'Sesame Street' stars Elmo and Abby Cadabby sing and host in their Grand Ole Opry debut

'Sesame Street' stars Elmo and Abby Cadabby sing and host in their Grand Ole Opry debut

Independent4 hours ago
For a 3 1/2-year-old, Elmo sure has sung a lot on "Sesame Street" with some of the best musicians in the world.
But it wasn't until Thursday that the friendly red monster made his Grand Ole Opry debut, a country music rite of passage. The squeaky voiced singer's roots in the genre actually run pretty deep.
Elmo helped ring in the Grand Ole Opry's 100th anniversary this year by co-hosting with his 'Sesame Street' pal Abby Cadabby. Elmo, in a little blue cowboy hat and matching shirt, teamed up for a duet alongside Lauren Alaina, while Abby Cadabby sang with Tayla Lynn, the daughter of Loretta Lynn, the late country star who had visited "Sesame Street" herself.
'We sing all the time on 'Sesame Street,' but um, well, being able to sing in the home of country music is amazing!' Abby Cadabby told The Associated Press prior to their performance.
The puppet pair shared the spotlight in Music City during a stop on the "Sesame Street" crew's Road Trip Across America this summer and fall, when the characters that kids have watched on TV for decades are heading to events such as professional baseball games, state fairs and corn mazes. Cookie Monster even served as the grand marshal at the NASCAR Brickyard 400 in Indiana, making a cookie crumb mess, as expected.
Throughout the years, the "Sesame Street" gang has played and sung songs with some of country music's brightest stars, including Garth Brooks, Lee Ann Womack, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill, Thomas Rhett, Kane Brown, Mickey Guyton, Kacey Musgraves and more. Chris Stapleton stopped by Sesame Street in late July.
Johnny Cash made multiple appearances. He won over Oscar the Grouch with his song, 'Nasty Dan,' about a mean guy who never laughed and was rumored to have never taken a bath. 'Wow, I'd like him,' Oscar the Grouch mused from his trash can.
Loretta Lynn, meanwhile, joined for a math lesson with the Count on the song, 'Count on Me.'
In their interview with AP, Elmo and Abby Cadabby said the Count always talks about Loretta Lynn. Elmo said Stapleton's song about the power of music was really great.
'Elmo got to wear his hat,' Elmo said of Stapleton. "It was a little big for Elmo, but that's OK. A really good time."
Both of them were also dreaming big about singing with Dolly Parton.
'Elmo would love to do a duet with Miss Dolly Parton,' Elmo said. 'Maybe we could do 'Jolene' together. Come on Dolly! Call Elmo!'
'Yeah! Or 'Love is Like a Butterfly!'' Abby Cadabby added.
'Call us! We're available!' Elmo said.
'Sesame Street'debuted in 1969, and has helped generations of children learn, grow and be kind with characters like Bert, Ernie and Grover. Elmo wasn't officially Elmo, though, until 1980 in the 11th season. Before that, he was more of an extra used in some segments. He turns 3 1/2 years old on his birthday every February 3.
Abby Cadabby is a 4-year-old fairy-in-training, and the Fairy Godmother's daughter. She came to Sesame Street in 2006.
They also tossed out some ideas for new country songs. Elmo said he might write one about Rocco, the pet rock from Sesame Street. Abby Cadabby's idea was a little more complicated.
'A guitar-playing pickle picking in a pickle patch with a penguin eating pizza. Woo!' she said. 'Maybe I'll just sing about my friend Big Bird.'
Elmo has also had play dates with his cousin Elmer, who spoke with a little twang, wore a bright green cowboy hat and played a guitar to lead them in the 'Rootin' Tootin' Hootin' Hollerin' Country Jamboree.'
'Elmo loves country music, too,' Elmo said. 'Elmo loves the fiddle. Elmo loves to hear the fiddle. And Elmo loves to say fiddle.'

