By Milly McEvoy in Birmingham
The men's doubles top seeds Kim Astrup and Anders Skaarup Rasmussen were knocked out in straight games on Day 1 of the YONEX All England Badminton Championships 2025.
Up against Muhammad Shohibul Fikri and Daniel Marthin of Indonesia, the Danish duo lost 22-20 21-18 in a closely-fought battle to record a famous win.
Other big names to fall were last year's beaten men's doubles finalists Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik as they were beaten by Rasmus Kjaer and Frederik Sogaard 21-16 16-21 21-18 in a match lasting over an hour.
Rasmussen and Astrup were knocked out in the first round for the third tournament in succession having experienced the same fate at the Malaysia Open and India Open in January.
In their first meeting with Fikri and Marthin, the world No.16s, Astrup and Rasmussen let a game point go in the first game and were unable to halt their opponents march to victory.
Other top seeds survived the pressure that comes with their billing as Soon Huat Goh and Shevon Jemie Lai of Malaysia came through a three-set battle in the mixed doubles.
Having won the first game 22-20, Goh and Lai were overpowered by Thailand's Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Supissara Paewsampran 21-9.

The world no.3s then battled to the win, claiming the third 21-18 to set-up a second-round tie with Scotland's Alexander Dunn and Julie MacPherson of Scotland in the second round.
Lai said: 'We prepared really hard for this tournament and it is an honour for us to be the first seeds, it is almost history for our country.
'We would like to make more history of making it onto the podium if that is possible for us.
Viktor Axelsen: This will be a golden age for badminton
'We will give our best and, looking at the draw, we have overcome one very tough opponent and we have a few more to go and we will prepare ourselves and we will bring more history for our country.'
In the men's singles, Yu Qi Shi of China made it through with a 21-13 21-8 defeat of Chico Aura Dwi Wardoyo of Indonesia, needing just 34 minutes to advance.
While Jonatan Christie's defence got off to the best possible start with a win over Leong Jun Hao of Malaysia.
However, another former men's singles champion in the form of Zii Jia Lee was knocked out in three games by Ka Long Angus Ng of Hong Kong.
Ng said: 'I have lost five consecutive matches to him in the past, so this time I finally ended the losing streak. It really means a lot to me in this match.
"I've suffered from a few first round exits here at the All England in the past few years. Every time I heard a lot of Hong Kong supporters coming to support us.

'Every time I want to do something in front of them. This time I hope I really did it and I tried not to make them disappointed.'
English hopes were carried by Ben Lane and Sean Vendy who advanced to the second round with a battling win over Yew Sin Ong and Ee Yi Teo of Malaysia in the men's doubles.
Day 2 Preview: Doubles defences begin on Wednesday
The USA's Beiwen Zhang came from a game down to knock out the world no.9 Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand in the women's singles.
Intanon had taken the lead comfortably in the first before Zhang hit back to win 12-21 21-18 21-19.
Elsewhere, 2022 champion Akane Yamaguchi was dominant, beating Thuy Linh Nguyen 21-19 21-12.
In the women's doubles, fourth seeds Rin Iwanaga and Kie Nakanishi survived a scare as they defeated Nga Ting Yeung and Pui Lam Yeung 17-21 21-12 21-16.
Their Japanese compatriots Yuki Fukushima and Mayu Matsumoto, who are both former women's doubles winners in different partnerships, were delighted to make it through in straight games.
Fukushima said: 'It's an honour to be able to pay in such a historical tournament.
'To be able to play in this new pair and to be given this chance is really a privilege. We'd like to make use of this chance and enjoy it.
'In retrospect I wasn't imagining I'd be able to be here this year. We'd like to have a very good time together here.'

