Former Premier League referee Coote given eight-week ban over Klopp comments
Coote was sacked in December by Professional Game Match Officials Ltd (PGMOL) after a video circulated on social media the previous month of him making derogatory remarks about Klopp and Liverpool in 2020.
He has been further sanctioned by the FA for an 'aggravated breach' of rule E3.2, because of the reference he made to Klopp's German nationality in the video.
The FA's written reasons for the verdict announced Tuesday said Coote expressed 'deep remorse' and acknowledged his comments were 'crass and inappropriate'.
Coote was charged by the FA in June, with the English game's ruling body saying at the time he would face no further action in regard to separate allegations of gambling misconduct, which he had strenuously denied. The FA said those allegations had been fully investigated.
A video showing Coote snorting white powder, reportedly during Euro 2024, emerged in November.
Earlier this year European football's governing body Uefa banned Coote from any officiating activity until June 2026.
In a January interview Coote came out as gay and said his struggle to hide his sexuality had contributed to bad choices. — AFP

"It was a little bit nerve-wracking," Maxwell said after being adjudged player of the match. Earlier, put in to bat, South Africa overcame a top order wobble to post a competitive 172-7 with Dewald Brevis (53) top-scoring for them. The tourists were 49-3 inside seven overs but Brevis looked unfazed and hit Aaron Hardie for four sixes in an over, throwing the pacer out of the attack. Brevis raced to a 22-ball fifty but Maxwell took a brilliant running catch near the rope to dismiss him off the bowling of Nathan Ellis (3-31). Tristan Stubbs contributed 25 and Rassie van der Dussen made 38 not out down the order but South Africa still fell short of the 175-mark. Skipper Mitchell Marsh (54) led Australia's robust reply, dominating his 66-run opening stand with Travis Head (19). Kagiso Rabada floored a return catch from Marsh when the batter was on 26 and Aiden Markram gave a similar reprieve to Head off his own bowling. Head could not capitalise on it though and fell to Markram in the same over. Bosch bowled Josh Inglis for a first ball duck before South Africa's teenaged left-arm quick Kwena Maphaka dismissed Marsh and Cameron Green (nine) in the same over to turn the match on its head. Rabada also produced a two-wicket over, dismissing Tim David and Hardie but Maxwell stayed calm to guide Australia home. ‘Feel they can rob with impunity': UK police warn of brazen shoplifters as cases top 500,000
LONDON, Aug 16 — Some shoplifters 'feel they can rob shops with impunity', a British policing chief has said, reported PA Media/dpa. Katy Bourne, the national lead for shoplifting at the Association of Police and Crime Commissioners, said more robust police interventions and 'meaningful criminal justice measures' are needed to prevent reoffending. Shoplifting hit a record high in 2024, with the number of offences surpassing 500,000 for the first time, up 20 per cent from 2023. Writing in the Telegraph on Saturday, the police and crime commissioner for Sussex said: 'What on Earth has happened to our high streets and our city centres? Why do some people feel they can rob shops with impunity and abuse and assault staff without any fear of retribution?' There must be rehabilitation for some offenders as well as 'significant alternatives to our overcrowded prisons', she said. Sussex will see 'the first electronic tagging scheme for persistent shoplifters', Bourne said. The force will work with the courts on how to issue the tags and with industries to see how they can be monitored. The policing chief also criticised the 'purist application of data protection law' advising shopkeepers not to share images of suspected offenders. She said she is pleased that forces including Sussex Police will roll out live facial recognition cameras in specially adapted police vans. It was reported that officers spoke to a shopkeeper in Wrexham after he posted a sign referring to 'scumbag shoplifters'. North Wales Police said it did not appear he had committed any offence. Bourne said it appeared to be an example of 'warranted officers of the law policing the potential for hurt feelings'. She asked: 'How have we got to the point where police forces are more worried about upsetting career criminals than catching them?' Jon Cummins, Assistant Chief Constable from Avon and Somerset Police, told BBC Radio 4's 'Today' programme that wider societal issues including poverty, the cost-of-living crisis and addiction are contributing to the shoplifting spike. He said on Saturday: 'If they see somebody shoplifting, my advice to them is they must call us ... not to intervene. 'We clearly want to be attending and will be attending reports.' Bourne also cautioned against members of the public attempting to apprehend shoplifters. They may be armed and people 'run the risk' of committing assault, unlawful restraint or wrongful arrest. Earlier this week, supermarket chain Iceland said it would offer customers a £1 (US$1.35) reward if they spot shoplifters in the act. LONDON, Aug 16 — Mikel Arteta has challenged Arsenal to keep digging for gold as they prepare to start their latest bid for a first Premier League title since 2004 against revamped Manchester United tomorrow. Arteta's side have finished as Premier League runners-up for the last three seasons, sparking criticism of their failure to get over the line in the title race. Arsenal blew significant leads when Manchester City pipped them to the trophy in 2023 and 2024 before Liverpool left the injury-plagued north Londoners trailing in their wake last season. Arsenal's title frustrations are mounting, with fans questioning whether Arteta is the right man to end their drought after winning only the 2020 FA Cup since he took charge in December 2019. Amorim's team finished a dismal 15th in the top-flight and squandered a chance to qualify for the Champions League with a toothless 1-0 defeat against fellow underachievers Tottenham in the Europa League final. The pressure is on Amorim, who replaced the sacked Erik Ten Hag in November, to deliver major improvements in his second season. Amorim knows Sesko will be key to that target and he believes the 22-year-old Slovenian is ready to rise to the challenge.
