Mamata Banerjee urges Amit Shah to tackle provocative social media content – ‘potential to inflame communal sentiments'

Mint14 hours ago
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday wrote to Union Home Minister Amit Shah expressing concern over the rising impact of provocative social media content and cybercrime. The Trinamool Congress chief stressed the need for stringent legislative and policy interventions.
In the two-page letter to Shah, Mamata Banerjee refers to recent 'incendiary narratives, misleading stories and fake videos' on social media, which have 'significantly contributed to aggravation of criminal tendencies among certain sections of society'.
'Such content not only spreads misinformation but also has the potential to inflame communal sentiments, incite violence, disrupt societal harmony and indulge in crime against women,' Banerjee wrote.
'The instantaneous and wide-reaching nature of misuse of digital platforms amplifies these effects manifold.'
In April this year, the Muslim-majority district of Murshidabad witnessed large-scale violence, which began as a protest against the passed Waqf (Amendment) Act and quickly spiralled out of control into communal riots, resulting in multiple deaths and widespread damage to public and private property.
More recently, in June, violence of a communal nature broke out at Maheshtala under the Diamond Harbour police district in the outskirts of Kolkata. The clashes left about a dozen police personnel, including the deputy commissioner of the Port area, injured.
The state has also witnessed communal violence in districts like Howrah and Hooghly in the recent past over Ram Navami celebrations.
In the aftermath of almost all these incidents, Banerjee has remained vocal about the spread of lies and misinformation on social media which, she maintained, added fuel to the fire.
In her letter to Shah, Banerjee also highlighted the menace of an alarming surge in cybercrime which, she said, is 'growing both in complexity and in its detrimental impact'.
'From financial frauds and identity theft to online harassment and defamation, cybercrimes are exacting a severe toll on individuals and institutions alike,' the chief minister wrote.
The Chief Minister said that both provocative social media posts and cybercrimes disproportionately affect vulnerable sections of society – women, children, the elderly and the economically weak – Banerjee urged the introduction of stringent legislative measures to serve as an effective deterrent to the two crime formats.
'The current legal framework and its enforcement require further strengthening to keep pace with the rapidly evolving digital ecosystem and the sophisticated methods employed by malicious actors,' she said.
The chief minister also urged the Union Home Minister to launch large-scale awareness campaigns to promote responsible digital behaviour alongside sensitisation programmes, digital literacy campaigns, and community engagement initiatives.
Key Takeaways Provocative social media content can incite violence and disrupt societal harmony.
Cybercrime poses significant threats to vulnerable groups, necessitating stronger legal frameworks.
Awareness campaigns and digital literacy are crucial in combating misinformation and promoting responsible online behavior.

Gadkari opens purse strings for highway projects across Jharkhand

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari on Thursday said the Centre is committed to strengthening the infrastructure of Jharkhand and will implement national highway projects worth Rs 2 lakh crore in the state. Addressing a public meeting in Garhwa, the minister said so far NH projects worth Rs 40,000 crore have been completed in the state and work is in progress on projects worth Rs 70,000 crore. Apart from this, schemes worth Rs 75,000 crore are in the pipeline. The minister was in Jharkhand to inaugurate and lay foundation stones of multiple national highway projects worth Rs 6,350 crore. In Garhwa, he launched two important projects — inaugurated a 23-km-long four-lane highway from Shankha to Khajuri, built for Rs 1,130 crore, and laid the foundation stone for a Rs 1,330-crore project for widening (four-lane) a 32-km stretch of NH-39 from the Chhattisgarh–Jharkhand interstate border to Gumla. He made a series of infrastructure-related declarations for Ranchi and other parts of Jharkhand. Speaking in Ranchi during the inauguration of the city's elevated flyover, Gadkari said India's logistics cost, once as high as 16% of the GDP, has now come down to 10% and will further reduce to 9% by the end of this year. 'This will help boost exports, promote industrial growth and generate employment across sectors,' he said. The minister announced several ongoing and new national highway and expressway projects across Jharkhand. Among the major corridors mentioned were the Rs 40,000-crore Varanasi–Ranchi–Kolkata corridor, Rs 10,000-crore Ranchi–Patna economic corridor (88% work completed), Rs 13,000-crore Ranchi–Varanasi four-lane upgrade (60% completed) and Rs 18,000-crore Raipur–Dhanbad four-lane economic corridor (77% completed). He also said that 60% of the work on the Rs 35,000-crore Delhi–Kolkata six-lane corridor was over; 146 km of the corridor passes through Jharkhand. Apart from these, Gadkari announced new projects including a Rs 8,000-crore economic corridor (121 km in Jharkhand) that will reduce the Ranchi–Odisha route by nearly 100 km, and a Rs 7,000-crore 90-km stretch of the Raxaul–Haldia expressway passing through the state, which will connect regions of Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal to the Haldia port. He also mentioned bypasses, elevated roads and underpasses in Ranchi, Deoghar, Jamshedpur and other cities worth thousands of crores aimed at improving traffic flow and connectivity. Gadkari said there is no shortage of funds for infrastructure development in Jharkhand. 'Funds are not a constraint. The only hurdles are environment and forest clearances and land acquisition. The state government must resolve these issues quickly. Once that is done, I will ensure all projects are funded and implemented without delay.' Speaking in Garhwa, Gadkari said the Varanasi–Ranchi–Kolkata Greenfield Corridor worth Rs 36,000 crore will be completed by March 2028. The Ranchi–Varanasi Economic Corridor worth Rs 12,800 crore will be ready by January 2028. He said that Jharkhand's NH network, which was 2,600 km in 2014, has now increased to 4,470 km. Also, 19 aspirational districts of the state have been connected with national highways, said the minister. Parliament set for stormy session from July 21

New Delhi: The Union government has said the monsoon session of Parliament will begin on July 21 and continue till August 21, a week longer than planned earlier, signalling a heavy legislative agenda. "In view of Independence Day celebrations, there will be no sittings on the 13th and 14th of August," Rijiju said in a post on X.

India Snubs China Plan: No one except Dalai Lama can decide his successor says Rijiju

New Delhi: A day after the 14th Dalai Lama announced his succession plan, India on Thursday said the next Tibetan spiritual leader would be "chosen only by the present one and with the established conventions"-- a move seen as an apparent snub to China. Beijing has insisted that any future heir of the Dalai Lama must receive its seal of approval. Talking to reporters in New Delhi, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju noted that the Dalai Lama is the "most important and defining institution" for the Buddhists, and his successor must be decided as per the wish of the Buddhist leader himself. "And all those who follow the Dalai Lama feel that the Incarnation is to be decided by the established convention and as per the wish of the Dalai Lama himself. Nobody else has the right to decide it except him and the conventions in place," Rijiju said. The Dalai Lama is the most important institution for Tibetans and all those who follow the Nalanda tradition of Buddhism. On Wednesday, the Buddhist leader said that the institution of the Dalai Lama will continue and only the Gaden Phodrang Trust will have the authority to recognise his future reincarnation. The charismatic, Nobel Peace Prize-winning Buddhist had previously said the institution of the Dalai Lama would continue only if there was popular demand. The announcement was seen as a landmark decision for Tibetans, many of whom had feared a future without a leader, as well as for global supporters who see the Dalai Lama as a symbol of non-violence, compassion and the enduring struggle for Tibetan cultural identity under Chinese rule.
