Cannock Council declines trust's bid to run Prince of Wales Theatre

BBC News21 hours ago
An independent report has "categorically ruled out" a bid by a local group to run a Staffordshire theatre threatened with closure.Cannock Chase District Council said it commissioned a report to assess a business plan put forward by Cannock Chase Theatre Trust (CCTT) to run the Prince of Wales Theatre.Authority bosses said the report highlighted a lack of "operational detail, audience focus and financial realism" in the group's plans for the venue.CCTT said it was disappointed and its treasurer Ben Farbrother thought it too early to set out its next steps.
"It was quite a tight framework that we had to work to, so we can provide extra details that may move the needle," he said."Unfortunately I think we're being told that essentially the assessment process is over, it's now just a case of whether the council are willing to continue discussing the project further with us."The 49-page report concluded the group's proposal reflected "commendable community ambition and intent" but did not provide the "level of financial assurance, operational planning or delivery capability required for a sustainable transfer".The theatre, which was earmarked for closure last year to reduce a £1.3m gap in the council's budget, is currently closed while regeneration work takes place nearby.Maintaining the building would also require investment of more than £2m over the next three years, according to the authority.
'Difficult and challenging'
Council leader Tony Johnson said he was disappointed by the recommendation not to take the trust's proposals further but it would be "reckless and irresponsible" to ignore the report's findings."I know how much work and enthusiasm the people behind CCTT put into this and I, like thousands of others, was desperate for them to succeed and give us a viable plan we could support which would see the Prince of Wales Theatre reopen and thrive," he said."We are being asked to invest millions of taxpayers' money in refurbishing the theatre and risk leaving the council exposed to a potentially crippling financial burden if the trust cannot break even."The report recommends not proceeding with the community asset transfer and will be discussed by the council in September.

These strips fit perfectly into my busy routine, and the results are incredible! My teeth are whiter, and I feel so much more confident." However, on Amazon, some customers had differing opinions. One customer noted: "I have only just started using this, so I have not seen much difference yet but the powder leaves your mouth smelling fresh." Article continues below Another added: "I bought this as it was recommended online. I'm not a smoker and I haven't been drinking much, I do drink coffee regularly but I equally regularly clean my teeth. There's an initial improvement but I'm not sure it's what I expected. I used it every day in the first week and only noticed the difference post brushing. Shortly after that - little difference." The teeth whitening products can be purchased from MySweetSmile.

Pensioners could be set for a £500 boost to state pension next year – here's why

Pensioners could be set for a boost from April next year, with the state pension looking set to rise by up to £538. That's because of the rules around the state pension triple lock and how recent economic data sets out the likelihood of a rise. At present, increases to the state pension are decided by either inflation, wage growth or 2.5 per cent – whichever is the highest. That is to ensure pensioners' income doesn't leave them trailing as living costs continue to increase – though with people living longer and the pension bill escalating rapidly, change is likely to come in the future. Employment data released on Wednesday shows the UK job market slightly cooling, with lower vacancies at present still counteracted by wage growth – one of the three factors dictating state pension payment changes. How much is the state pension and how much will it go up? Next month is when data around wages will count for 2026/27, so this month gives a good indication of where we are headed. Right now, the full new state pension is £230.25 a week, or £11,973 per year. But with inflation expected at 4 per cent across much of the rest of 2025 and pay growth easing back to 4.6 per cent, a rise of between 4.0 and 4.5 per cent is estimated to be the outcome. That equates to £478.92 extra at the lower end, and £538.79 at the higher end of the scale. Will I need to pay tax? However, with that rise in state pension income comes another dilemma for those receiving it: the potential for paying taxes they didn't previously need to. 'This isn't the crunch month for the triple lock, but we're not far off now. Total pay is up 4.6 per cent in the year to April-June, and it's the May-July figure that counts for the triple lock,' explained Sarah Coles, head of personal finance at Hargreaves Lansdown. 'A rise of 4.0 to 4.5 per cent means the state pension would be between £12,451 and £12,512. This would bring it within touching distance of the personal allowance – so anyone with even a very modest personal pension income could end up paying income tax.' The standard Personal Allowance is £12,570, which is the amount of income you do not have to pay tax on, the government website notes. Beyond that figure – so receiving a full state pension would mean just an extra £59 – the basic tax rate would apply. That includes income from property, dividends, earnings or elsewhere. It's important to remember the tax would only be paid on the portion of income above the personal allowance threshold, not the entire amount. That also remains dependent on no changes to the tax threshold levels, the triple lock remaining in effect, and the Treasury backing the increase order during their March review. The numbers apply to the new state pension rather than the basic state pension, which is for those born before 1951 (men) or 1953 (women). 'The Bank of England expects inflation to ease in the coming months, so that by the time we get to the state pension rise in April next year, this increase might be well ahead of annual price rises at the time,' Ms Coles continued. 'Of course, this is only part of the picture. Inflation has been particularly focused on household bills and food prices, which pensioners on lower incomes spend a larger proportion of their income on. It means many of those who rely heavily on the state pension will be holding their breath for the rise in the spring.'

