Umno's Puad says Tengku Zafrul just trying to fill Rafizi void, will be a liability to PKR

KUALA LUMPUR, May 31 – Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Puad Zarkashi has criticised Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz following his resignation from the party, saying his entry into PKR would only burden the party. Puad repeated said Umno should not repeat its 'mistake' in rolling out the red carpet for Tengku Zafrul, which he accused of having 'no real loyalty'. 'Umno shouldn't mourn his departure. Let him go. He's simply trying to fill the void left by [Datuk Seri] Rafizi Ramli,' he was quoted saying by Free Malaysia Today, referring to former PKR deputy president. 'I believe Tengku Zafrul will become a liability to PKR.' Rafizi recently lost his post to Nurul Izzah Anwar, and has since resigned as economy minister. Puad said Umno had 'spoiled' Tengku Zafrul by appointing him as an election candidate, a division chief, a Supreme Council member, and finally with a Cabinet post as investment, trade and industry minister. 'It should never be repeated. Umno must stop bringing in individuals with no roots or commitment to the party. Tengku Zafrul never had any real loyalty to Umno,' he reportedly said. Puad, who is also Rengit assemblyman, claimed Tengku Zafrul had long distanced himself from Umno, skipping Supreme Council meetings, and should have been expelled sooner. Yesterday, Tengku Zafrul said he has resigned from Umno and announced plans to apply for membership in political ally PKR. The investment, trade and industry minister is also vacating his seat on the Umno Supreme Council as well as his position as its Kota Raja division chief. Tengku Zafrul previously said that he had joined Umno back in 1997. He served as CIMB Group chief executive for six years before resigning from his post after being appointed senator and the country's finance minister in 2020. He had contested the Kuala Selangor parliamentary seat in the 15th general election but was defeated by Parti Amanah Negara's Datuk Seri Dzulkefly Ahmad.

PKR's Plan B? The curious rise of Nurul Izzah amid legal shadows

LETTER | In Malaysian politics, timing is never a coincidence. The recent move to elevate Nurul Izzah Anwar as PKR deputy president has raised more than a few eyebrows, not just for its optics of dynastic politics, but also for the timing that aligns suspiciously with renewed murmurs about PKR president Anwar Ibrahim's pending case involving Yusoff Rawther. Could this strategic positioning be more than just a ceremonial promotion? Could it be PKR's Plan B, quietly acknowledging the possibility that Anwar might once again be entangled in a legal battle that could cost him his position? Let's not forget, the prime minister has applied for immunity, a highly unusual move for someone claiming innocence. Why seek immunity if you believe the case has no merit? Does the application suggest an underlying fear, a feeling of vulnerability, or a covert effort to ensure continuity should the judgment be unfavourable? Enter Nurul Izzah. Well-liked, media-savvy, and portrayed as the 'Puteri Reformasi', she checks all the boxes for public appeal. More importantly, she represents political insurance. With her as deputy president, PKR ensures the Anwar brand survives even if Anwar himself is sidelined. But this move isn't just about family ties. It's about consolidating control. It's about keeping PKR within the family circle, especially at a time when internal cracks are beginning to show and faith in reformist ideals continues to wane. The irony? PKR once prided itself as a party against nepotism and cronyism. Today, it mimics the very culture it sought to dismantle, with the daughter waiting in the wings just in case history repeats itself. Whether this is foresight or fear, one thing is clear. PKR is preparing for a future where Anwar may not be at the helm, voluntarily or otherwise. ‘I'm on leave, not gone': Rafizi breaks silence after quitting Cabinet, hints at next move