The Los Angeles Lakers leaned heavily on Rui Hachimura throughout the regular season, as he averaged 13.1 points and 5.0 rebounds per game, shooting 50.9% from the field over 68 appearances. Known for his efficient scoring and perimeter shooting ability, Hachimura emerged as a key starting player next to superstars LeBron James and Luka Doncic. Advertisement In the first round of the playoffs against Minnesota, Hachimura maintained his productivity, averaging 14.8 points, 4.6 rebounds, and one assist in 36.4 minutes per game across five contests. He delivered two standout 23-point performances in Games 4 and 5. However, the Lakers could not get past the Timberwolves, and now face questions in the NBA offseason. With the team exploring roster changes—particularly to add interior rebounding—the 6-foot‑8 forward's expiring contract makes him a trade candidate. Advertisement Amid this speculation, Hachimura shared an Instagram carousel documenting his time in Cuba, including a photo of him playing basketball with locals. The forward's offseason activity drew several fan reactions on social media. 'Rui everywhere,' one fan wrote. 'Damn Rui still looking for a center I see,' another fan posted. 'He can chill there until he learns how to rebound at 6'8,' a third fan added. 'Looking for a center huh,' another fan echoed. 'Cuba is amazing 🇨🇺 I love this place," said another. "Bro's making a world tour," said another. "HOPE YOUR HAVING THE BEST TIME THERE," a fan wrote in all caps. Mizzou QB Beau Pribula to Attend Manning Passing Academy
Mizzou QB Beau Pribula to Attend Manning Passing Academy originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Missouri quarterback Beau Pribula will be among the attendees at this year's prestigious Manning Passing Academy, held from June 26-29 at Nicholls State University in Thibodaux, Louisiana. Advertisement The camp announced his invitation in an Instagram post highlighting some of the quarterbacks set to attend. Pribula, a transfer from Penn State, will join an impressive list of college quarterbacks including Texas' Arch Manning, Clemson's Cade Klubnik, LSU's Garrett Nussmeier, Texas A&M's Marcel Reed, and South Carolina's LaNorris Sellers. In total, eight SEC quarterbacks will participate in the camp. The Manning Passing Academy, operated by Manning family members including Archie, Peyton, Eli, and Cooper, focuses on refining fundamental skills for quarterbacks, running backs, wide receivers and tight ends. It serves as one of the top offseason development opportunities for college talent ahead of the upcoming season. Quarterback Beau Pribula talks with Rainville / USA TODAY NETWORK A native of York, Pennsylvania, Pribula spent two seasons backing up Drew Allar at Penn State before transferring to Mizzou this offseason. He passed for 424 yards, nine touchdowns, and one interception during his Nittany Lion career, while adding 10 rushing touchdowns. Advertisement While Missouri hasn't officially named a starter, Pribula is the favorite to lead the Tigers onto the field in 2025. With fellow quarterback competition Sam Horn drawing MLB Draft interest and lacking in-game experience, Pribula appears ready to take command of the Mizzou offense. The camp invitation is another sign that those around Pribula—and those watching—believe in his potential, but fans will still have to wait and see who takes the first snap for the Tigers this fall. Joe Flacco talks about 'embarrassing' TikTok dances: 'Be an adult'
Joe Flacco is the elder statesman of the Cleveland Browns quarterback room. Having just turned 40 in January, Flacco has morphed into the "back in my day guy" and is now just one step away from telling the young whippersnappers to get off his lawn. Flacco has embraced that youthful energy in the twilight of his NFL career, taking the opportunity to pose for a fun photo at media day with rookie, Dillon Gabriel. Advertisement Regardless, he continued to provide plenty of entertainment for the media following Wednesday's minicamp practices, turning the session into a chat about social media, TikTok and posting dancing videos online. Flacco began discussing Twitter, now known as X, as it has evolved into a primary source of news. "The difference now is, everybody's getting their stuff from there, and it's treated a little bit more seriously because that is the main news source," Flacco said, via 92.3 The Fan's Daryl Ruiter. "You still have the same thing you always had, which is a million different opinions, but it kind of blends your actual news source with a bunch of other stuff." The quarterback went on to say that Instagram is the only social media platform he's used and made one thing clear –don't expect him to show up in a TikTok dancing video anytime soon. Advertisement "No TikTok dances," Flacco said. "The fact that people want to get on their phones and show people. That's embarrassing! You're an adult. Be an adult. I can't wrap my head around that." He followed up with some advice for the parents. "I get it, you have kids and you wanna have fun with your kids," Flacco added. "Like, have fun with your kids in private." Flacco appears to be no fan of the current social media landscape, but he also extended his media availability to discuss the good old days. While he wasn't walking up and down the rolling hills in 10 feet of snow to school, the quarterback did end up speaking about players who think offseason activities are too hard in the modern NFL. Advertisement "We're out there for an hour 15 minutes and guys think it's hard," Flacco said via Yahoo Sports' Jori Epstein, referencing the two-a-days that used to be commonplace in the NFL. He went on to add that organized team activities (OTAs) used to be over two hours, highlighting just how much has changed since he entered the league in 2008. In other words, Flacco was in a reminiscing mood as the Super Bowl champion prepares for his 18th season in the league.
