Idan Toklomati, Kerwin Vargas deliver for Charlotte over NYCFC

Idan Toklomati scored early and Kerwin Vargas tallied late as Charlotte FC came away with a 2-0 victory against visiting New York City FC on Saturday night, winning for the first time in their past five matches.
Goalkeeper Kristijan Kahlina made three saves for the clean sheet.
Charlotte (9-11-2, 29 points) won for the first time since May 31 at Toronto FC. Unlike a week earlier in a 2-2 draw with Orlando, Charlotte protected a two-goal lead.
New York City (9-8-4, 31 points) was playing in the first of four consecutive road matches. The team remained winless in matches in Charlotte.
Matthew Freese, who just returned from a stint with the U.S. national team at the CONCACAF Gold Cup, made one save for NYC.
Toklomati's goal came in the 14th minute, assisted by Pep Biel. The pass from Biel on the left side connected with Toklomati, who was cutting toward the center of the goal mouth.
It was the 20-year-old Toklomati's fourth goal of the season, with three coming in a four-match span.
The third goal of the season for Vargas snapped his five-match scoreless stretch, finishing by turning and firing a shot from just inside the top of the box for a 2-0 lead in the 81st minute. It was quite an individual effort before Vargas first controlled the ball and was denied on an initial shot before trying again and converting.
The start of the match was delayed for nearly 90 minutes because of weather concerns.

Penguins acquire goaltender Arturs Silovs in trade with Canucks

Vasquez-Imagn Images) The Pittsburgh Penguins shored up the goaltending position on Sunday as the team acquired Arturs Silovs from the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for forward Chase Stillman and a 2027 fourth-round pick. Silovs, 24, appeared in just 10 games for the Canucks this past season. However, the 6-foot-4 Latvian shined in the American Hockey League, where he led the Abbotsford Canucks to the Calder Cup Championship as the Playoff MVP. In 21 regular-season games with Abbotsford, Silovs went 14-5-2 with a .908 save percentage and a career-best 2.41 goals-against average. In leading the team to its first Calder Cup, he went 16-7 in 24 games with a 2.01 GAA and a .931 save percentage. With five shutouts in the playoffs, Silovs fell one shy of the AHL all-time record during a single postseason. He also became just the fourth goaltender to earn Playoff MVP honors. Silovs, whose contract runs through the 2025-26 season, has compiled a 59-35-13 record with a .906 save percentage and a 2.58 GAA in parts of five AHL seasons. Athletics smack three HRs to take down Blue Jays

Kurtz also doubled and scored for the A's, who have won three of four heading into the All-Star break. A's left-hander Jeffrey Springs (8-6) allowed three runs and three hits over 6 2/3 innings. He struck out five and didn't walk a batter. Davis Schneider and Addison Barger homered for the Blue Jays, who have dropped three of four following a 10-game winning starter Jose Berrios (5-4) experienced his shortest outing of the season. He allowed four runs and five hits in three innings, striking out one and walking two. Mason Miller worked a scoreless ninth for his 19th save for the A's. Gio Urshela started the second inning by rolling a single just under the glove of Toronto shortstop Bo Bichette. Berrios then hung a curveball to Wynns with one out and he blasted it over the fence in left for a 2-0 lead. After Kurtz doubled to right to start the third, Soderstrom came up with one out and lined a home run over the fence in center for a 4-0 lead. Springs retired the first 14 batters in order before Schneider homered to left with two outs in the fifth to cut it to 4-1. One pitch before, Schneider hit a deep fly that appeared to sail over the left-field foul pole. The ball was ruled foul and the call was upheld after a video review, leading to the ejection of Toronto manager John Schneider. The A's put their leadoff batter on base for the fifth straight inning when Toronto reliever Tommy Nance fielded a comebacker from Jacob Wilson and threw it over the head of first baseman Will Wagner for a two-base error to start the fifth. Justin Bruihl entered the game and immediately served up a two-run homer to Kurtz to make it 6-1.
