Aussie in stunning Wimbledon moment as joy tinged with sadness for de Minaur's fiancee

Yahoo2 days ago
Jordan Thompson continued his improbable run at Wimbledon on Wednesday night, battling back to win another five-set epic while defying injury. But it was heartbreak for adopted Aussie Katie Boulter, who lost to lucky loser Solana Sierra in another disappointing grand slam result.
Thompson admitted before Wimbledon he'd be lucky to make it onto court, and would probably have to take the rest of the year off to get his body right. But the Aussie has surged into the third round after two five-setters, beating Benjamin Bonzi 7-5 6-7 (2-7) 4-6 6-2 6-4 in just shy of four hours on Wednesday.
Playing with pain-killers and sporting a large brace on his back in between matches, Thompson has somehow managed to win twice to continue his charge. After Bonzi hit his final return into the net, Thompson let out a primal scream and pointed to his heart.
After his first-round win over Vit Kopriva - when he came from two sets down - Thompson looked shattered and wondered if he would even be able to start Wednesday's match. But he made it into court 15 to face the man who had shocked last year's semi-finalist Daniil Medvedev in the first round.
Thompson is a better player than the 29-year-old Frenchman who has never been inside the top 40, and he showed that from the start. But Bonzi turned the tide and won the second and third sets, making Thompson change his gameplan.
The fifth set could have gone either way as both men battled fatigue, but Thompson got the match-winning break of serve at 6-5. Fans were blown away by his courage and determination to keep fighting.

Amazing effort from Jordan Thompson to reach the 3RD at Wimbledon for only the second time. He won his second consecutive 5 setter, this time from 2 sets to 1 down beating Benjamin Bonzi 64 in the 5th

Jordan Thompson finishes his match against Bonzi with 91 points played at the net.Thompson (183 cm tall) and Mochizuki are the only players so far at the tournament to approach the net more than 70 times in a match. https://t.co/9arA7JeBhO

'I'm just praying I can get back on the court,' he said before the match. 'I'll do everything I can; live in an ice bath or hyperbaric chamber. I'll hardly practice. I'm taking painkillers, anti-inflammatories, but sometimes they can't really help. I'm just lucky to be on court even though it is sad that it's Wimbledon and I am not enjoying it as much as I usually do.
'I love playing tennis, competing, running around. I love getting the balls I probably shouldn't and I can't do that at the moment. It's extremely frustrating to watch balls go past me that I'm not even close to because I can't move. Practising, warming up, is just putting my body through hell."
Thompson's win came with a tinge of sadness for the Aussie contingent, with Alex de Minaur's fiancee Boulter crashing out in the second round. The British star, who has become an adopted Aussie due to her fiance, hit 14 double faults and was unable to back-up her stunning victory over ninth-seed Paula Badosa in the first round.
'Of course it hurts,' Boulter said after the 6-7 (7) 6-2 6-1 loss World No.101 Sierra. 'It's a really tough pill to swallow. It always is here. Unfortunately it's just the way that it is. Not my best day. I think I have to sometimes just credit the opponent here. I think I've got a lot of things to go back and work on.'
Sierra had only made the main draw as a 'lucky loser' from qualifying after a late injury withdrawal. 'I really felt like she played a great match," Boulter added. "I felt like she committed to the ball. It was coming through very fast. I couldn't quite control it. Credit to her, she swung and she won the match. I'm happy for her. But I have to go back to the drawing board.'

With a worried de Minaur looking on from the stands, Boulter's serve deserted her. The World No.43 won just one point on her second serve after the first set, and appeared to come unstuck when the court was bathed in shadows late in the match.

