Coach Willard reacts to Derik Queen's first-ever game-winner
Maryland head coach Kevin Willard was shocked to find out this was the first game-winner of Derik Queen's career

Maryland has hired Jim Smith as its next athletic director, the university announced Thursday, offering some stability to an athletic department that weathered several high-profile departures this spring.
Smith joins the Terrapins from Major League Baseball, where he has been the Atlanta Braves' senior vice president for business strategy since 2020.
Previously, he held several different executive roles with the Atlanta Falcons, including as chief marketing officer and revenue office vice president, and was the general manager and vice president of the Columbus Crew of Major League Soccer from 2000-04.

He has college experience as well, having served as the associate athletic director for marketing and communications at Ohio State.
Maryland leadership prioritized candidates with experience in revenue generation, according to ESPN.
'As college athletics rapidly evolves, Jim brings valuable administrative and business experience, plus the energy, vision and passion to lead our athletics program to new levels of success and impact,' Maryland president Darryll Pines said in a statement.
Smith replaces Damon Evans, who left the Terrapins in March to become the new athletic director at SMU.
Evans' departure came at a busy and awkward time for Maryland. The school's men's basketball team advanced to the Sweet 16 for the first time in nine years, but it did so as its coach, Kevin Willard, publicly lamented the university's financial commitment to its men's basketball program while he was being linked to the opening at Villanova, a job he ultimately accepted shortly after the Terrapins lost to eventual national champion Florida in the regional semifinals.
With Colleen Sorem serving as Maryland's interim athletic director, the university hired Buzz Williams to replace Willard.
'It is a great honor to be chosen to lead the athletics department at the University of Maryland and to guide UMD's storied programs into the next era,' Smith said in a statement. 'I am highly motivated to build upon excellence and lead Maryland forward in a dynamic and pivotal time for intercollegiate athletics, with a sharp focus on student-athlete health, well-being and academic success.'

Wex eyes HSA benefit from budget amid pressure
This story was originally published on Payments Dive. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Payments Dive newsletter. Business-to-business payments software provider Wex may benefit if the proposed U.S. budget bill expands access to health savings accounts, the company's CEO said last week. 'The big, beautiful bill has the potential for expanding HSA [programs], which would create even more market share for us,' Wex CEO Melissa Smith said at a June 4 investor conference hosted by the financial firm William Blair. The proposed U.S. budget pending before Congress may increase the number of individuals eligible for an HSA. It also includes provisions that might increase the amount of money consumers can contribute to HSAs and expand options for spending money in the accounts. The budget proposal could make another 20 million HSA accounts available for a 15% increase, William Blair analysts estimated in a Thursday note to clients. Portland, Maine-based Wex provides payments software and cards for a host of purposes, including for employers' benefits administration as well as other uses, such as transportation fleet expense management. The company has about a 5% market share in the benefits administration arena, Smith said. 'The overall growth of HSAs has slowed, but we still have a lot of market to continue to penetrate,' Smith said at the conference. The publicly-traded company has been aggressive in its acquisition strategy in recent years across its segments. On the benefits administration front, it paid $180 million to acquire a health and benefits unit from the financial services company Ascensus in July 2023. The CEO is also pulling other levers to pump up demand. Wex is in the early stages of increasing spending on sales and marketing this year, she noted at the conference. The company is under shareholder pressure, as Wex shares have dropped about 20% this year, compared to a 2% decline in the Standard & Poor's 500 index. In commenting on the stock decline after Smith's comments at the conference, analysts at William Blair said: 'We do not see a near-term catalyst for shares other than a strategic sale or restructuring.' Nonetheless, they said in the note that they don't see that as likely, based on her comments. At the company's annual meeting last month, about a third of votes cast were against Smith and some other Wex board members, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Of the 30 million votes cast for or against Smith, who is also the Wex board chair, about 10 million were against re-electing her to the board. While all the directors recommended by the company were ultimately elected, it's uncommon for such polls to generate so much dissent. In a vote of confidence in the company, Smith's family personally bought 3,721 Wex shares worth about $500,000 last month, according to an SEC filing. Analysts at Robert W. Baird noted the Smith stock purchase and told clients in a report last Tuesday that they 'view this as a good indication that the company is performing reasonably well.' A spokesperson for Wex didn't respond to a request for additional comment. Recommended Reading Wex CEO taps endurance to lead

Confident Steve Smith relishing Lord's reunion
LONDON, ENGLAND - JUNE 10: Steve Smith of Australia at Lord's Cricket Ground on June 10, 2025 in London, England. (Photo by Alex Davidson-ICC/ICC via Getty Images) By Charlie Bennett at Lord's The Home of Cricket is where the heart is for Steve Smith, and the batting great believes Australia's excellent Lord's record puts them in a strong position for the ICC World Test Championship Final 2025. Advertisement Australia defend their title against South Africa from Wednesday, and they could not have hand-picked a better venue outside of their home country. Traditionally, Australia have always thrived at Lord's. They have won two of their last three Test matches here and were unbeaten between 1934 and 2009 – a run of 18 Tests. Add to that, they have won seven of their last 10 ODIs since 2005. As you would expect for a player with 36 Test centuries and an average of 56.74, Smith has an excellent Lord's record as well. He scored a double-century in an Ashes Test 10 years ago, and 110 in 2023, helping him to 525 runs in total and an average of 58.33. Indeed, he is just 51 runs away from becoming the highest-scoring overseas player in Lord's history – an honour that currently belongs to his countryman Warren Bardsley, who last walked through the Long Room with pads on 99 years ago. Advertisement So, it is no wonder Smith – relaxed and refreshed after a three-month break from cricket – is in a confident mood. 'We have been training really well, the last week or so,' he said. 'The batters feel like they are in a good place, now we will go out and play. We have very fond memories of the World Test Championship Final from down the road at The Oval. 'Coming here to Lord's, it's a place we have traditionally played good cricket so we are excited about the prospect of facing South Africa here. 'The Dukes ball is a bit different to what we have with our home and away games most of the time, but we are excited about this contest.' Advertisement Breaking the habit of a lifetime, Smith has downed tools since the ICC Men's Champions Trophy 2025, where Australia lost in the semi-finals to India. Even in his time off, he normally keeps a bat close at hand so he can practice in the mirror. But this time, he opted for a clean break and peppered his social media channels with updates of his life in New York City with wife Dani. At 36, Smith is refusing to look too far into the future and has previously conceded this may well be his last appearance at Lord's – with Australia not due to play here again until 2027. Still, with four Test hundreds in his last eight innings, he remains one of the best players in the world, and so it is no surprise that, when he picked up a bat again last week, things immediately clicked into place. Advertisement And it is a good thing it did. South Africa boast one of the best bowling attacks in the world, led by Kagiso Rabada – second in the ICC Men's Test Bowling rankings – and Marco Jansen, and Smith admits he and his fellow batters will be under pressure. 'Us batters have our work cut out,' he said. 'They're a good side, they're here for a reason. South Africa have been a good cricket side for a long time. 'I have had a good break, had a couple of months off, and had a first hit the other day, and it has clicked into place. 'It is a nice place to bat, I have had some success. It takes time to get used to the slope, but you get value for shots, especially hitting down the hill. Advertisement 'It can be nice to hit on. It can be tricky when it moves around, batting here is about playing what is in front of you. 'Spin will play a big part as the game goes on as well. It is dry, there has not been too much rain, it does look dry, and I think spin will come into it.' Smith has seen it all and won it all too. A world champion in all three formats, he admits Australia's 2023 World Test Championship success ranks as high as any other. 'It was right up there to win it,' he said. 'It was great to win a Test Champ final, and be back here to defend our crown. We have had a good team for four years now and we're desperate to defend it.' © ICC Business Corporation FZ LLC 2025
