't think we should really pay much heed to can you, as an artiste, move past such issues?Rana Daggubati: If the media and the news, and people become smarter (and understand) that actors are not the ones to advocate for the way society lives - it will be a better place. I think you should look at scholars, politicians and learned men and women to lead a way into never bring a poet to the same stage. Neither do people speaking those languages. If there's a poet in Marathi who's written some fabulous poems, we wouldn't bring them and honour them like we do with film stars. If the lens turns towards more important and current things, the country would become a much better Kharbanda: The biggest problem is comparison. Comparison destroys personalities. This begins with childhood. When you are compared to someone else as a kid - 'oh, they are doing better than you', or 'oh, she did better than you' - that's where the comparison if we continue to do that as adults, you haven't learnt. Why are we comparing? No two people are the same, no two personalities can be the same and that's why they are so distinctive. Right? Why are we destroying the personality that people have worked so hard to build over the years?The second we stop comparing... why do we want to be better? We are all the best. We are working so hard to be the best version of ourselves, and instead of honouring that growth, we are constantly finding a way to bring another person down for us to feel superior. Do things that make you feel superior, but lead by Banerjee: Fighting against language, fighting for the language is completely against to expect from the show? What is 'Rana Naidu' for you? Rana Daggubati: Rana Naidu is the synergy of people from across the country who have come together on a global platform like Netflix, to make an awesome Kharbanda: Abhishek called it the only pan-India show in its real a show where people from different cultures, different heritages, different walks of life, come together to do one thing they are passionate about - which is acting. We never signed up for anything saying we would be advocates of anything else. We are not trying to set any example.
