The ending of '28 Years Later' explained and how it sets up the sequel, 'The Bone Temple'

Fans waited nearly 20 years for " 28 Years Later" — and its cliffhanger ending will likely leave them with more questions than answers.
The film is set three decades on from when the Rage Virus escaped from a lab in Britain, causing the infected to become mindless and bloodthirsty zombie-like killers.
It is essentially a coming of age story about a 12-year-old named Spike, who lives on an island that is cut off from the mainland during high tide, which protects his community from the infected.
The opening scene of "28 Years Later" shows the infected attacking a young boy named Jimmy at the start of the outbreak. It then jumps forward to Spike's father, Jamie (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), taking him hunting on the mainland as a rite of passage.
They leave behind Spike's mother, Isla (Jodie Comer), who is bed-bound by a mystery illness that causes amnesia.
Here's the ending explained, and how it sets up the sequel "28 Years Later: The Bone Temple."
"28 Years Later" follows Spike as he tries to save his mother.
After Spike spots a fire in the distance while on the mainland, Jamie tells him of a man called Doctor Kelson (Ralph Fiennes), whom he saw nonchalantly burning hundreds of bodies when he was younger. He warns Spike of how dangerous even the uninfected can be.
However, Spike ignores him and decides to sneak Isla onto the mainland in the hopes the doctor can cure her. He creates a distraction by burning a general store and leaving during low tide.
On the mainland, Spike and Isla meet Eric (Edvin Ryding), a Swedish NATO soldier whose squad washed up in England after their boat sank. He saves them from a number of infected, but threatens to kill them when Isla helps a pregnant infected woman give birth to an uninfected baby. However, he's stopped by a variant of the infected called an Alpha, who rips Eric's head and spine off his body.
As they escape, Kelson suddenly appears and drugs the Alpha (Chi Lewis-Parry) with a blowdart, and provides Spike, Isla, and the baby with sanctuary in an area where he has built huge towers out of bones and skulls. He calls it the "Memento Mori," Latin for "Remember you die."
In one of the film's quieter moments, he diagnoses Isla with cancer, which has spread to her brain. This explains her memory loss and extreme headaches. She chooses to let Kelson euthanize her and she tells Spike that she'll always be with him.
She walks off into the darkness with Kelson, and he returns with her skull. In a heartbreaking moment, he lets Spike pick a spot in the Memento Mori to place it, and he climbs to the top of the tower, positioning her skull so that she's forever looking out onto the world.
After Isla's death, Spike embraces life on the mainland.
The next morning, Spike treks back to the island and leaves the baby outside the gate with a note explaining that she isn't infected, and that he's named her Isla. In a moment of rage and grief, Jamie races out to the sea at high tide to try to find Spike, but he has already disappeared.
Spike's decision to leave the safety of the isolated island to explore the mainland alone appears to symbolize that he's left his childhood behind.
But a group of infected soon find him while he's cooking fish, and he flees his camping spot. In the film's most surprising moment, he's saved by a man in a bright purple tracksuit and gold jewelry who calls himself Jimmy (Jack O'Connell).
Most importantly, he's the boy who survived the film's savage opening. Jimmy is joined by several other young people with long blond hair and matching, colorful tracksuits who kill the infected with large spears.
Their appearance is a stark contrast to Spike and the other island survivors, who are haggard.
The group's look is reminiscent of Jimmy Savile. The once hugely popular British television presenter who after his death in 2011 was revealed to be a prolific sexual abuser of children and adults. It's possible that in the universe of the horror franchise, Savile's crimes were never uncovered.
Jimmy asks Spike if he'd like to go with him, and the film ends there.
The scene sets the stage for the sequel, "28 Years Later: The Bone Temple," which arrives in theaters on January 16, 2026.