Wimbledon: Ben Shelton needs four points and about a minute to wrap up a win

LONDON (AP) — Two-time Grand Slam semifinalist Ben Shelton needed all of about a minute and exactly four points — three of which were aces — to wrap up a 6-2, 7-5, 6-4 victory over Rinky Hijikata on Friday in a second-round Wimbledon match suspended the night before because of darkness at 5-4 in the third set. 'Very different playing over two days and coming out for whatever that was — 55 seconds? — today,' the 10th-seeded Shelton said. 'I was hoping to maybe hit a few groundstrokes today. I might have to go to the practice courts.' The American, who reached the final four at the 2023 U.S. Open and this year's Australian Open, was about to try to serve out the match on Thursday at 9:30 p.m. when action was halted at No. 2 Court, which does not have a roof or artificial lights. They came back out to the same stadium a little less than 16 hours later and, after a warmup period that was quite a bit longer the resumption of actual play, Shelton began with a 141 mph ace. The 22-year-old left-hander then hit a second serve that resulted in a framed return by Hijikata, followed with an ace at 140 mph and one more at 118 mph to end things quickly. 'You come out here, serving for the match, the nerves are there a little bit. To hit three aces and take the pressure off of myself, I couldn't have been happier with what I came out here and did," said Shelton, who will face 105th-ranked Marton Fucsovics of Hungary for a chance to reach the fourth round at the All England Club for the second consecutive year. Shelton told the crowd: "I'm sorry that you guys didn't really get to see much tennis.' Right before things were halted Thursday, Shelton held three match points while leading 5-3 and at love-40 on Hijikata's serve. But but the 87th-ranked Hijikata grabbed the next five points to extend the contest. 'A great match,' he said. 'A clean match.' ___

Sonay Kartal breaks new ground with brilliant third-round victory at Wimbledon

Super Sonay Kartal roared into the fourth round at Wimbledon after sweeping aside French qualifier Diane Parry. The 23-year-old from Brighton is in the last 16 of a grand slam for the first time in her career after a sizzling 6-4 6-2 victory. Advertisement Kartal, ranked 298 this time last year, is on the cusp of the top 50 and could even finish the tournament as British number one, usurping Emma Raducanu and Katie Boulter. Sonay Kartal overcame an early break to sweep aside Diane Parry (Mike Egerton/PA) She is the fourth unseeded British woman to reach the fourth round this century after Laura Robson, Heather Watson and Raducanu, and will face Russian veteran Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova for a place in the quarter-finals. 'Everyone in this tournament is an unbelievable player but I respect everyone the same,' she said. 'I will try my best to approach the next match in the same way. I try to stay calm off court, but I am so grateful to get the win today.' Kartel has been shining on Court Three this week, but now she was first up on Court One and began with a mixed bag of a service game, with back-to-back aces and a double fault before Parry broke. Advertisement But from 4-1 down Kartal battled back to lead 5-4 and confidently served out the opening set to love. Parry's ranking of 103 belies her talent with her progress stymied by two recent knee injuries, and she beat 12th seed Diana Shnaider to reach the third round. But Kartal had the 22-year-old's number and promptly roared a double break ahead at the start of the second set. When Kartal held to love for a 4-0 lead she had won nine games in a row. An ace brought up match point and when Parry's return floated long Kartal celebrated an outstanding win in an hour and 22 minutes.

Portugal's Francisco Cabral on receiving permission to alter Wimbledon dress code to pay tribute to Diogo Jota: ‘An honor'

Portuguese tennis player Francisco Cabral was given permission to stray from Wimbledon's strict all-white dress code to honor the late Liverpool and Portugal soccer star Diogo Jota, he told reporters, including CNN, on Friday. Jota died in a car crash in Spain early Thursday morning. He was 28. His brother, André Silva – who was also a professional soccer player – also died in the accident at the age of 25. Cabral, who competed in men's doubles, told CNN he initially wanted to wear a black armband, but he said he was told that would not be allowed. He was granted approval to wear a small black ribbon instead. The AELTC said to CNN in a statement: 'We are always open to having conversations with players regarding such matters, and given the tragic circumstances, the Referee's Office has approved the players wearing a black ribbon as a mark of respect and condolence.' Cabral, ranked 40th in the world in doubles, won his first-round match Thursday but fell in the second round Friday with his playing partner Lucas Miedler of Austria. 'Yesterday, I came up with the idea of wearing a black strap, but that was not allowed,' Cabral said. 'The players' relations, they had a black ribbon, and I asked for let me play with it and I just did it this morning. 'It was an honor. It's not for the best reason. But yeah, he was not only an inspiration to me but for the country in general, he meant so much in the sport. He conquered so much in his life. So it was just an honor for me to try and help, if only 1% for the family and everybody.' There is one Portuguese man left in the singles draw: Nuno Borges is scheduled to play Friday against Russian and No. 17 seed Karen Khachanov.
