Senator eyes history as PKR's first elected veep from Borneo

PETALING JAYA : A Sarawak PKR division chief is aiming to make history in PKR's central leadership elections by becoming the first person from Borneo to be elected party vice-president.
Hulu Rajang division chief Abun Sui Anyit, who is a senator, is among 12 leaders vying for the four vice-president's posts. He wants to represent the voice of Borneo as well as the Dayak community.
He hopes that delegates will give him their support when they cast their ballots come May 23, vowing to listen and represent the voice of the grassroots.
'Together, we can create history (by electing) a Borneo representative (as vice-president) in this national party, which represents various races and religions,' he said, according to The Borneo Post.
Abun, currently a central leadership council member, also stated support for Nurul Izzah Anwar in her challenge for the deputy president's post, currently held by Rafizi Ramli.
Abun said both Nurul Izzah and Rafizi were key figures for PKR, and that he would have liked to have two posts of deputy president if that were possible.
'However, the PKR constitution provides for only one deputy president's post. Like it or not, I had to make the rather difficult decision of choosing between the two. I hope that whatever the result, both of them would still be given important roles to lead the party to a more glorious direction,' he added.
Besides Abun, the 12 contestants for the PKR vice-presidencies include the four incumbents, federal ministers Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad and Chang Lih Kang as well as menteris besar Amirudin Shari and Aminuddin Harun.

Anwar said these challenges include development and income disparities, limited fiscal space, and the slow pace of structural economic transformation. 'Malaysia must build greater resilience to face global economic risks and uncertainties, while accelerating structural reforms and narrowing socio-economic development gaps,' he said in a Facebook post. Earlier, Anwar chaired a high-level discussion on the 13MP's preparation with senior government officials. He said the preparation of the document, which began in mid-2024, is the result of a collaborative effort and comprehensive feedback on proposed strategies and initiatives from a wide range of stakeholders. These stakeholders include various ministries, state governments, local authorities, civil society organisations and the general public. Last month, a business group expressed concern about the 13MP following the resignation of economy minister Rafizi Ramli. The Small and Medium Enterprises Association of Malaysia (Samenta) warned that the country risked missing out on yet another economic cycle (2026–2030) if key reforms outlined in the plan were not retained and fully implemented. Rafizi resigned as the economy minister on May 28 following his defeat to Nurul Izzah Anwar in the race for the PKR deputy president's post. The Pandan MP said his final responsibility as economy minister was to complete the 13MP, which will be tabled in Parliament in the upcoming meeting from July 21 to Aug 28.

Close ranks and unite behind Anwar ahead of key elections, says Ramanan
KUALA LUMPUR: PKR vice-president Datuk Seri R. Ramanan has urged party members to set aside their differences and unite behind party president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as PKR prepares for the upcoming Sabah state election and the 16th general election. He said party unity and internal stability were vital to ensuring the success of the reform agenda championed by Anwar and the party. "The struggle must continue. We need to move on, reunite, and stand firmly with the president to deliver our shared vision. Party unity and stability must be our foundation," he said. Ramanan was speaking after attending the Organisational Strengthening Seminar in Melaka, which also featured a special engagement session with Anwar. The event brought together key leaders and grassroots representatives from across the state, aimed at reinforcing party structures and mobilising support ahead of crucial national polls. "This was not just a symbolic gathering. It served as a concrete platform to reinforce the party's organisational machinery, from the grassroots right up to the central leadership," he added. He said Anwar, in his address, stressed the importance of all members being open-hearted and moving past the differences that arose during the party elections. "He reminded everyone that the election phase is over, and now is the time to close ranks, move forward together, and double down on our efforts for the future of the party and the country. "In his speech, the president also called on members to rebuild ties among themselves, even if some were disheartened by the recent election outcomes." Ramanan also expressed appreciation to the grassroots for their continued commitment, and called on all members to "close ranks" and remain focused on the party's broader mission. "Keadilan is more than just a political party. It is a people's movement. It is our hope, our home. Let us strengthen our resolve, rise together, and bring victory to Keadilan."

No Malaysians affected in Israel's strikes on Iran, says Foreign Ministry
