Scottie Scheffler grasps control of 2025 British Open after stellar Saturday at Royal Portrush

USA Today6 days ago
PORTRUSH, Northern Ireland — Matt Fitzpatrick is annoyed with his putting coach Phil Kenyon. Not for something he did or didn't do to help Fitzpatrick's game but rather because Kenyon has shared his secrets with world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler.
'His putting is night and day,' said Fitzpatrick, who was paired in the final group on Saturday at the 153rd British Open with Scheffler. 'He's just not missed a putt today. There isn't one putt that he's missed, and that's obviously the difference that's taken him to this unbeatable run.'
Scheffler is the leading the field in Strokes Gained: Putting this week and whenever his putter heats up – and outshines his otherworldly ball striking – Scheffler is going to be tough to beat. On Saturday, he shot a bogey-free 4-under 67 at Royal Portrush Golf Club to improve to 14-under 199 – his lowest 54-hole total at a major – and assume a four-stroke lead over China's Haotong Li. Scheffler stayed patient, even when he endured an early 3-putt par, even when he failed to make a birdie in his first six holes and even when he needed to salvage pars at Nos. 11 and 14.
'I think anytime you can keep a clean card around a major championship, you're going to be having a pretty good day,' Scheffler said. 'Sometimes major championships it can be tough to make birdies, and today was one of those days where I just had to give myself some looks and was able to hole a few.'
The two-time Masters champion already added the PGA Championship to his trophy case in May and now he's 18 holes away from a Claret Jug and a third leg of the career Grand Slam. Asked how satisfying it would be to conquer links-style golf, he replied, 'it would be nice, but I'm not going to be thinking about that tonight.'
Scheffler will be bidding for his 17th Tour title and fourth career major and will attempt to become the seventh Open Championship winner to record four rounds in the 60s. He'll be paired in the final round with Haotong Li, who was a member of the International Team in the 2019 Presidents Cup but suffered the yips and hadn't played in a major in three years. He shot 2-under 69 on Saturday and is alone in second.
'I'm actually quite looking forward to it,' he said of playing alongside Scheffler on Sunday. 'Four shots behind, kind of like play for second, especially play with world No. 1. I just try to play my best out there and hopefully make something happen.'
Fitzpatrick, who is seeking to become the first Englishman since Nick Faldo 33 years ago to win the British Open, is in third after shooting even-par 71. He knows he faces an unenviable task on Sunday.
'Let's be realistic, he's five ahead. It's not easy. But if you get off to a good start, you get 3-under through 6, like some of the guys today, 7 the par-5, and all of a sudden you're kind of right back in it, you would hope,' he said. 'It's clear what I have to do tomorrow.'
Four golfers are tied at 8 under, including Chris Gotterup, who won last week's Scottish Open, Harris English, Tyrrell Hatton and Rory McIlroy. The world No. 2 has had his fair share of battles with Scheffler and was honest as ever in assessing the uphill battle he faces.
'He's playing like Scottie. I don't think it's a surprise. Everyone's seen the way he's played or plays over the last two or three years. He's just so solid. He doesn't make mistakes,' McIlroy said. 'He's turned himself into a really consistent putter as well. So there doesn't seem to be any weakness there. Whenever you're trying to chase down a guy like that, it's hard to do.'
But much like Fitzpatrick, McIlroy can envision a path to coming from behind and stealing the trophy from one of golf's top frontrunners. McIlroy has done it before, most notably at the 2023 FedEx Cup.
'I've got a chance,' McIlroy said. 'I need to get off to a great start like I did today, and if I can do that, anything can happen. I've come from a few shots behind before at big tournaments and was able to win. If I can get off to one of those hot starts again, maybe Scottie feels a little bit of that a couple of groups behind, and you never know. Scottie is the best player in the world right now. I think it's clear for everyone to see. He's just consistently so good each and every week he tees it up, so it's going to be a tall order to be able to catch him tomorrow. But I'm going to look forward to the challenge.'
Whomever comes out on top will have the honor of being known as the Champion Golfer of the Year.

Top-ranked golfer Scottie Scheffler would sacrifice one major championship to end Cowboys' Super Bowl drought

Scottie Scheffler has dominated on the golf course in recent years. This year alone, the world No. 1 golfer has won two major tournaments — the PGA Championship and The Open Championship. Scheffler is also a two-time Masters Tournament champion, but he admitted he would sacrifice at least one of his four coveted major titles in exchange for seeing his beloved Dallas Cowboys reach the mountaintop. "Gosh, I don't know. I would trade one, for sure, for a Super Bowl," the University of Texas alum responded when asked during a recent edition of the "Pardon My Take" podcast whether he would trade a major to see the Cowboys win it all. Those comments follow an admission Scheffler made before teeing off at The Open last week at Royal Portrus about the sport he dominates not completely fulfilling him before teeing off at The Open last week at Royal Portrus. While Scheffler is a New Jersey native, he has resided in Dallas for the majority of his life and is a self-proclaimed fan of the Cowboys. While the Waste Management Phoenix Open is not one of golf's four majors, Scheffler noted he would sacrifice several of his victories in that tournament in favor of seeing the Cowboys hoist the Vince Lombardi Trophy. "I've been rooting for a Super Bowl for a long time as well," the top-ranked golfer said before jokingly suggesting he's dealt with more disappointment when it comes to football than he has in golf. "A lot of hard work has gone into cheering on the Boys." The Cowboys have won five Super Bowl titles in the franchise's history. However, the upcoming 2025 season marks three decades since the team has won a championship. The Cowboys have also experienced limited postseason success over that span, and the have failed to advance to a conference championship game since the 1995 season. During Scheffler's lifetime, he's seen Dallas win just five playoff games. A hamstring injury derailed Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott's 2024 season. The team finished with a 7-10 record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. Mike McCarthy was not retained as the head coach.

