The birthplace of Avoca, the Avoca Village store is home to a weaving mill, a retail store and Avoca cafe, with visitors able to enjoy guided mill tours, learn about its rich history and heritage, and see skilled weavers at work.

Wicklow Gaol offers visitors a journey through the original prison building, while telling the stories of the men, women and children imprisoned there under British rule over two centuries of turbulent history, while the Arklow Heritage Museum features a massive collection of artefacts from the Biking towns's rich history.
For something truly unique, check out the Coolakay Agricultural Museum, which features farming implements and machinery that highlight the evolution of farming from the early 1700s to the present day.

2025 Baseball Hall of Fame induction: CC Sabathia, Ichiro Suzuki, Billy Wagner show humor, grace entering Cooperstown
The National Baseball Hall of Fame added five members with the 2025 class inducted in the 53rd annual ceremony at the Clark Sports Center in Cooperstown, New York, on Sunday. Ichiro Suzuki, CC Sabathia and Billy Wagner were welcomed into baseball immortality. They were joined Dick Allen and Dave Parker, who were voted in by the Classic Baseball Era committee. But he led off Sunday's festivities with his speech. "What a humbling moment standing in front of my heroes on the ultimate stage," Wagner said to begin his speech. Setting a fun tone for the day, Wagner thanked several of his teammates including Moises Alou for teaching him to appreciate Dominican culture "even though I can't speak a lick of Spanish" and Jeff Bagwell for the "glare" that often set the tone in the Houston Astros' clubhouse. Dave Parker's son, David Parker II, spoke on behalf of his late father, who died just a month before the Hall of Fame induction ceremony. He read a poem that his father wanted to read for this moment. Reading from the speech his father wrote, he thanks the players who called his father "Pops," including former Reds teammates Eric Davis and Barry Larkin. He thanked Dave Winfield for asking him to play for the Blue Jays and pursue another World Series. And he expressed admiration to Tony La Russa, who said he didn't just want Parker's numbers, he wanted him to provided leadership for the team's younger players how to play baseball. David Parker recalled seeing how famous his father was when they went out in public and were approached by so many fans. Dave Parker clarified for his son, "They ain't fans, son. They're friends.' The other player elected by the Classic Baseball Era committee also unfortunately earned the honor posthumously. Dick Allen was represented by his wife, Willa. She became emotional while recalling how much her husband wanted to speak to the Phillies fans when the team retired his No. 15 in 2020, despite being sick with cancer. He had difficulties with the fans early in his career, but came to love them. "Thank you for finally bringing him home," Willa Allen said to baseball fans and those who elected him to Cooperstown. CC Sabathia began his acceptance speech by thanking his fellow Hall of Famers including former Yankees teammate Derek Jeter, who graciously praised the pitcher in a video shown beforehand. He also thanked fellow inductee Ichiro Suzuki, "who stole my Rookie of the Year trophy" in 2001. Sabathia also expressed gratitude for becoming a Hall of Famer in the same class as Parker, who was the DH on the 1989 Oakland Athletics team he loved while growing up as a baseball fan. He also referenced Ken Griffey Jr., who was his mother's favorite player and shared the stage with him in Cooperstown on Sunday. He also expressed regret for not being able to win a World Series for the fans in Cleveland. Finally, Ichiro Suzuki practically put on a stand-up comedy routine with his speech. Notably, he made the speech in English after conducting most interviews during his career, and interviews leading up to the Hall of Fame ceremony, in his native Japanese. "For the third time, I am a rookie," he said, referencing joining the Orix Blue Wave and Seattle Mariners as a first-timer before entering the Baseball Hall of Fame. 'I am 51 years old, so easy on the hazing," he said, turning to the 52 Hall of Famers on stage behind him. Suzuki also made a point to mention the one Baseball Writers Association of America voter who did not give him a first-place vote, preventing him from being the second-ever unanimous selection. "The offer for that writer to have dinner at my home has now expired," he said for the day's biggest laugh. Suzuki also thanked former Marlins president David Samson and president of baseball operations Mike Hill for signing him to play three seasons in Miami from 2015-17. "When you guys called to offer me a contract in 2015," he jokingly admitted, "honestly… I had never heard of your team." The frequent humor provided the perfect note for a day made longer by a one-hour rain delay and hot temperatures in Cooperstown that compelled Parker II to take off his jacket during his speech and Sabathia to frequently wipe his bald head with a towel. Magomedov's opponent, 35-year-old Barriault (17-10) from Quebec, Canada, wanted to build on his recent win against Bruno Silva at UFC 315 in May 2025. From the start, Barriault pursued aggressively, but Magomedov evaded heavy strikes while causing damage by landing low kicks to his opponent's leading leg. When Barriault landed a takedown, Magomedov lost no time getting back on his feet and dealt punishing elbows to escape the clinch against the