Anne Hathaway films dramatic scenes for The Devil Wears Prada 2 with new co-star Kenneth Branagh as he's seen on set for the first time in NYC

was spotted filming for the first time with new co-star Kenneth Branagh on The Devil Wears Prada 2 set in New York on Thursday. The actress, 42, who returns as Andy Sachs in the much-anticipated sequel, looked effortlessly stylish for the dramatic outdoor shoot. Anne wore a chic black top and high-waisted jeans which were layered with an oversized raincoat and accessorised with a leather handbag. Her character appeared to plead with Kenneth's character at the doorway of his swanky townhouse before he angrily turned her away. The BAFTA winner, 64, who has joined the cast the husband of Meryl Streep 's vicious fashion magazine editor Miranda Priestley, wore a navy polo shirt with his hair neatly styled. It came just hours after fellow co-star Emily Blunt debuted a new hairdo on set, totally unrecognisable from the film's 2002 original. The original novel was a roman à clef by the real Anna's former assistant Lauren Weisberger, with Emily playing magazine editor Miranda's chic, perpetually harried senior assistant Emily Charlton, who hisses that she is 'one stomach flu away from my goal weight.' Viewers of the original movie will remember Emily's trademark copper red locks, which elegantly framed her perpetually severe expression. For the sequel, however, Emily is swapping out her previous hair colour for a head-turning ash blonde do that she debuted on set. She was previously spotted on the set of the new movie with the same hair color and same style she had sported in the 2006 original. Evidently, however, her character will undergo a makeover during the course of the sequel, resulting in the new look she unveiled this week. The scene she was filming involved a restaurant meeting with Anne, who could be glimpsed sitting with her at an elegant table near the window. Emily's fashion-forward outfit included a trendily torn, scarlet and black striped top with 'NY' splashed across the front, perfectly fitted to her enviably lithe frame. She pulled a high-waisted black skirt over a set of matching shorts, which were cut revealingly enough to show off her vertiginous legs. The Oppenheimer actress accessorised with a chain mail tie, bringing the look together with towering platform heels and sunglasses. Emily sharpened her unmistakable screen siren features with makeup, including a slick of blood-red lipstick that complemented her top. When she was spotted emerging from her trailer at another point during the workday, the skirt-shorts combo was swapped out for crimson slacks. A stylish jacket that matched the slacks was slung over one of Emily's shoulders, and she augmented the outfit with a handbag and a camel-toned baseball cap. During the sweltering New York August day, a member of the crew could be seen walking alongside Emily holding an umbrella over her to ward off the rays. When the first film came out, Emily's character was rumored to be inspired by former Vogue writer Victoria 'Plum' Sykes, who herself has strenuously denied as much. A number of boldface names from the first movie have returned for the sequel, including not only Meryl, Anne and Emily but also Stanley Tucci. Stanley was a scene-stealing presence in the first film as Runway magazine's waspish art director Nigel Kipling, who announces Miranda's arrival at the office by warning his colleagues: 'All right, everyone, gird your loins!' David Frankel and Aline Brosh McKenna, the director and writer respectively of the original movie, have been enlisted for the same jobs on the sequel. Although Lauren Weisberger wrote a sequel to her novel called Revenge Wears Prada, the reported plot of the second film is different from that of the second book. In the upcoming movie, Miranda is said to be attempting to steer Runway through a new media landscape as her old world of print magazines slides into increasing irrelevance in the digital age, according to Variety. She is bent on making a deal with a luxury ad firm, only to hit a snag in the shape of Emily, who is now an executive at the company. When the book The Devil Wears Prada was published in 2003, it spent six months on the New York Times bestseller list and set off a blizzard of gossip that Lauren was writing about her former boss, who had employed her for less than a year.

Man United outcast Jadon Sancho all but confirms romance with American rapper Saweetie by inking her name on his neck - and removing 'her only' tattoo for former flame