Scottie Scheffler clears the air on British Open fart-gate

The Scottie Scheffler fart-gate took a brand new twist. On the 17th hole at the British Open last Thursday, when Scheffler was chipping to the green, the broadcast feed picked up someone passing gas. While some thought a fan was the culprit, Scheffler completely changed the narrative this week. Advertisement Scheffler was featured on Barstool Sports' 'Pardon My Take' podcast and shed light on who is really to blame for the incident — himself. 'Yeah, that was me,' Scheffler admitted on the show. 'Oh yeah, that was me. 'You're out there for like six hours, you're eating some different food over there. Some stuff is going to happen. I'm definitely surprised it hasn't happened more in the past picking up stuff like that. I literally didn't think anything about it then after we got inside, Xander [Schauffele] was showing me the video. He pulls up the video and I see myself standing on 17, and I'm like, 'Oh, I know what this is.'' Scheffler finished Thursday 3-under par and continued to ride high into the weekend before he ran away with the British Open crown, his first time winning that major. 4 Scottie Scheffler teeing off from the 16th hole at the British Open. 'It was a tough week; I battled hard all weekend. Today, once again, was a battle, but [I] played some really good golf. 2025 Big Bets Report: Clemson CFP Title Will Equal $20k For Bettor

We're into the last week of July. Before you know it, college football season will be here, starting with a limited slate of games on Aug. 23. But some bettors are looking well beyond that date, all the way to the Jan. 19 College Football Playoff Championship Game. That includes a DraftKings Sportsbook customer looking to turn a few bucks into a lot more on a three-leg parlay. Read on for more on that customer's wager and other notable bets as the calendar heads toward August. Forward Thinking Way back in April, a day before the Masters began, a bettor at DraftKings put a mere $14 on this three-leg futures parlay: Rory McIlroy +650 to win the Masters Florida Panthers +800 to win the Stanley Cup Clemson +2000 to win the College Football Playoff Add those three up, and you've got odds of +141650, or in easier-to-digest terms, about 1417/1. The first two legs have long since delivered. McIlroy beat Justin Rose in a playoff to win the Masters, and for the second straight year, Florida topped Edmonton to win the Stanley Cup. So it's up to Clemson to finish it off. If the Tigers win it all, then that 14 bucks turns into $19,845. It's not far-fetched, either. Clemson has been a sharp offseason play in College Football Playoff odds, so much so that DraftKings has cut the Tigers' odds in half. Clemson is now the +1000 fifth choice to win the national title, behind only Ohio State (+500), Texas (+550), Georgia (+700) and Penn State (+750). Baseball Bingo Most of us don't know what it's like to cash a 12-leg parlay. Not only because most of us don't make 12-leg parlay bets, but more so because those bets rarely hit. But when they do, the payout is pretty good. A William Hill US customer in Nevada found that out on Sunday. The bettor mixed in some moneyline, runline and Over/Under plays on Sunday's MLB slate, wagering all of $5, at monster odds of +252029 — just beyond 2520/1. Adding to the difficulty: six legs were on in-game odds. All 12 legs got to the finish line, turning that bettor's five bucks into a healthy $12,601.49. On Wednesday, another lottery-ticket-style win surfaced, at Caesars Sports. A Nevada customer crafted a nine-leg parlay on MLB player props. The wager was $10. Add up all those odds, and it totals out to about +114001, or 1140/1. Somehow, every leg got there and the bettor ended up with $11,408.22. Punting on Pittsburgh Back to football, NFL odds are starting to percolate, too. The preseason kicks off Thursday with the Hall of Fame Game, pitting the Indianapolis Colts against the Baltimore Ravens. The regular season is just six weeks away. One of the more intriguing bets so far comes from a bettor who's hoping Russell Wilson and the Pittsburgh Steelers have a complete disaster of a season. Caesars Sports took a $13.33 wager on the Steelers to go 0-17, at odds of +20000 (200/1). Keep in mind, the Steelers have never even had a losing record in 18 years under coach Mike Tomlin. But if somehow Pittsburgh runs totally off the rails this season, then that small wager turns into $2,679.33. I Like Big Bets and I Cannot Lie When it comes to NFL futures betting, it's usually Super Bowl odds that attract the biggest wagers. AFC and NFC championship odds often see some high-dollar plays, as well. But one of the biggest bets of the offseason is actually on division odds, specifically on the Buffalo Bills to win the AFC East. A Caesars Sports customer plopped down a massive $250,000 on the Bills -250. If Josh Allen & Co. win their sixth straight AFC East title, then the bettor will profit $100,000 (total payout $350,000). In Super Bowl odds, Caesars took a $60,000 bet on the Kansas City Chiefs +900. If K.C. gets back on track and wins its third title in four seasons, then the bettor collects $540,000 in profit (total payout $600,000). Caesars took a comparatively much more modest bet on the New York Jets to win the AFC title. An optimistic customer put $5,000 on the Jets +7500 to lift the Lamar Hunt Trophy. In the unlikely event that the Jets earn a trip to the Super Bowl, the bettor will profit a hefty $375,000. All I can say is good luck. It'd be a phenomenal story to write about.
