I have plans, Rafizi says in first message after resignation
Former PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli said he wants to wait for the situation to 'cool off'.
PETALING JAYA : Rafizi Ramli, who resigned as the economy minister this week following his defeat at the PKR polls, says he has plans for the future which he will reveal later on.
The former PKR deputy president also said that his resignation was still a hot topic on X.
'I do have plans on what I want to focus on, but I want to wait for the situation to cool off,' he said on the micro-blogging site.
He said for now, he was busy responding to messages and engaging with social media users.
'The country's real potential is the public. We have to go back to harnessing this potential,' he said.
Rafizi resigned two days ago in keeping with his promise that he would step down as a minister if he was not re-elected as PKR deputy president. He was defeated by Nurul Izzah Anwar at the party polls last weekend.
The two-term Pandan MP had said it would be inappropriate for a Cabinet post to be held by someone who was not a member of the party's central leadership.
His resignation will take effect on June 17.
Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, who likewise resigned as the natural resources and environmental sustainability minister after failing to defend his PKR vice-presidency, said yesterday that he and Rafizi would remain loyal to the party.
His post on X followed a viral text message claiming that 11 MPs from the party were retracting their support for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who is also the PKR president.

(File pic) KUALA LUMPUR : An activist has hit out at Pakatan Harapan leaders and MPs over their purported silence on the death of Teoh Beng Hock, 15 years after the young political aide's death in custody. At a gathering of Teoh's family and civil society groups tonight, A Jayanath of Saya Anak Bangsa Malaysia issued a blunt message to politicians who once stood with the family as they sought justice. 'During a protest for Teoh in 2009, many politicians from the opposition were then present. But tonight I don't see any of them. 'This is something all of us need to understand – politicians will make use of any issue (for their own benefit),' he said at the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall here, where the participants gathered to remember Teoh and demand accountability. Jayanath challenged those who once pledged support for Teoh to reflect on their role now that they are in government. He added that many of them had pledged to introduce institutional reforms once in power and ensure justice is served for Teoh. 'I am only making a very short speech — one call to these politicians. Tomorrow morning, can you please look at yourself in the mirror and ask what you are going to do about this? 'We have not seen (your efforts), and we are giving you one last chance to (ensure justice for Teoh).' Jayanath also called on those attending the gathering to take action by writing to their respective MPs and assemblymen to urge them to raise Teoh's case in Parliament or the state assemblies. Last week, the Teoh Beng Hock Association for Democratic Advancement urged all DAP ministers to resign in protest of the Attorney-General's Chambers' decision to classify the investigation into Teoh's case as requiring no further action, or NFA. The group said the ministers should also take responsibility on behalf of DAP for failing to fulfil the party's past promises involving Teoh. None of the DAP ministers have responded to the call yet. Teoh's sister, Lee Lan, also did not hold back in her remarks at the gathering, delivering a strong and emotional message to government leaders. 'Back then, all PH leaders told Malaysia that Teoh was murdered and that when they attain power, they will act on the case. 'But why was the investigation classified as NFA? This is a slap in the face for all PH supporters.' She also reminded Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim that he had promised to ensure justice for Teoh once appointed to the top post. Last month, Teoh's family was informed by police that their latest investigation into the case had been classified as NFA. Teoh was found dead on July 16, 2009 on the fifth floor of Plaza Masalam, Shah Alam, after being questioned for hours by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC). An inquest was held and the coroner returned an open verdict. However, the Court of Appeal in 2014 ruled that Teoh's death was caused by 'one or more persons unknown', including MACC officers. While the police's latest investigation was classified as NFA, several quarters have questioned why the probe was launched under Section 342 of the Penal Code, which is for wrongful confinement.

Government to set up task force to address serious financial irregularities
KUALA LUMPUR: The government will be setting up a special task force to address serious financial irregularities to strengthen the credibility of the country's fiscal management, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. In a post on his social media account, he said the decision was made during the Special Cabinet Committee on National Governance (JKKTN) meeting he chaired earlier today. Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, said that the committee had taken a serious view of the audit findings on financial irregularities as they could potentially affect the credibility of the country's fiscal management. "In line with efforts to strengthen the role of the National Audit Department through amendments to the Audit Act 1957, the JKKTN agreed to establish a special task force to address serious financial irregularities," he said, adding that this is to ensure more holistic, targeted, and effective response measures in accordance with the principles of accountability, transparency, and integrity. - BERNAMA

Ringgit closes slightly higher on cautious sentiment
KUALA LUMPUR : The ringgit closed higher against the dollar today, as traders remain cautious ahead of US president Donald Trump and Chinese president Xi Jinping's expected meeting this week, said an analyst. SPI Asset Management managing partner Stephen Innes said traders are slipping into a wait-and-see approach ahead of the Trump-Xi meeting, which could be a key factor in market risk for the rest of the week. 'Given that the US is the world's leading importer and China its largest exporter, their relationship could shift market sentiment in favour of the dollar, easing concerns about supply chain disruptions and imported inflation. 'This dynamic leaves emerging currencies like the ringgit in a reactive position – caught between two economic superpowers whose trade decisions heavily influence global pricing trends,' he told Bernama. At 6pm, the local note inched higher to 4.2425/4.2485 versus the greenback from last Friday's close of 4.2530/4.2605. At the close, the ringgit traded lower against a basket of major currencies. It slipped against the Japanese yen to 2.9695/2.9739 from Friday's close of 2.9531/2.9585, eased vis-a-vis the euro to 4.8415/4.8484 from 4.8169/4.8254, and depreciated against the British pound to 5.7337/5.7418 from 5.7284/5.7385 previously. The local note traded mixed against its Asean peers. It was slightly higher versus the Indonesian rupiah at 260.1/260.6 compared to 260.4/261.1 on Friday, and gained against the Philippine peso to 7.61/7.63 from 7.62/7.64 previously. However, it fell against the Singapore dollar to 3.2967/3.3016 from 3.2938/3.3002 on Friday and weakened vis-a-vis the Thai baht to 13.0334/13.0603 from 12.9507/12.9790 previously.
