Immature asking resignation of leaders: Maharashtra Minister slams Opposition over Air India crash remarks
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], June 14 (ANI): Maharashtra Minister Girish Mahajan has reacted strongly to the tragic Air India plane crash near Ahmedabad, calling it a heartbreaking incident and slamming the opposition leaders for demanding 'resignations'.
Speaking to ANI, Minister Mahajan said, 'This is a tragic incident... It is very immature of those (opposition) who are commenting on this, asking resignation of the leaders... They do not know anything apart from politics...'
He added that this is not the time for politics but a moment to support rescue efforts and stand by the victims and their families.
Meanwhile, Saligram J Murlidhar, former Deputy Director of the National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL), called the Ahmedabad crash one of the most unfortunate aviation disasters in recent Indian history. He said fuel contamination could be a major reason behind the incident.
Speaking to ANI, Murlidhar said, 'The Ahmedabad plane crash was one of the most unfortunate incidents in Indian recent history. The aircraft is a Boeing Dreamliner. It is one of the most ultramodern aircraft with all the safety precautions, navigation, and it is almost foolproof.'
He said the aircraft was carrying over 35 tons of fuel, and its failure to gain altitude suggested a major technical issue.
Authorities are currently searching for the Flight Data Recorder (FDR) and the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) to understand what happened in the final moments of the flight.
On Thursday, the Al-171 Boeing Dreamliner 787-8 aeroplane bound for London's Gatwick had crashed shortly after it took off from the Ahmedabad International Airport.
The airlines said only one out of the 242 people on board the aircraft survived the crash.
The aircraft was piloted by Captain Sumeet Sabharwal, a Line Training Captain with 8,200 hours of flying experience, assisted by First Officer Clive Kundar, who had logged 1,100 flying hours.
As per Air Traffic Control (ATC), the aircraft departed from Ahmedabad at 1339 IST (0809 UTC) from runway 23. It made a Mayday call to ATC, but thereafter, the aircraft did not respond to the calls.
Shortly after take-off, the aircraft crashed outside the airport boundary. Eyewitnesses reported thick black smoke rising from the crash site.
According to Air India, the passengers included 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, seven Portuguese nationals, and one Canadian national. (ANI)

Shamli: Four teenagers drowned after being swept away while bathing in Sharda river near Devraghat in Sitapur district, police said on Saturday. Avinash, Utkarsh, and Devansh Singh, all 14, and Rahul Kumar, 13, all residents of Hasanpur Katauli village in Lakhimpur Kheri district, were bathing in the river near Akbarpur village under Tambour police station around noon on Friday. The boys waded into deep waters and were caught in a strong current. Residents attempted to rescue the boys and alerted the police. Tambour SHO Rakesh Singh said, "The victims' families were informed about the drownings on Friday, and we have not received any complaints from them. All four victims were from labourer families. Senior officials have instructed us to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. Further action will be taken accordingly." Plane crash: Ranjitha's kin awaits DNA test results
Kottayam: The Ahmedabad Civil Hospital authorities collected the DNA samples of Ranjitha Gopakumaran Nair's brother Ratheesh Nair and initiated the process to identify the body on Saturday. Ratheesh along with a relative arrived in Ahmedabad on Friday. Ratheesh told TOI that he will remain in Ahmedabad until the body is identified. He said he along with the relative will be staying in another relative's house until further information is available. "We have decided to stay back here until the mortal remains are handed over," Ratheesh said. He also thanked Air India for the support and the arrangements made by the authorities for the relatives of the victims in Ahmedabad. Meanwhile, Unnikrishnan, who accompanied Ratheesh, said that they were asked whether the funeral could be conducted in Ahmedabad or if they wanted to take the mortal remains to their native place. "We have told them that we want to take the mortal remains to our native place. They will show us the mortal remains only after the DNA test is completed," he said. Meanwhile, Pathanamthitta MP Anto Antony said that the minister of civil aviation spoke to Ranjitha's mother and brother over the phone on Friday night. Antony said that the central govt assured all support to the families of the victims. He also said that the Union minister told the family that he will be visiting them when he comes to Kerala next. Ranjitha, who was a nursing officer at the district hospital in Kozhencherry, was working abroad after taking leave from govt service. She came home for a short visit for self-attesting the documents needed for joining back the govt job. The plane crash happened while she was returning to the UK. Traditional fishing festival draws thousands at Periya Kanmai