Manchester United outcast Jadon Sancho has all but confirmed his relationship with American rapper Saweetie by inking her name on his skin. The 25-year-old was pictured alongside the Billboard star at the California-based Apollo Tattoo and Piercing Studio. Images from the shop's Instagram account also showed that the England star had added the word Qiava - Saweetie's middle name - to his neck behind his left ear. Sancho also had a previous tattoo on his hand which read 'her only' covered up with a colourful flower arrangement. It is not clear who that former flame was. The winger fuelled romance rumours in May when it was reported that Saweetie, real name Diamonté Quiava Valentin Harper, had pride of place as his phone's lock screen photograph. Sancho was celebrating Chelsea 's Europa Conference League final win on Wednesday night and held his phone aloft as he made merry with Trevoh Chalobah. Eagle-eyed fans spotted the picture of Saweetie, 32, on his phone and the speculation about his love life has been rife ever since. Adding fuel to the fire is the fact that the duo shared a hug at Stamford Bridge earlier this season. The pair have been rumoured to be dating for a few months after it was revealed that the rapper was Sancho's lock screen photo Sancho's latest body art comes as he inches closer to a departure from the Red Devils amid interest from Serie A side Roma. As first reported in Daily Mail's Transfer Confidential column on Tuesday , the Italians are the latest to discuss a potential loan and option to buy for the England international but United only want a permanent sale for the 25-year-old. Sancho has been frozen out at United and isn't part of Ruben Amorim 's plans at Old Trafford. Roma have made an attempt to sign the winger on a season-long loan as they look to secure a deal before the closure of the transfer window. Given Sancho's wages of £250,000-a-week, United would prefer a sale for a fee of between £20million and £25million. Juventus and his former club Borussia Dortmund have also been linked with Sancho this summer. Sancho spent last season on loan at Chelsea , with whom he won the Conference League. Sancho previously had a loan spell back at Dortmund. Sancho signed for United from Dortmund in 2021 for £73million. He has one year remaining on his contract although United have the option to extend it by a further year. During his time at United Sancho has made 83 appearances, while he has scored 12 goals and provided six assists.

Iris Law puts on a racy display in a sheer chiffon mini-dress exposing sexy lingerie as she strolls through New York City

Iris Law put on a racy display in a sheer chiffon mini-dress exposing sexy lingerie as she strolled through New York City. The model and actress, 23, who is the daughter of Jude Law and Sadie Frost, took to Instagram on Thursday to share that she had headed to the Big Apple. Stepping out on West 14th Street for the day, Iris posed for an array of snaps surrounded by scaffolding. She looked sensational in a green floral off-the-shoulder mini-dress, which was completely see-through. The dress's fabric made Iris's racy white sheer lingerie set completely visible and she paired the look with cream mules. Iris captioned the snaps: 'Sit next to meee.' It comes days after Iris sent temperatures soaring on Sunday during a sun-soaked holiday to Jamaica, showing off her toned frame in a string of barely-there bikinis. Iris enjoyed some downtime in Jamaica as she posed effortlessly in a brown triangle string bikini top that she paired with pink shorts. She later slipped into a gorgeous brown patterned two piece, laughing and joking with her friends as they made their way around a cliff edge. In another snap, Iris switched to a multi coloured, sequin bikini top and bottoms as she swung upside down from a tree, dipping her hands into the sandy beach waters. She also showed off her tree climbing skills, as another pictured showed her confidently half way up a branch and swinging from mid air.. A fourth pictured showed the model striking another sultry pose for the camera, this time in a strapless blue bandeau top, offering a glimpse of her ample assets. She paired the look with some tiny striped hot pants and wore a patterned bandana plus an array of jewellery to up the style stakes. In another eye-catching snap, the beauty posed with a pal in a vibrant yellow two-piece, as she beamed for the camera as she sat on a ledge by a lake. The dress's fabric made Iris's racy white sheer lingerie set completely visible and she paired the look with cream mules Taking a well-earned break from her hectic schedule, Iris also lounged on a red boat in a lilac crochet bikini, letting the wind whip through her hair as she stretched out against the backrest. The rising star was also seen enjoying a quiet moment over tea, dressed in a pair of high-cut shorts emblazoned with the word 'Dream' and a matching crop top. But it wasn't all sun, sea and sunbathing as Iris proved she's just as committed to fitness as she is to fashion, joining a group for an intense outdoor workout. Dressed in a sky-blue bikini, she showed off her enviable figure while powering through floor exercises with a caption that read: 'Grind never stops' followed by a sweat emoji and flexed arm. Iris recently spoke out to clarify her relationship with DJ Tommy Gold after the two sparked romance rumours during a Notting Hill outing last month. The model was seen with the London-based DJ, who bears a striking resemblance to her ex Trent Alexander-Arnold. The pair were seen browsing stalls at the famous Portobello Road Market, where they paused to pick up some flowers in the seemingly romantic setting. However, Iris addressed the speculation and insisted that Tommy is her 'bestie', taking to Instagram last month to clarify their relationship.
