Ghostbuster Paro clears path to legacy-defining rematch
A validated Liam Paro is eyeing bigger targets, claiming he won't "chase ghosts" and fight George Kambosos Jnr.
The Australian is instead intent on a rematch with their conqueror Richardson Hitchins, ideally for multiple belts, as he prepares to fight on home soil for the first time in nearly three years.
The Mackay product (25-1) will headline Wednesday's boxing card in Cairns against the dangerous Jonathan Navarro (18-1).

Caboolture's two-time world title challenger Liam Wilson (15-3) will also feature against Argentinian super featherweight Ayrton Gimenez (22-1) as he eyes a rematch with Emanuel Navarrete after his controversial Arizona loss two years ago.
Paro upset Subriel Matias in Puerto Rico to win the IBF's super lightweight title last June and, when a homecoming bout with Kambosos Jnr didn't eventuate, was forced to return there and defend his belt against Hitchins in December.
The Brooklyn star won a split decision contest and then, as forecast by Paro, obliterated Kambosos Jnr in New York City in his first defence earlier this month.
"I copped heat for saying George would lose, but I stand by it," Paro said.
"I just never thought Kambosos was world class. That's not unpatriotic, it's just my opinion as someone who knows what that level really looks like.
"There are levels to this game and I've shared the ring with the elite and I call it how I see it."
Kambosos is 2-4 since upsetting Teofimo Lopez in 2021 but has retained a top-four IBF ranking alongside Paro, who is also well positioned for shots at the WBC and WBO belts.
"I doubt it happens," Paro said of fighting his countryman.
"I think ego gets in the way. He's made it clear he won't fight another Aussie, which says a lot.
"But if we're both seen as one and two in the country, there's only one way to settle it.
"If it ever makes sense, I'm all in. I'll fight anyone, anywhere but I won't chase ghosts."
Lopez currently owns the WBO strap and is on Paro's hit list that includes Ryan Garcia, Rolando Romero and Isaac 'Pitbull' Cruz.
"People underestimate what Liam brings to the table,' No Limit boss George Rose said.
"He's tough, smart, and marketable as hell.
"He's doing it without shortcuts, without ducking anyone, and that's why the biggest names are going to have to deal with him eventually.
"This is the beginning of something huge."
Paro's last win in Australia was a devastating first-round stoppage of Brock Jarvis that launched him towards his first title shot while signed to Eddie Hearn's Matchroom Boxing.
"I had to defend my world title overseas under my last promoter when I should've been celebrating it in Australia," Paro said.
"So this one's for my Aussie fans and Queenslanders. And next time I want to be back here again, but with a world title on the line.
"I'm not here for easy fights or padded comebacks. You look at what Tim Tszyu's doing ... he's back in a mega-fight and rematch with (Sebastian) Fundora.
"That's the blueprint and that's what I'm chasing too.
"I'm not asking for a (Hitchins) rematch just to tick a box.
"I want a belt in my hands before we run it back. And when we do, I want it to be a unification. That's the goal. That's how legacies are built."

In case you're not aware, here's the entire card set to be streamed on DAZN on June 28 beginning at 8 p.m. ET. Here are the details. Jake Paul vs. Julio César Chávez Jr. Full Fight Card The event is a pay-per-view that costs $59.99 on DAZN. I won't spend a bunch of time talking about Paul-Chavez Jr. If you need someone to explain to you why it's worth watching, you've probably already decided you're not interested. So, it would probably be a waste of text. Basically, it's a fight between one of the most popular human beings on Earth and a polarizing second-generation fighter who is a former world champion. But he's also known as much for being a disappointment in the ring as he is for reaching the pinnacle of the sport. With Paul moving closer to fighting an actual active boxer, there's a slight bit more of a competitive interest in this one than in most of his previous bouts. Schofield is a talented and undefeated 22-year-old lightweight from New Jersey. He and his father, Floyd Sr., have become one of the more outspoken father-son combinations in the sport. Schofield was supposed to fight Shakur Stevenson for the WBC title earlier this year, but he fell ill and pulled out during fight week. Farmer is a highly skilled veteran and former super featherweight champion. However, he is on a three-fight losing streak following back-to-back controversial losses to William Zepeda (Stevenson's next opponent) and a more clear-cut loss to Ray Muratalla via unanimous decision in July 2024. Farmer will be the biggest test of Schofield's career, but not quite on the level of Stevenson. We'll see if he can use this fight as a stepping stone to that kind of opportunity. (Photo by) Ramirez-Dorticos is such an underrated fight. After all, Ramirez is one of the most underrated fighters of this generation. The reigning WBO cruiserweight champion is 47-1 with 30 KOs. His only loss came to Dmitry Bivol in November 2022. Ramirez is coming off a lopsided win over Chris Billam-Smith in November 2024, and he's looking to add the WBA title to his mantle. Dorticos is a dangerous, power-punching Cuban with 27 wins, 1 loss, and 25 of his victories have come by KO. It should be an interesting clash, and the card is providing Ramirez an opportunity to be appreciated by a larger viewing audience. That's the co-main event, but right before Ramirez and Dorticos clash, we'll see former UFC women's bantamweight champion and world champion boxer Holly Holm return to the ring. It's been 12 years since Holm boxed, as she went to the UFC where she pulled off arguably the biggest upset win in MMA history when she knocked out Ronda Rousey in November 2015. At 30, she is 13 years younger than the 43-year-old Holm and represents the right kind of challenge for the combat sports icon at this stage of her career. If Holm wins, don't rule out a potential championship fight against WBA champion Stephanie Han, who MVP just signed to a promotional deal. As you can see, there are a lot of layers here and multiple reasons to watch this event. The $60 price tag might still be a little steep, though.

