Sex myths can be prevalent and persistent, influencing our perceptions and experiences. In the June 26 episode of Figuring Out With Raj Shamani, Dr Sankalp Kumar Jain, certified sexologist and founder of AskDrJain, Arunveda, ErectiCare Pro and Fertimacy, debunked some common misconceptions. He also shared his insights into sexual health, performance concerns, and the misconceptions that surround intimacy. Asked about 'the most destructive belief people have about sex' in India, Dr Jain said, 'That we can have sex non-stop for 30 minutes like we see in porn videos. All the penises you see in porn videos are injected with papaverine. If you do the same thing, it will be erected for 1 hour or two hour... there are also those 'extra time condoms' and the lubricant in them contains numbing agents. They are making your organ go numb and therefore giving you extra time.' What is average time for good sex?
Further asked 'what is average time for good sex', Dr Jain added, 'At least 15 to 20 minutes of penetrative sex for around 40 to 50 strokes. It is put in three categories – foreplay, roleplay and rounds.'

Almond-infused overnight oats If your mornings are hectic and you barely have time to cook, overnight oats are a game-changer. To make it, combine rolled oats with milk (dairy or plant-based), Greek yogurt for extra creaminess, a dash of cinnamon, and a handful of chopped almonds. Stir well and refrigerate overnight. Almonds are a powerhouse of nutrients. They provide vitamin E, magnesium, protein, and healthy fats, all of which contribute to better heart health and sustained energy. According to the latest Dietary Guidelines for Indians by ICMR, almonds are one of the most beneficial nuts you can include in your daily diet. So, this recipe not only keeps you full, it also gives your body the nutrition it deserves. 2. Berry chia pudding If you are in the mood for something cool, light, yet incredibly filling, a berry chia pudding is a perfect pick. To prepare, mix chia seeds with coconut or almond milk, a touch of honey for sweetness, and a few drops of vanilla extract. Let it sit overnight in the fridge to allow the chia seeds to absorb the liquid and form a pudding-like texture. In the morning, top it with fresh seasonal berries like blueberries, raspberries, or chopped mango. A few crushed almonds can add a nice bite. Chia seeds are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, fibre, and plant-based protein, which means they help you stay fuller longer while supporting digestion and heart health. It is a Wednesday afternoon and the song playing in your head on a loop is, Manic Monday by the Bangles. If you can relate to this, you're probably stuck in a rut, productivity-wise and you are dreading the to-do-task list you will need to tackle sooner or later. 'Demotivation, or being unmotivated, is not uncommon," says Mumbai-based psychologist Jenisha Shah. It is more common than you think and one needs to accept that it is okay to feel like you are stuck in a rut, especially when you are anxious, she adds. 'Quite often, the reason we feel like we're stuck in a rut is stress or burnout," explains Megha Jain, clinical psychologist, at Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences, Delhi. So how does one get back feeling motivated? 'Try breaking your tasks into smaller, manageable goals," advises Jain. 'This way, you can feel a sense of accomplishment without being overwhelmed." If you are, for instance, struggling with writing something, instead of writing long paragraphs, start small. Write two sentences, then five. Shah believes that changing your environment, going to a cafe, a co-working space, or asking a friend or relative if you could work from their home for the day, can work wonders, 'especially if you are a freelancer or an entrepreneur". She has a few more suggestions: 'Don't hesitate to reach out to friends or a professional for support, talking it out can really help. And remember to practice self-compassion—it's okay to have off days!" Decluttering your workspace or rearranging it is another way to gain clarity, according to Jain. But what about those times when you question yourself about what you are doing and why? 'Remind yourself of your sense of purpose, understand where it is taking you. Understanding your goal better will help you move forward with the tasks at hand," says Jain. 'The idea is to get going—that's what motivation is about." Talk about productivity and the idea that it's about getting more things done, checking off lists and then making more of them and Shah quickly debunks it. 'Productivity is about getting things done consistently and in a competent way. It is about doing things well rather than finishing several things in haste." Her advice? Prioritise your tasks. For example, if there's an appointment with a doctor you've been meaning to take that should be on top of your list vis-a-vis chores like, say, picking up dry cleaning or groceries. 