Nia DaCosta Reveals Her One Amendment to Alex Garland's '28 Years Later: The Bone Temple' Script — 'More Infected'

Nia DaCosta has teased what to expect from her instalment of Danny Boyle's 28 Days Later sequel, 28 Years Later. DaCosta took on directing duties for The Bone Temple, filmed back to back with Boyle's movie released earlier this year that featured Alfie Williams, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer and Ralph Fiennes. More from The Hollywood Reporter Gary Oldman on Almost Playing Edward Scissorhands, Bonding With Bowie and His "Diabolical Good Luck" Helen Mirren Says "I'm Such a Feminist, but You Can't Have a Woman" Playing James Bond: "It Just Doesn't Work" Netflix Unveils First Look at Louis Partridge, James Norton, Emily Fairn and Anthony Boyle in 'House of Guinness,' Sets September Launch Date At an Edinburgh International Film Festival event on Monday, DaCosta said fans of the zombie apocalypse franchise will be seeing more of Spike's story and Jack O'Connell's character in her movie, set for a January 2026 release. 'Making the 28 Years Later sequel was one of the best filmmaking experiences I've had,' DaCosta, director of The Marvels (2023) and Candyman (2021), said. 'One of the issues I had with Candyman and Marvels was the lack of a really solid script, which is always gonna just wreak havoc on the whole process. But Alex Garland hands you a script, and you're like, 'This is amazing.' You don't really have to change it, although I did, I basically asked for more infected. [Laughs.] That was, like, my big contribution.' 'I inherited an amazing cast, then I was given the leeway to cast the rest of the film,' she continued. 'There were a couple of locations I inherited. I was given the leeway to develop all the other locations. Some of it overlapped, like the character Samson — Danny and I would collaborate a bit on the look, but at the end of the day, Danny shoots so different from the way I shoot.' The filmmaker — whose MCU instalment is the highest-grossing film of all-time directed by a Black woman — was in Edinburgh to discuss her varied career from Top Boy to the upcoming Tessa Thompson-starring Hedda, which is world premiering at the Toronto Film Fest next month. She also went into a little detail about landing the job on one of cinema's biggest horror franchises. '28 Days Later was one of my seminal films growing up… I had the DVD in my house. I watched it all the time. Obviously, fell in love with Cillian Murphy. And Danny Boyle is a bonkers fucking filmmaker. No one else can make a Danny Boyle film, and that was actually the biggest part of my pitch for the movie. I was like, 'No one else can do that and I don't have any intention of doing that. Here's how I see the film, what do you think?'' It turns out it was none other than The Zone of Interest helmer Jonathan Glazer who convinced her to take on The Bone Temple. 'The time was so terrible because I was finishing Hedda and it overlapped slightly, and I was like, 'I can't do it.' I was at a dinner with Jonathan Glazer and I was like, 'He'll tell me not do it.' I was like, 'Jonathan, this script's come around and I don't know, do you think I should do it?'' 'It's 28 Years Later and I [thought], the man who made Birth and all his unique, personal films is not going to tell me to do a franchise film. He goes, 'Do you like the script?' [I said], 'Damn it, I love it.'' The New York-born creative spoke candidly while reflecting on her colorful career so far, from studying at Tisch School of the Arts in New York to her breakout movie Little Woods (2018). She spoke in Edinburgh the day of a retrospective screening for DaCosta's selected film: Doug Liman's 1999 comedy crime drama Go. Edinburgh International Film Festival 2025 runs Aug. 14-20. Pamela Anderson's Full Dating History: Ex Boyfriends and Husbands

As you're likely well aware, Pamela Anderson and Liam Neeson are newly dating and it's completely adorable. Especially since Pamela has been through a lot when it comes to relationships. For those of you who haven't a) read her memoir, b) watched her Netflix doc, or c) binge-watched Pam & Tommy, here's a look at Pamela's complete (verified—no rumors here) dating history. Pamela and Scott dated for about three years in the early 90s, and even almost got engaged. Mostly, Scott got caught up in a romantic moment. As he put it in 2007, "Don't ever take a shower with a woman, because you'll probably end up proposing to her. There was a lot of soap, and I was making a speech, but my entire being was going, 'What are you doing? Shut up!' But I didn't stop." Pamela and the Poison frontman dated for a minute, and allegedly split due to