Maryland has hired Jim Smith as its next athletic director, the university announced Thursday, offering some stability to an athletic department that weathered several high-profile departures this spring.
Smith joins the Terrapins from Major League Baseball, where he has been the Atlanta Braves' senior vice president for business strategy since 2020.
Previously, he held several different executive roles with the Atlanta Falcons, including as chief marketing officer and revenue office vice president, and was the general manager and vice president of the Columbus Crew of Major League Soccer from 2000-04.

He has college experience as well, having served as the associate athletic director for marketing and communications at Ohio State.
Maryland leadership prioritized candidates with experience in revenue generation, according to ESPN.
'As college athletics rapidly evolves, Jim brings valuable administrative and business experience, plus the energy, vision and passion to lead our athletics program to new levels of success and impact,' Maryland president Darryll Pines said in a statement.
Smith replaces Damon Evans, who left the Terrapins in March to become the new athletic director at SMU.
Evans' departure came at a busy and awkward time for Maryland. The school's men's basketball team advanced to the Sweet 16 for the first time in nine years, but it did so as its coach, Kevin Willard, publicly lamented the university's financial commitment to its men's basketball program while he was being linked to the opening at Villanova, a job he ultimately accepted shortly after the Terrapins lost to eventual national champion Florida in the regional semifinals.
With Colleen Sorem serving as Maryland's interim athletic director, the university hired Buzz Williams to replace Willard.
'It is a great honor to be chosen to lead the athletics department at the University of Maryland and to guide UMD's storied programs into the next era,' Smith said in a statement. 'I am highly motivated to build upon excellence and lead Maryland forward in a dynamic and pivotal time for intercollegiate athletics, with a sharp focus on student-athlete health, well-being and academic success.'

Springfield hosts Red Angus Youth Expo for agriculture education
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Staff and vendors are setting up for the Red Angus Youth Expo at the Ozark Empire Fairgrounds, which helps kids learn about agriculture. On Sunday, young adults came to register for the expo. They expect hundreds of people from around the world to show up. 'We have roughly 400 animals entered here with about 200 exhibitors here, or close to that,' said Kelly Smith, director of commercial marketing for Red Angus. The Red Angus Youth Expo not only draws people to Springfield from across multiple states, but also from other countries as well. 'All over the United States, even some from Canada. So we do have some people outside the country that have ventured down here to Springfield to exhibit their animals,' said Smith. Table Rock State Park completes improvements to Campground 2, ribbon cutting this week According to Smith, there's a global demand for American beef products. 'Beef prices right now for the rancher through the markets are really at record highs,' Smith said. 'And the reason for that is because supply and demand is exactly what it is. The demand for our beef products in this country are overwhelming.' Zachary Griffith is the vice president of the Junior Ranching Association. He says the expo teaches young people about the future of agriculture. 'We expect around 270, 275 kids that we see throughout the time. And it's a great experience for these kids to come out,' Griffith said. 'We do educational opportunities, and we learn about different parts and perspectives of agriculture within the beef industry as a whole.' He is concerned, however, about how tariffs will impact their way of life. 'Imports are a big thing with us. I mean, we still import and export beef year-round,' said Griffith. 'I mean, being the number one beef producer in the world, we produce beef for everybody, not just ourselves. So it's our livelihood at line. These tariffs kind of affect just not only us but the other people in the future of agriculture as a whole.' The Red Angus Youth Expo will be in Springfield from June 8-13. Braves Face 'Unthinkable' Michael Harris II Decision as Concerns Mount
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. The Atlanta Braves saw a brutal losing streak extend to seven games after falling to the San Francisco Giants on Sunday and their issues are getting difficult to ignore. The team sits at 10 games below .500 and 14 games back from the lead in the National League East division and it's starting to seem as if their playoff streak is going to come to an end. Among the many issues have been a shaky bullpen, injuries and streaky hitting throughout the lineup. But one of the biggest has been the lack of offense from center fielder Michael Harris II. "Despite playing elite defense, Harris is one of the worst qualified centerfielders in baseball this year thanks to a bat that has gone missing in action," wrote Mitchell Barbee of FanSided. "With the Braves continuing to free fall, the club might have to do the unthinkable to get their centerfielder back on track." Harris has a concerning .237/.265/.343 slash line so far this year, which marks lows across the board for his four-year career with the Braves. Despite his stellar defense and emergence as one of the team's cornerstone players, the Braves have to consider sending Harris to the minor leagues where he can work on retooling his approach to the plate. Cox/Getty Images) More Cox/Getty "The Braves desperately need to get Harris back on track, but if the lefty continues to look as lost as he does at the plate, they might have no option but to send him down for 10 days to get his swing back on track," Barbee added. "The Braves are certainly not expected to banish Harris to the minors forever, but if Harris cannot make the adjustment quickly, the Braves might have no other option but to play Eli White and Jose Azocar in center while Harris relearns his power stroke." As harsh as Harris' season has been so far, the Braves have good reason to believe he can bounce back with a brief change of scenery. He won the National League Rookie of the Year Award thanks to a special combination of defense and offense after slashing .297/.339/.514 that year. His offense has regressed every year since, but those tools must still be there somewhere. If the Braves can unlock a turnaround by sending him to the minors for a bit, their lineup could get a major boost when he returns. More MLB: Yankees Given Trade 'Priority' as Infielder Faces Cut