'These are things that can easily be delegated," Shah says. Break Work into Small Tasks Another strategy that Jain strongly recommends to keep your energy (and motivation) up is the Pomodoro method. 'You can even just use a kitchen timer to work in focused bursts and take breaks," she mentions. The Pomodoro method was invented in the 1980s, by Francesco Cirillo, a university student. The technique entails setting timers for 25 minutes to focus on a task and finish it, taking a five or ten-minute break, and repeating the process all over. 'The average human's brain doesn't sustain attention for more than 20-25 minutes. With this method, one can get chunks of a task done, and the resultant feeling is quite rewarding," says Jain. For Shah, too, the technique works because each time you set your timer, your mind is forced to focus better, knowing that it takes 10-15 more minutes to complete the task. And this thinking, according to her, works well not only on those with ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) or those who have trouble focusing, but for anyone who wants to up their productivity. Rewarding oneself is an effective way to stay motivated, says Jain, because it is like giving yourself a pat on your back once a set target is reached. 'Rewarding yourself after completing tasks releases dopamine and encourages you to keep going. Just make sure your rewards are budget-friendly—think of fun, inexpensive activities or social hangouts instead of splurging on material things," says Jain. Shah believes that the rewards need to be commensurate with the type of milestone reached. For example, if you have gone to the gym consistently for a month, you could pamper yourself with a spa treatment or a meal at your favourite restaurant. 'This will push you to set bigger goals like training for the marathon next," says Shah. For both the therapists, berating ourselves when we fall behind by a few tasks is a no-go. 'Berating or disciplining yourself harshly doesn't work. The key is to find excitement each step of the way, but not let it get blown out of proportion," says Shah. Refining your to-do list can help prevent that overwhelmed feeling, says Jain. 'Focus on what's truly important and regularly review your list to keep it relevant. By setting achievable goals, creating a realistic reward system, and staying on top of your priorities, you can enhance your focus and productivity, making it easier to push through those tricky times of low motivation," Jain says. In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Ravi Malik, paediatrics, MAMC and founder and medical director, Malik Radix Healthcare said, 'Your child may appear active and healthy, but nutrient gaps can quietly affect their growth, immunity, and focus. (Unsplash) Dr Ravi Malik further shared the subtle signs of malnourishment in children that parents should watch out for: 1. Low energy and fatigue after play If your child is often tired after playtime, wants naps frequently, or struggles to concentrate, it may signal deficiencies in iron, vitamin B12, or protein. These nutrients are essential for maintaining energy and supporting brain function. Watch out for increased sleepiness, lack of focus, or sluggish behavior. 2. Hair loss or brittle strands Noticeable thinning or frequent hair breakage may point to low protein, biotin, or zinc levels. In more severe cases, you might see patches of hair loss (alopecia). Hair health is a reliable marker for nutritional status, especially protein intake. Design a nutritious diet for your child.(Unsplash) 3. Falling sick too often While 6–8 episodes of fever per year are considered normal, frequent colds, slow recovery, or recurring infections can indicate a weak immune system. This could be due to deficiencies in vitamins C, D, zinc, or protein. Watch for patterns of illness, especially gastrointestinal infections or chest infections. Delayed growth or dental issues If your child is not gaining weight or height as expected or has delayed or chipped teeth, they may be lacking protein, calcium, or vitamin D. Roughly, a 1-year-old should weigh around 10 kg, a 6-year-old around 20 kg, and a 10-year-old around 30 kg. Similarly, expected heights are 75 cm at 1 year, 100 cm at 4 years, and 137 cm at 10 years. 5. Mood swings and poor focus Frequent irritability, anxiety, or poor school performance may be linked to low levels of omega-3, iron, or B-complex vitamins. These nutrients play a key role in cognitive and emotional development. What can parents do? 'Focus on colourful, balanced meals with fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lentils, nuts, and seeds. Eggs are an excellent protein source. Encourage outdoor play for natural vitamin D. Avoid over-reliance on packaged health drinks. And most importantly, consider supplements only after consulting a pediatrician,' the doctor suggested.
