Will Richard and top-seeded Florida run away from Maryland's 'Crab Five' for 87-71 March Madness win

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Florida's three standout seniors and its deep bench kept bringing energy until it became too tough for Maryland's 'Crab Five' to keep up.
Coach Todd Golden could see his Gators wearing the Terrapins down.
Will Richard scored 15 points, Alijah Martin added 14 points and seven rebounds, and No. 1 seed Florida played a steady second half to run away from fourth-seeded Maryland and into the NCAA Tournament's West Region final with an 87-71 win Thursday night.
Walter Clayton Jr. contributed 13 points and four assists as Florida's senior leaders and their deep supporting cast took down Maryland's hardworking starters — one of Terrapins coach Kevin Willard's concerns coming into this matchup.
'We come in with great energy," said Florida reserve Denzel Aberdeen, who scored 12 points in 19 minutes. 'Just everybody being ready, whoever's name is called, I think that's what we did.'
Freshman sensation Derik Queen scored 27 points to lead Maryland (27-9) in what might have been Willard's final game guiding the program.
'I think their bench really wore us down,' Willard said.
Florida (33-4) advances to play Saturday against the winner of Thursday's late game at Chase Center between third-seeded Texas Tech and No. 10 seed Arkansas.
The Gators, in the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2017 and seeking the program's first Final Four berth since 2014, committed 13 of their 17 turnovers in the first half but took better care of the ball over the final 20 minutes. Florida already eliminated two-time defending NCAA champion UConn in the second round and is 10-1 in regional semifinals.
"The message was simple: We have to take care of the ball," Golden, the Gators' third-year coach, said.
The 'Crab Five' — featuring WNBA star Angel Reese's brother Julian, who had his sister in the stands to cheer — roared back in the first half when it seemed Florida might pull away. Queen, who hit a buzzer-beater in a 72-71 victory Sunday over Colorado State in the second round, shot 8 for 17 and made all 10 of his free throws.
Clayton, Martin and Richard combined for 42 points and three others scored in double figures for Florida. The senior trio had scored 56 of the Gators' 77 points in the two-point victory against UConn last Sunday. That sent coach Golden back to the Bay Area, where he played for Saint Mary's and coached at the University of San Francisco before taking the Florida job.
Now, they get to extend their stay into the weekend.
'It's surreal, to be honest. The thing that I keep kind of going back to, selfishly, personally, I just don't want it to end,' Golden said. 'We have a uniquely tight group. ... It's been an amazing run.' What's next for Willard?
Willard's future was unclear as he has been linked to the Villanova job and also publicly expressed concerns last week with the direction of the Terrapins program, calling for 'fundamental changes.'
Fans booed the coach as the team departed its hotel earlier in the day.
Golden had described the Terrapins as 'freaky talented' coming into the game. Clayton from deep
Willard had compared Clayton to Stephen Curry when it comes to shooting off the dribble.
Clayton had been 22 for 43 from 3-point range — 51.2% — over his five postseason tournament games coming in. He wound up 2 of 6 from deep. Takeaways
Maryland: The Terrapins were outrebounded 5-1 early before Reese's offensive rebound, putback and three-point play at the 15:21 mark of the first half — and Maryland forced 10 turnovers over the opening 13:30 to get back in the game.
Florida: The Southeastern Conference Tournament champion Gators used their depth to generate a 29-3 advantage in bench points, with Maryland getting its first bench point with 1:15 to play. ... Sophomore forward-center Alex Condon limped off to the locker room with an injury to his troublesome right ankle at the 12:16 mark of the first half and underwent a precautionary X-ray, then returned with 13:29 left.

