Tens of thousands march in support of Israel in Toronto

Canada Standard7 days ago

TORONTO, Canada - Tens of thousands of people from across Canada have marched in support of Israel in a massive turnout in Toronto.
The annual Walk with Israel organized by the UJA Federation of Greater Toronto comes in the face of rising calls for an end to the war in Gaza and return of the remaining hostages.
Toronto Police put the numbers in attendance of the 56th annual event on Sunday at 56,000.
"This was a significant day for our community," Ken Tanenbaum, chair of the UJA Feeration said Monday.
"The strong turnout reflects our shared commitment to Israel and the strength of our diverse community here in Toronto," he said.
Funds raised on the day will be sent to Israel to assist with humanitarian aid and for the communities most affected by the horrific Hamas-led attacks of 7 October 2023.
"The Walk with Israel by UJA Federation of Greater Toronto and Toronto's Jewish community powerfully expresses Canadian Jewry's unwavering commitment to the State of Israel," William Kleinbaum, Managing Director, UJA Federation of Greater Toronto, said Monday.
"As the largest Jewish community in Canada, Toronto plays a central role in preserving Jewish identity and strengthening the unbreakable bond with Israel. In these challenging times in Israel and Canada, the walk sends a clear message of solidarity, hope, and resilience," Kleinbaum added.
"What we witnessed today was more than a mass gathering; it was a declaration," Adam Minsky, president and CEO of the UJA Federation said Monday.
"Thousands of Jewish Torontonians and allies came together to stand for democracy, peace, and the right of Jews to live safely in Israel and here, in Canada," Minsky continued.
The UJA of Greater Toronto paid tribute to the attendees with a post on Facebook. " What a day! Thank you to the thousands who showed up to Walk with Israel, your energy, pride, and community spirit made this year's event unforgettable," the post said.
"A special thank you to the Toronto Police, our security teams, and the incredible volunteers whose hard work and diligence ensured a safe and joyful day for all. Your dedication behind the scenes made it all possible." "To our community: we're so grateful. You walked, you danced, you celebrated, and most importantly, you showed up for Israel and each other," the UJA Facebook post said.

'These stores, and the communities they support, have endured a long road through the pandemic and years of uncertainty, and financial loss,' she said during a Tuesday press conference on Parliament Hill. Barrett, joined by the mayors of Sarnia and Windsor, released an open letter to the government calling for action to save Canada's land border duty free shops, signed by 15 mayors of Canadian border cities and towns. 'The strain in the U.S.-Canada relationship has triggered an immediate and dramatic drop in cross-border traffic,' Barrett told reporters. Customer numbers fell almost overnight, she said, and the sharp decline has continued — bad news for an industry largely consisting of independent and family-run businesses that cater exclusively to cross-border traffic. In their letter to Prime Minister Mark Carney and Finance Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne, the association is asking for government support via Export Development Canada, the Business Development Bank of Canada and the Canada Small Business Financing Program, government reaffirmation of the export status of land border duty free stores, and aligning Canada's excise tax policies to level the playing field with their American counterparts. Some mayors who signed the letter include Sue McKortoff of Osoyoos, B.C., Wayne Redekop of Fort Erie, Justin Towndale of Cornwall and Woodstock, Man.'s Trina Jones. 'There are 3,000 jobs at stake right across the country at duty free stores.' Bradley said duty free stores are still recovering from the two-year border shutdowns during the COVID-19 pandemic, which he said had a dramatic impact. Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens — whose city is home to Canada's busiest land border crossing — said the impact is coming from the drop in discretionary cross-border travel sparked by opposition to U.S. President Donald Trump's trade war against Canada. 'Sales in the Windsor region are down by 40% — these are small, independently-owned businesses who've just come back from COVID, we're trying to get our traffic back to pre-COVID levels. We're not quite there yet, and now we've got another hit these businesses,' he said, adding what's happening in his city and Sarnia is reflected in border towns across Canada. bpassifiume@ X: @bryanpassifiume World Canada Wrestling Sunshine Girls Olympics

Judge orders rethink of preservation plan for endangered piping plovers on East Coast

In a decision released yesterday, Justice Richard Southcott sent the piping plover recovery plan back to the federal environment minister for 'reconsideration.' The judge wrote that federal lawyers had failed to 'intelligibly respond' to the concerns raised by Nature Nova Scotia and the East Coast Environmental Law Association about the plan approved by the minister in 2022. Piping plovers are small shorebirds that nest primarily on sand, gravel or cobblestone beaches. The court heard that there are only between 170 to 190 nesting pairs left, well below the 2022 plan's goal of 310 pairs.