Bret's, shall we say, disinterest in monogamy. Professional surfer Kelly Slater met Pamela on set of Baywatch and they fell hard. She gushed about him in her Netflix doc, saying "He was such a sweetheart to me and so good to me. Kelly and I dated all the time. Between lots of boyfriends and lots of girlfriends for him, too, but it wasn't just me. He definitely was a heartbreaker. He was a free spirit." Tommy Lee and Pamela Anderson met at a club on New Year's Eve. Here's what Tommy had to say about the moment in his memoir, Tommyland, "I went out with some of my best bros to a club…Suddenly, a waitress came over and said, 'Tommy, here's a shot of Goldschläger. It's for you, from Pamela Anderson.' I pushed my way into [her] booth, slid over her girlfriends' laps and forced myself a space right next to her. Then I grabbed her face and just licked the side of it, from chin to temple." Wow. A move. Anyway, these two started dating in February, Tommy Lee followed Pamela to Cancun for a photoshoot, and he popped the question three days into the trip. The next day, they got married. Though technically Pamela was still dating Kelly. "I was dating Kelly Slater at the time, and I was supposed to go see him in Florida and meet his family," she said in her Netflix doc. "My first phone call was to him to tell him I was married. He's like, 'What?!' That was horrible.'" Pam and Tommy went on honeymoon that summer and filmed an intimate video that ended up being stolen, sold, and published without their permission. Amid the aftershocks of that trauma, Pamela welcomed the couple's first son, Brandon, and then their second son, Dylan, in 1997. The couple divorced in 1998 after Tommy was arrested and charged with spousal abuse, but they got back together a few times over the years. Pam and Swedish model Marcus Schenkenberg dated for under a year after meeting due to a bird from a toilet in Monaco? You know what, sure. Pamela and Kid Rock (aka Bob Ritchie) married in 2006 after dating for five years, and broke up just a few months later—after a screening of Borat. Per Pamela's memoir, "Lots of important industry people were there—Steven Spielberg, Rick Rubin, Laird Hamilton and his wife, Gabby Reece. I didn't tell Bob I was in the movie, because I wanted to surprise him. I forgot about the part in the film that referenced the 'sex tape.' Bob stormed out, calling me a whore and worse." She added, "We broke up. I didn't stay in touch with Bob." Pamela and Rick married in October 2007, split ten weeks later, got back together, and ended up having their marriage annulled in March 2008. Your favorite circa 2025 celebrity rollercoaster relationship could never. Pamela and Rick got back together, married in January 2014, and then broke up again that summer (their divorce went through in 2015). "We were only married a few months, it was annulled, but we were still friends," Pam said in her Netflix doc, per the Post. "When he got sober, and was sober for years, we decided to try it again. ... It didn't last long either." Pamela was spotted visiting Julian at the Ecuadorian Embassy in London (where he was seeking asylum) back in 2017, and wrote about their burgeoning relationship in her blog. As she put it, "My relationship with Julian—it's no secret. He is one of my favorite people." She also called him "sexy." Pamela dated French soccer player Adil Rami for a couple years—and apparently Adil even proposed to Pamela. They broke up after she claimed he was cheating on her (which he denied). Pam and Jon got "married" (it was never official), but said "marriage" only lasted 12 days before they split. The pair remained friends, and Pamela told Variety in 2023 "He's great and has been a huge influence on my life. I love him to death." Meanwhile Peters added 'I will always love Pamela, always in my heart. As a matter of fact, I left her $10 million in my will. And she doesn't even know that. Nobody knows that. I'm just saying it for the first time with you. I probably shouldn't be saying it. So that's for her, whether she needs it or not." Pamela fell for her builder, Dan Hayhurst, while he was renovating her house. But it was super short lived, and Pamela told The Sunday Times that it "was stupid," adding that the marriage "was worse than any of them. And I realized, 'Oh my God, I'm caught up in this whole thing, what am I doing?' It just struck me, this is another disaster. ... I was paying for everything, cooking, cleaning for everybody. And so I just got out of it as soon as I could." Pam and Liam met on the set of their film The Naked Gun, and started dating during the press tour. The vibes are adorable, so please enjoy a full deep dive this way:
