Madurai: The annual fishing festival at Cholappereri Kanmai, popularly known as Periya Kanmai, was celebrated in grand traditional style on Saturday near Thiruvadhavur in Melur taluk.
More than a thousand people from nearby villages and neighbouring districts, including Sivagangai and Dindigul, gathered for the event. The day began with rituals led by village elders, accompanied by the beat of traditional drums and fireworks. Following the ceremonial tossing of white feathers into the tank—a symbolic gesture allowing fishing to begin—participants of all ages waded into the water using traditional tools such as kacha, uttha, and baskets.
Local fish varieties such as kendai (carp) and catla, some weighing up to 10 kg, were caught. In keeping with tradition, the catch was not sold but shared, cooked, and eaten on-site, underscoring the spirit of unity and community.
"This festival is not just about fishing. It's about unity, faith in the rains, and agricultural prosperity," said a village elder. Locals believe that the festival invokes good rainfall and ensures a bountiful harvest.

However, concerns were raised over ecological changes. Jayaraj, a participant from Dindigul, warned about the growing presence of tank cleaner fish—an invasive species previously confined to the Vaigai. "These fish are spreading across tanks in Madurai and threatening native species. The fisheries department should intervene before it's too late," he said.

Girl struggles to breathe in crowded train while passengers mock her; video of incident goes viral

A disturbing video circulating on social media shows a young girl gasping for breath in an overcrowded train compartment as bystanders choose to laugh and film rather than help her. The incident has triggered widespread outrage and renewed debates on passenger safety during peak travel hours. In the clip, the visibly distressed girl struggles to open a window for fresh air and splashes water on her face to cope with the heat, while onlookers mock her plight and record the scene — drawing sharp criticism online for their apathy. "A girl was almost suffocated, stampeded into a train coach, and she was running out of breath. The crowd on the platform was laughing and mocking her. What do you call such behaviour?'', the caption of the video said that went viral on social media X. One user said, "As I say, Indians lack empathy and severely lack civilised behaviour. People's behaviour and understanding of emergencies and emergency care are extremely low in India. Emergency response theory and practice must be a part of the syllabus in schools in India. Otherwise degeneracy will increase." Another commented, "These people just stood there laughing and recording on their phones while a girl was gasping for breath, literally fighting to stay conscious? That's not just shameless, it's inhuman." A third said, "What is wrong with the people? And most of them are young educated men, sad to see this, lack of arrangements from the railway is equally responsible for this chaos, these kinds of situations lead to stampede."

Ahmedabad plane crash: US attorney, kin of victims join candlelight vigil

Ahmedabad, Aug 12 (PTI) Family members of Air India plane crash victims on Tuesday participated in a candlelight vigil at the site of the tragedy in Meghaninagar area of Ahmedabad to mark two months since the deadly aviation disaster. United States-based aviation attorney Mike Andrews, who is in Gujarat to meet the kin of the deceased, also participated, said his media coordinator, Kuldip Israni. 'Andrews and 20 to 25 family members of the air crash victims, including passengers and those killed on the ground, participated in the candlelight vigil in memory of the victims," said Israni. Andrews, on August 8, announced that at least 65 families from India and the United Kingdom, who lost their kin in the horrific tragedy on June 12, have hired US-based law firm Beasley Allen, with which he is associated as an aviation attorney. Andrews had told reporters in Vadodara that the families have an option of filing a product liability claim in a US court, depending on the findings of the ongoing investigation. On June 12, Air India's Boeing 787-8 aircraft en route to London Gatwick crashed into a medical hostel complex shortly after taking off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport and burst into flames, killing 241 out of 242 people onboard and 19 individuals on the ground, including four medical students. During the last week, Andrews met family members of several victims in Vadodara, Ahmedabad, Surat and neighbouring Diu.