‘On track': Positive pics for Kerr return
Sam Kerr won't be playing for the Matildas over the next two weeks but has linked up with her teammates in Perth as an injury lay-off that has hit 18 months edges closer to an end. Kerr dropped social media pics of her running during a trip to Mallorca in Spain and followed that up with another pic at the Sam Kerr Football Centre in Perth where her national teammates are preparing for games against Slovenia and Panama. The 31-year-old hasn't played since injuring her ACL in a training camp with club side Chelsea in January 2024. New Matildas coach Joe Montemurro recently revealed that the Matildas captain needed a second round of surgery, which stretched her recovery way beyond the normal period. But while she is doing most of her rehabilitation with Chelsea, Kerr has been allowed to link up with the Matildas who will play their first game under the new coach on Thursday night. She's set to take part in some individual sessions and do some training with her teammates as part of a plan being co-ordinated in collaboration with Chelsea. When Kerr wasn't named in Montemurro's 33-player squad for the four games in Western Australia, the new coach said he'd been talking to his skipper and things were moving in a 'positive way'. 'We're monitoring that on a day-to-day, week-to-week scenario. She's on track and we're working closely with Chelsea to make sure she's ready for the season going in from there,' he said. 'Everything's pointing in a positive way and going in the direction we feel that's right.' Recently married Matildas star Ellie Carpenter said it was exciting times for the team with a new coach leading into next year's Asian Cup, which is being held in Australia. 'You could tell by today's first session that everyone's fresh, everyone's excited,' she said in Perth. 'Everyone wants to put their best foot forward. That creates a challenging environment, very competitive environment and I think that's what we need.' 'I think Joe's very experienced internationally, he's coached at some big clubs, he knows what it takes to be the best footballers, to train them, to also beat top teams. 'And I think bringing his style here to the national team, keeping the ball, playing possession-based football is really going to bring the best out of our team, and it's what we need leading into the Asian Cup.' Mark Taylor calls for Marnus Labuschagne to make 15,000km move after Test axing
Aussie cricket great Mark Taylor hopes the axing of Marnus Labuschagne signals a more ruthless approach from selectors and believes the veteran batter should make the 15,000km trip back home from the Caribbean. Labuschagne paid the price for an alarming form slump over the last two years, with the 30-year-old dropped for this week's first Test against the West Indies, in Barbados. Teenage opener Sam Konstas returns to the starting XI after starring in the India series victory and will likely take Labuschagne's spot at opener. While Josh Inglis has also earned a Test recall at the expense of Steve Smith, who dislocated his finger in the WTC final loss to South Africa at Lord's. Labuchagne has remained with the squad in the Caribbean but Taylor believes it would be better for him to return home to Australia to have a 'refresh' and focus on returning for the Ashes series at the end of the year. "Come back, have a bit of time off from the game, just refresh. That wouldn't be a bad thing. Get ready for the Australian summer," the former Australia captain told Wide World of Sports. Taylor hopes Labuchagne's axing signals a 'tougher' approach from the Aussie selectors, who've had a long history of persisting with out-of-form veterans. The writing had been on the wall for Labuschagne for some time, with his last Test century coming in the 2023 Ashes series in England. Having previously been the world's No.1-ranked Test batter, Labuschagne has only averaged 27.82 in the past 12 months. And after struggling with the bat in Test series against India and Sri Lanka this year, as well as the WTC final, his average in 2025 has plummeted to just 16.16, leaving selectors with little option but to axe him. Green looked troubled after returning scores of just 4 and 0 in his two innings at Lord's and would probably prefer to return to his favoured No.4 role in Smith's absence. While Inglis returns after his memorable century on debut in Sri Lanka this year. And the 30-year-old is happy to bat wherever suits, having performed in various roles for Western Australia and Australia's white-ball sides. "I think it's just because I have done it, I feel comfortable going into different positions," Inglis told reporters at Bridgetown's Kensington Oval. "I've batted at the top in white-ball cricket and in the middle, so I've become accustomed to moving around a fair bit and something I pride myself on. "I took a lot of confidence from (from Sri Lanka); my debut Test match, it was nice to go out there and get a hundred." Australia convincingly won both matches of the two-Test tour of the West Indies the last time they were there in 2015 and will be hoping to kick off the new WTC cycle in similar fashion.