fence. The Canadian incurred more damage in his next takedown attempt when Magomedov fired back with a hard knee, followed by a stinging question mark kick before the end of Round 1. The fight escalated in Round 2 when Magomedov continued his fast-footed defense before hurting Barriault with another elbow in the clinch that opened a head wound. Following up with a body kick, Magomedov took control of the fight until Barriault suddenly broke through with a hard jab to the nose that rocked the Russian. Showing his grit under pressure, Magomedov survived the following rush of strikes from Barriault and shifted the scales back in his favor during the final moments of the second round. In yet another clinch, Magomedov wobbled his opponent by connecting elbows to the head and knees to the body, leaving Barriault scrambling to evade a knockout before the buzzer. The final round unfolded with both fighters pursuing a finish with no holds barred. Tom Lehrer, musical satirist and math prodigy, dead at 97
(Reuters) -Tom Lehrer, the math prodigy who became an influential musical satirist with his barbed views of American social and political life in the 1950s and 1960s, has died at the age of 97, according to news reports. Lehrer died at his home in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on Saturday, his longtime friend David Herder told the New York Times. No cause of death was specified. Lehrer's career as a musician and revered social commentator was little more than a happy accident that began with composing ditties to amuse classmates at Harvard University. His heyday lasted about seven years and, by his own count, produced only 37 songs before the reluctant performer returned to teaching at Harvard and other universities. "There's never been anyone like him," Sir Cameron Mackintosh, the Broadway producer who created "Tom Foolery," a revue of Lehrer songs, told BuzzFeed in 2014. "Of all famous songwriters, he's probably the only one that ... is an amateur in that he never wanted to be professional. And yet the work he did is of the highest quality of any great songwriter." As the U.S. nestled into the post-war complacency of the 1950s, the liberal-leaning Lehrer was poking holes in the culture with his songs while maintaining an urbane, witty air. Some of his works reflected his mathematical interests - "New Math" about subtracting 173 from 342 and "Lobachevsky" about a 19th-century Russian mathematician - but his meatier songs were deemed by some to be too irreverent and shocking. In 1959 Time magazine lumped him in with groundbreaking comics Lenny Bruce and Mort Sahl as "sicknicks" who had "a personal and highly disturbing hostility toward all the world." The song "I Wanna Go Back to Dixie" looked at racism in the South ("The land of the boll weevil where the laws are medieval") while "National Brotherhood Week" took on hypocrites ("It's only for a week so have no fear / Be nice to people who are inferior to you"). "Be Prepared" exposed the dark side of a Boy Scout's life, "I Got It from Agnes" was about venereal disease, and "We Will All Go Together When We Go" addressed nuclear Armageddon. "If, after hearing my songs, just one human being is inspired to say something nasty to a friend, or perhaps to strike a loved one, it will all have been worth the while," Lehrer wrote on the notes that accompanied one of his albums. ODE TO ELEMENTS Thomas Andrew Lehrer was born on April 9, 1928, in New York. He grew up in the Big Apple listening to musical theater and one of his first works was "The Elements," a recitation of the periodic table set to a Gilbert and Sullivan tune. He enrolled at Harvard at age 15 and his "Fight Fiercely, Harvard" with the line "Won't it be peachy if we win the game?" became a popular spoof of the school's sports fight song. He performed at campus functions and, while in graduate school, compiled enough material to record an album in a Boston studio. He sold "Songs by Tom Lehrer" around campus and it developed a word-of-mouth cult following around the country. After serving in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1957, Lehrer began performing and recorded more albums but was losing his zest for music. By the early 1960s, working on his doctorate - which he never finished - and teaching became greater concerns, although he did contribute songs to the TV news satire show "That Was the Week That Was" in 1963 and 1964. Lehrer taught math at Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and musical theater at the University of California-Santa Cruz. He said he found math and songwriting to be similar - both a matter of fitting the pieces together in search of a proper and satisfying outcome. When asked why he abandoned musical satire, he said cultural changes had created issues such as abortion and feminism that were too complicated to satirize. Famously, he quipped that "political satire became obsolete when Henry Kissinger was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize" after the award was given to the controversial secretary of state in 1973. Lehrer, who never married, also said the things he once found to be funny were now scary. "I often feel like a resident of Pompeii who has been asked for some humorous comments on lava," he told People magazine in 1982. Lehrer's impact lasted decades after he stopped performing. His work was often featured on the syndicated Dr. Demento radio show and "Harry Potter" star Daniel Radcliffe dazzled a talk show audience by doing "The Elements" on a television show in 2010.