Millions of Vodafone and Three customers receive mega mobile speed upgrade at no extra cost

MILLIONS of Vodafone and Three customers have received a mega mobile speed upgrade - at no extra cost to them. In a recent update, Vodafone Three says it's boosted coverage by upgrading over 600 mast sites in the UK. Mega Mobile speed upgrade Mobile operator VodafoneThree (Vodafone and Three UK) is allowing 27 million customers to roam across both networks at no extra cost. Customers' devices will automatically connect to the best coverage available – whether that's on the Vodafone or Three network. The aim is to deliver improved coverage, reliability, and speed when using 4G and 5G. The rollout of this 'Multi-Operator Core Network' technology is being hailed as an early benefit of the two networks' recent merger and will be live in over 9,000 sites by the end of this year. However, some 7 million Three UK customers are already said to be experiencing an average 20% boost in 4G speeds. Rising to 40% in some key towns and cities, thanks to the integration of combined spectrum reports ISPreview. Andrea Donà, Chief Network Officer, VodafoneThree, said: 'Bringing our networks together marks a major milestone for VodafoneThree, unlocking greater capacity, reducing 4G not spots, and expanding 5G coverage. 'Just weeks into the rollout, millions of customers are already seeing the benefits of a nationwide boost. "Powered by our spectrum integration and Multi-Operator Core Network technology. 'It's a clear signal of VodafoneThree's ambition and ability to move at pace to deliver a new era of connectivity.' Brits will always have mobile phone & internet signal at home after tech breakthrough that beats Elon Musk's Starlink The biggest UK mobile network Back in June, Vodafone completed its £15billion mega-merger with rival Three UK and pledged to invest billions in infrastructure. The newly-created joint business VodafoneThree said the deal would create a 'new force in UK mobile'. It is now the biggest mobile phone network in the UK with around 27million customers. But the deal cuts the UK's four main network operators down to just three, with the new joint business competing with BT/EE and Virgin Media O2. The tie-up was first announced in 2023 but faced a probe by the competition watchdog, which was worried about the negative effect on consumers. The Competition and Markets Authority feared it could substantially reduce options for mobile customers and lead to higher bills. The CMA gave the thumbs up in December, as long as the two firms agreed to invest billions of pounds to roll out a combined 5G network across the UK. They were also told to offer shorter-term customer protections requiring the merged company to cap certain mobile tariffs for three years. Solving Mobile complaints quickly From last month, customers have been able to take advantage of a new "Just Ask Once" promise which aims to solve complaints quickly. As part of the service, users will be able to message with a customer service member through the Vodafone app. The move aims to speed up how customers' problems are handled and cut down the time users are placed on hold. Only Vodafone customers will be able to use the service. Customers will be able to message with the person handling their complaint directly and will receive regular message updates until the issue is resolved. Mobile and broadband users facing problems will also only have to deal with one staff member handling their complaint. The mobile and broadband giant said if the issue isn't resolved to the customers' satisfaction, they will be able to "simply part ways without penalty". However, it stressed this only applies to "genuine" issues that aren't resolved - not any problems that aren't solved to the customer's satisfaction. Typically, customers are charged an exit fee if they wish to end their contract early, even if they are unhappy with the service.