Rays' Junior Caminero Has Impressed At The Plate, And Also At Third Base

Carlos Pena holds the Tampa Bay Rays' record for most home runs in a season with 46. Junior Caminero will have some work to do over the season's final 30-plus games to catch the former first baseman, though he seems to be a lock in becoming the second player in team history to hit at least 40. With 35 heading into Wednesday evening's game against the Yankees, the 22-year-old is sixth on the single-season list and one behind Evan Longoria. Caminero's first full season in the majors has been a treat for Rays fans, who caught a glimpse (seven games) of the third baseman at the end of the 2023 season after he was called up from Double-A Montgomery. He then had something of a sample size last year (43 games, .248, 6 HR) after he was summoned from Triple-A Durham in mid-August. When asked about his expectations heading into this season, Caminero noted health and a home run plateau he has blown past. 'My expectation was to be healthy, which I asked God for, and I thank God for keeping me healthy,' he said prior to Tuesday's game against the Yankees, via Rays' communications specialist and interpreter, Eddie Rodriguez. 'I wanted to hit 30 homers, and I have done that. It's a matter of finishing the season healthy. I am very proud of what I have accomplished so far.' He should be. In addition to his home run total and team-leading 85 RBI while playing more games (120 through Tuesday) than any other player in a Tampa Bay uniform, Caminero has worked overtime in becoming quite a fielder at the hot corner. He has impressed in ability to bare hand dribblers and flag down blazing one-hoppers while making strong and accurate throws across the diamond. Frankly, he has made it look routine far more often than not. 'I really appreciate all the help that Brady has given me,' said the native of the Dominican Republic, of assistant hitting coach Brady North, who has worked with Caminero in the field. 'The confidence that I have right now, it's because of the work I have put in with him. I have been practicing my fielding a lot since spring training and feel that I have gotten better. I feel very good about the work that I have put in and I am really appreciative of Brady for spending all of that time with me.' Caminero wears No. 13 like the player he looks up to, Manny Machado. He has often confided in the Padres' 33-year-old third baseman, seeking playing tips and guidance on being a big leaguer. 'He's on his way to being a Hall of Famer and it's great that I can talk to him,' he said of the South Florida native with Dominican Heritage, who made his MLB debut 13 years ago this month. While Machado's resume includes more than 2,000 hits – he picked up his 2,000th on July 8 at Petco Park – to go with 362 homers and 1,121 RBI, Caminero's first full taste of the big time has been rather impressive. Consider that he is only the ninth player since 1901 to hit at least 35 homers during an age-21 or younger season. (MLB bases that on a player's age as of June 30. Caminero turned 22 on July 5.) Among others on the list are fellow Dominican Albert Pujols. Then there is the 27-year history of the Rays and Caminero's march up a single-season home run list that not only includes the aforementioned Pena and Longoria, but also Jose Canseco and Fred McGriff. He passed both of them during a 12-game West Coast trip in which he launched seven home runs. 'It feels great to have my name mentioned in those categories,' he said. 'I have put in the work and I am very proud of myself for doing it.' Then there is his work in the field, which has certainly caught the attention of his manager. 'Junior has worked on the defensive side as hard as anybody (on our team),' said Kevin Cash. 'He wants to be elite. I think he has proven on a nightly basis that he is pretty elite when he has a bat in his hands, and he wants to be elite (with the glove). He is working toward that, and I am really proud of him.'

Fantasy Football Video: Where should you be drafting De'Von Achane given his injury going into 2025?

