HR&CE Department was started to protect temples, says Minister Sekarbabu
Minister for Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments P.K. Sekarbabu on Monday said the HR&CE department was started to protect temples and devotees during the British rule. They were siphoning off the income and properties of the temples. 'We plan to bring out a book detailing the story of the department,' he said.
Speaking to presspersons after inspecting work to build additional classrooms at the Arulmigu Ekambaranthan Matric HSS, he said Chief Minister M. K. Stalin will inaugurate this building and another one at Choolaimedu. Mr. Sekarbabu said that Mr. Stalin has told them not to mix religion and politics.
On the Muruga devotee conference held by Hindu Munnani in Madurai on Sunday, he said it was like a 'one-day koothu'. The people of the State, he believed were very much with the ruling DMK as, according to him, they knew it was taking good care of temples. In the last four years the DMK government had performed kumbabhishekams of 117 temples dedicated to Lord Muruga at a cost of Rs. 1068 crore, he said.

He is expected to demand restoration of Karnataka's share in central taxes to 4.1%, as recommended by the 14th Finance Commission. Under the 15th Finance Commission, the state's share was reduced to 3.6%, a move Siddaramaiah's team claims has disadvantaged the state. He is also likely to request compensation for unmet assurances under previous commissions and will urge the Centre ensure Karnataka is treated fairly by the 16th Finance Commission, which will be in force from April 1, 2026, to March 31, 2031. While there is no official confirmation, sources suggest that Siddaramaiah has also requested an appointment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Simplify processes, speed up refunds, Finance minister Sitharaman tells tax officials
NEW DELHI: Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday asked top direct tax officials to make the processes simpler, transparent, and taxpayer-friendly, while seeking to speed up cases of disputed tax demand. During a meeting with principal chief commissioners of income tax, the minister called for a "structured, process-driven approach to compliance" focusing on greater ease for taxpayers and improved voluntary compliance, an official statement said. A key thrust of FM's discussions, which sets the agenda for the financial year, was a focus on refunds and grievance redressal, in addition to the disposal of cases locked up in disputes. While direct tax refunds in the fiscal year up to June 19 shot up 58%, the statement said Rs 23,376 crore refunds were issued on account of "Order Giving Effects", while another Rs 10,496 crore were on account of rectifications made during the financial year. While nearly 5.8 lakh appeals are pending, over 2.2 lakh appeals are sought to be completed by March, dealing with over Rs 10 lakh crore of disputed demand. J&K House panel asks for documents to probe Jal Jeevan Mission, told by dept: Need 1.3 crore pages
A probe into alleged irregularities in the Jal Jeevan Mission in Jammu and Kashmir has run into paperwork — quite literally. In March, following a debate during the Budget session, the J&K Assembly set up a House Committee to probe claims of irregularities. In response to the committee's request for documents, the Jal Shakti Department is learnt to have written that, based on an average of 200 to 250 pages per scheme — there are 3,253 schemes under the Mission — each set would run into roughly 7.3 lakh pages. Since the committee has sought 18 sets for the members and allied staff, the department has written that this would require over 1.30 crore pages. The department has sought an extension to submit the documents, stating that 'this exercise will not even need more time for compilation, but will also require huge resources for printing/photocopying the required number of sets.' Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather had announced the constitution of the House Committee to 'allay the apprehensions' of both the Treasury and Opposition benches after the March debate on the implementation of JJM. It held its first meeting on May 22. The chairman of the committee, Hasnain Masoodi of the National Conference, said the next meeting is scheduled for Friday, June 27. 'We have sought documents on JJM. However, they have sought some time because they said that the documentation is voluminous. I am hoping that by Friday, they will be able to table it,' Masoodi told The Indian Express. The Jal Jeevan Mission was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 15, 2019, to provide each rural household with a functional household tap connection. The J&K House Committee is probing alleged irregularities in this scheme since its implementation in that year. The stated expenditure under the scheme till date in the UT is over Rs 7,000 crore. The committee has requested the department for data regarding the year-wise financial allocation received from the relevant ministry and its utilisation, as well as copies of all administrative and technical sanctions related to JJM works, detailed project reports, tender notices, bid documents, technical and evaluation reports, among other documents.
