Geens claims dominant triathlon win in Vancouver
The Belgian did not finish the opening race of the season in Singapore but bounced back with a second-placed finish in San Francisco a fortnight ago.
Geens then followed that up in style in Vancouver, leading from the front to seal a first victory of the season and move level on points with German pair Rico Bogen and Mika Noodt behind leader Marten Van Riel in the overall standings.
'It was a hard race,' said Geens. 'It's a bit like it was in my first T100 race in Lake Las Vegas [last year] and on the run I had to go for my life.
'I'm very pleased with the last two races after Singapore and getting two good scores on the board for the Race To Qatar.
'I need two more [scores] before the final and there are lots of opportunities but I'm aiming for the highest, which is two more wins.
'It's very open still, with lots of races to go, but this is a very good step for me.'
Geens formed a lead group on the bike alongside Van Riel, Bogen and Noodt and was able to stay in touch despite briefly dropping off the pace before showing his strength on the run to produce a storming leg and take the tape.
The Belgian eventually took the win by 50 seconds over compatriot Van Riel, having overtaken the overall leader halfway through the run.
He added: 'That was tough! I didn't have the best start in the swim. The pace wasn't too hard but there was a bit of a gap.
'On the bike, the big guys like Kyle [Smith], Marten and Mika went to the front first and it was hard for me and then I got properly dropped.
'I got lucky that Mika got a penalty and I was able to hang onto him and didn't lose too much ground.'
Van Riel did much of the heavy lifting on the bike leg after a tough swim but was pleased with his podium finish having finished a disappointing sixth in San Francisco two weeks ago.
'I'm very happy to be on the podium again,' he said. 'I was leading at the start of the bike, and it took a long time for someone to challenge me. I thought, damn, I must be strong in aero today!
'I think Rico and Jelle have really shown their cards in the last couple of races, and I think I'm just not quite there yet.
'To be this close to Jelle on the run, who's one of the best in the sport is actually good for my morale. My bike is really good at the moment so I'm confident I've got more in the tank for the Race To Qatar.'

Chelsea have been told to prepare to spend more than expected if they want to sign Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike, who is also being tracked by Manchester United Chelsea legend Florent Malouda has warned that the club could end up paying a hefty sum for Hugo Ekitike. Ekitike has also reportedly attracted interest from Manchester United. However, the Bundesliga outfit will not mind clubs being put off by Ekitike's price tag. Frankfurt achieved Champions League qualification after finishing third this season and are not in a rush to sell their prize asset. Eintracht Frankfurt's CEO Markus Krosche was clear regarding the potential sale of Ekitike. "If the price isn't right, then he'll just stay with us. We don't have to sell Hugo," he said. Having started off at Reims, Ekitike caught the eye and secured a move to PSG but struggled for game time. A loan to Frankfurt in February 2024 saw his fortunes change for the better. Chelsea's interest in Ekitike is not thought to harm Jackson's future at the club. The 23-year-old forward scored 13 goals across his second season at Stamford Bridge. On the other hand, Christopher Nkunku, once on the radar of United and Bayern Munich, is likely to leave this summer. Despite his future potentially being elsewhere, Chelsea have named the forward in their Club World Cup squad. Fans convinced F1 icon 'cursed' Lando Norris before Canadian Grand Prix crash
Lando Norris crashed out of the Canadian Grand Prix and lost valuable points in the Formula 1 title race with Oscar Piastri – but was he cursed? George Russell impressively won from pole in Montreal on Sunday ahead of Max Verstappen and Kimi Antonelli – the 18-year-old's first F1 podium. There was late drama at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve as Norris attempted to overtake McLaren teammate Piastri but misjudged a gap and ended up colliding with the Australian and a wall. The Brit was immediately out of the race but Piastri was able to continue and took the chequered flag in fourth-place, extending his championship lead over Norris to 22 points. Norris took full responsibility for the collision, saying he 'made a fool' of himself, but some fans believe an F1 champion may have actually jinxed the crash… 2016 world champion Nico Rosberg has garnered a reputation for seemingly inflicting bad luck on drivers and teams via the power of… selfies. On numerous occasions, the German has posted selfies with a driver's car ahead of a race or thrown his support behind a certain team, only for them to endure a miserable grand prix. 'So, happy nothing happened to him. I paid the price for my mistake. 'Our rule number one is to not make contact with your team-mate and it's what I did. McLaren is my family. I race for them, you know, every single weekend. 'I try and do well for them, more than I often try and do well for myself. So, when I let them down like this and when I make a fool of myself in a moment like today, yeah, I have a lot of regret. 'I've let down the team. So, that's going to stay with me for a little while. But at the same time, part of moving on is trying to put it behind you and crack on with the next weekend.' Rosberg, who has previously acknowledged the curse's existence, is fearful that the mistakes are building up for Norris, telling Sky Sports: 'Lando did an amazing first lunge into the hairpin, that was beautiful.