KUALA LUMPUR, May 30 — Former economy minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli has broken his silence just two days after announcing his resignation, telling followers that while he's officially on leave, he's far from checking out of public life. In a post on social media platform X today, the former PKR deputy president said he began his leave on Wednesday and will use the time to respond to the flood of messages he's received — and rejoin the public conversation online. 'I've started my leave on Wednesday. Mission now is to reply to thousands of messages and join the chatter here on X,' he wrote. Rafizi, who lost the PKR deputy president race to Nurul Izzah Anwar on May 23, stepped down from his Cabinet post earlier this week, citing the loss of party mandate to continue implementing reform policies within the government. In his latest post, he appeared calm and philosophical, adding that he has already mapped out his next steps — but would share them only after the dust settles from recent political developments. 'I already have a plan on what to focus on next, but let everyone breathe first — with Hari Raya Haji coming up and all,' he said. 'I'll share more later.' His post ended on a note that reflects a central tenet of his reformist outlook: 'The real potential of this country lies with ordinary people. We have to go back to harnessing this potential.' The Pandan MP's decision to exit government has stirred speculation about his future role in politics and public life. His last official day in office will be June 17, with the remainder of his time in government now being spent on annual leave. Ha3 X masih dah mula cuti hari Rabu, misi sekarang nak reply beribu2 mesej & join sama sembang dekat memang dah plan apa nak tumpu lepas ni, tapi biarlah semua orang tenang, raya haji saya kongsi sebenar negara adalah rakyat... — Rafizi Ramli (@rafiziramli) May 30, 2025

I have plans, Rafizi says in first message after resignation

Former PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli said he wants to wait for the situation to 'cool off'. PETALING JAYA : Rafizi Ramli, who resigned as the economy minister this week following his defeat at the PKR polls, says he has plans for the future which he will reveal later on. The former PKR deputy president also said that his resignation was still a hot topic on X. 'I do have plans on what I want to focus on, but I want to wait for the situation to cool off,' he said on the micro-blogging site. He said for now, he was busy responding to messages and engaging with social media users. 'The country's real potential is the public. We have to go back to harnessing this potential,' he said. Rafizi resigned two days ago in keeping with his promise that he would step down as a minister if he was not re-elected as PKR deputy president. He was defeated by Nurul Izzah Anwar at the party polls last weekend. The two-term Pandan MP had said it would be inappropriate for a Cabinet post to be held by someone who was not a member of the party's central leadership. His resignation will take effect on June 17. Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, who likewise resigned as the natural resources and environmental sustainability minister after failing to defend his PKR vice-presidency, said yesterday that he and Rafizi would remain loyal to the party. His post on X followed a viral text message claiming that 11 MPs from the party were retracting their support for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who is also the PKR president.

Finalise seat targets only after allies known, Nurul Izzah told

Published on: Tuesday, May 27, 2025 Published on: Tue, May 27, 2025 By: Anne Muhammad, FMT Text Size: Nurul Izzah Anwar says PKR should contest in at least 13 seats at the upcoming Sabah election but the state chapter's information chief Razeef Rakimin says the party is not yet able to finalise the number. PETALING JAYA: Sabah PKR will only be in a position to determine the number of seats it can contest in the upcoming state election once Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Barisan Nasional (BN) finalise their alliances, says a party leader. Sabah PKR information chief Razeef Rakimin told FMT negotiations within PH were already in their final phase and could be completed before next month. Talks between BN-PH and ruling state coalition Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) are still ongoing. Razeef said newly elected PKR deputy president Nurul Izzah Anwar's target of contesting in 13 seats may be 'too high', particularly if GRS joins the alliance. He called on PKR to wait until all electoral pacts are sealed before deciding how many seats the state chapter should contest. 'We've wrapped up discussions on PH's election machinery, and now the focus is on seat allocation. Our team will give its full commitment—not only to PH candidates but also, if applicable, to BN and GRS,' he said. A total of 73 seats will be contested in the upcoming Sabah polls, which must be held before the year ends. In the last state election in 2020, PKR secured only two seats. Advertisement PH and BN recently announced an alliance for the polls, while efforts are ongoing to also team up with GRS. Nurul Izzah has urged party president Anwar Ibrahim to negotiate with PH components and their allies to secure at least 13 seats for PKR in the election. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