The Miami Dolphins might be the most toxic situation going into the 2025 NFL season from a fantasy football perspective. You have the injury history of starting QB Tua Tagovailoa and the estranged relationship between the franchise and top WR Tyreek Hill. The Dolphins have been riddled with injuries throughout the offense and defense, and now perhaps the most important player on the offensive side of the ball is ailing in RB De'Von Achane. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] Head coach Mike McDaniel told reporters last week that Achane is dealing with a calf injury that could hold him out anywhere from "days to weeks" before the regular season. Matt Harmon and Nate Tice discussed the situation on the latest episode of The Yahoo Fantasy Forecast. Harmon points out the Scott Pianowski line that injuries will find you throughout the course of the fantasy season, you don't want to draft into them. McDaniel is also a tough person to trust when it comes to injuries to his players. This makes Achane a pretty risky option if you're considering him in the late-first or early-second round of your fantasy draft. Injury aside, Harmon questions if Achane would even be able to reach some kind of fantasy pinnacle given his past efficiency and role in the passing game. As a rookie, Achane burst onto the scene, averaging a gaudy 7.8 yards per carry, finishing with 800 yards and eight touchdowns in just 11 games (four starts). He followed that up with last year's near 1,500 total yards with a robust 78 catches for 592 yards. Many believe that if Achane can combine the rushing efficiency with that pass-catching role, it'll create some sort of mega-RB for fantasy football. But Harmon begs the question, what if neither of those things comes true? If that is the case and the calf injury bleeds into the regular season, it could make Achane a tough player to target that high in your fantasy draft. Or at least make him someone to target if he drops a bit from his 16.3 ADP.

NASCAR's 2026 schedule shake-up: New street race, Chicagoland's return, and more

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — NASCAR in 2026 will race on a new street course in San Diego, return Chicagoland Speedway to the schedule, move the All-Star race to Dover, Delaware, and end its 38-race season back at Homestead-Miami Speedway. The schedule released Wednesday includes two off weekends on a calendar that stretches from February to November. It begins with the exhibition Clash on Feb. 1 at Bowman-Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem for the second consecutive year, with the season-opening Daytona 500 to follow on Feb. 15. The season ends Nov. 8 in Florida at Homestead, which hosted the championship-deciding finale for 18 consecutive years before NASCAR shifted it to Phoenix Raceway in 2020. The race at Phoenix was given a different date in the playoffs and NASCAR is expected to rotate the season finale to various venues in ensuing years. Chicagoland is reopening after a six-year hiatus and a switch back to the track located in suburban Joliet after three seasons on a temporary street circuit in downtown Chicago. The San Diego event will be held on a military base in Coronado. To add Chicagoland and San Diego, NASCAR dropped the Chicago street race and will not return to Mexico City, where it held the first international Cup Series points race since the 1950s. A return to Mexico City in 2026 became difficult to schedule because of soccer's World Cup. NASCAR also moved Watkins Glen in New York from its traditional August date to Mother's Day weekend and the all-star race from North Wilkesboro, North Carolina, to Dover so that North Wilkesboro will be a points-paying Cup race, and New Hampshire lost its playoff race to become the penultimate race of the regular season. There also are two off weekends after just one this season, which ends with 28 straight races. The 2026 Cup Series schedule: Feb. 1 — Clash at Bowman Gray Stadium Feb. 15 — Daytona 500 Feb. 22 — Atlanta March 1 — Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas March 8 — Phoenix March 15 — Las Vegas March 22 — Darlington, South Carolina March 29 — Martinsville, Virginia April 5 — off weekend April 12 — Bristol, Tennessee April 19 — Kansas April 26 — Talladega, Alabama May 3 — Texas May 10 — Watkins Glen May 17 — All-Star Race (Dover) May 24 — Coca-Cola 600 (Charlotte) May 31 — Nashville, Tennessee June 7 — Michigan June 14 — Pocono in Long Pond, Pennsylvania June 21 — San Diego June 28 — Sonoma, California July 5 — Chicagoland July 12 — Atlanta July 19 — North Wilkesboro July 26 — Brickyard 400 (Indianapolis) Aug. 2 — off weekend Aug. 9 — Iowa Aug. 15 — Richmond, Virginia Aug. 23 — New Hampshire Aug. 29 — Daytona, Florida Sept. 6 — Darlington Sept. 13 — Gateway in Madison, Illinois Sept. 19 — Bristol Sept. 27 — Kansas Oct. 4 — Las Vegas Oct. 11 — Charlotte Roval Oct. 18 — Phoenix Oct. 25 — Talladega Nov. 1 — Martinsville Nov. 8 — Homestead ___ AP auto racing:
