In Grueling Ranger Competition, Gender Proves No Obstacle
A female Army Ranger competed for the first time in one of the military's most grueling tests of physical fitness, besting many of her male counterparts and challenging assertions by the U.S. secretary of defense regarding women's abilities to perform at the highest levels.
First Lt. Gabrielle White and her teammate, Capt. Seth Deltenre, placed 14th out of 52 teams during the weekend's Best Ranger Competition, a three-day event in Georgia at which some of the Army's most elite soldiers compete in land navigation, marksmanship and an array of physically strenuous tasks.
Lieutenant White was the first woman to participate in the four decades that the event has been held. Her team's achievement — she and Captain Deltenre finished among the top competitors after 36 other pairs were eliminated — came less than a decade after women were first granted access to the Army's Ranger School, a rigorous monthslong course with a high rate of failure.
Some saw Lieutenant White's performance at the competition as a rejoinder, however unintended, to comments by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth questioning the abilities of women in the military.
'I saw a three-day public display of what we've been saying for 10 years,' said Kris Fuhr, a West Point graduate who was instrumental in integrating women into the Ranger School at Fort Benning in 2015.
Mr. Hegseth, a former National Guard infantryman and Fox News host, has spoken critically of the inclusion of women in combat roles.

The rape allegations against Zion Williamson are not affecting the Pelicans' plans for his future with the organization. While new executive vice president of basketball operations Joe Dumars said he had been 'advised not to venture into any of his legal issues' in an interview with The Times-Picayune, he made it clear the team intends to build around its former No. 1 overall pick. 'I've had really good conversations with Zion,' Dumars, the former Pistons title-winning executive, said Wednesday. 'We've had lunch. Dinner. Watched playoff games together. We've done it all. I've had some real, honest conversations with him. Some real direct and honest conversations. 'We're going to go forward with Zion. NBAE via Getty Images Williamson's standing with the franchise came into question following the bombshell rape allegations made against him in a lawsuit filed last week by woman claiming to be his ex-girlfriend. The woman, identified in the lawsuit as Jane Doe, alleges the forward raped her twice in 2020 and 'continued to abuse, rape, assault and batter plaintiff' until their relationship ended in 2023. On Sept. 23, 2020, the woman alleges Williamson 'pinned Plaintiff down on the bed with her hands behind her back and raped her' after she refused to have sex with him. Williamson is also alleged to have called her 'stuck up' and a 'b—h.' Roughly one month later on Oct. 10, amid a discussion about Doe possibly visiting a friend, Williamson is alleged to have 'picked her up, threw her down to the ground, and pinned her shoulders down so she could not move,' and then 'violently raped Plaintiff in multiple ways.' 4 The Pelicans recently hired Joe Dumars as their executive VP of basketball operations. AP The woman is seeking between $18 million to $50 million, according to ESPN. Williamson denied the allegations, and his legal counsel said they planned to file counterclaims and 'seek significant damages for this defamatory lawsuit.' 'We take these allegations with the utmost seriousness, and we unequivocally deny them. The allegations contained in the complaint are categorically false and reckless,' Williamson's legal counsel told The Post in late May. 'This is the plaintiff's third set of attorneys. This appears to be an attempt to exploit a professional athlete driven by a financial motive rather than any legitimate grievance.' 4 Williamson represented the Pelicans at the NBA Draft Lottery. NBAE via Getty Images While Dumars did not comment on the lawsuit, Pelicans owner Gayle Benson addressed the topic Tuesday but did not offer much. 'You know, lawsuits are lawsuits,' Benson said, according to The Times-Picayune. 'You really can't … You don't know. I mean people can sue you for anything. There's no reason you can be innocent or not. It's just something that people do, unfortunately.' Before this lawsuit emerged, the Pelicans reportedly had been open to moving anyone on the roster in their attempt to build a winner after missing the playoffs for the fourth time in Williamson's six seasons. 4 Zion Williamson missed 52 games last season. Getty Images Dumars, though, said that sending Williamson to the NBA Draft Lottery in May — before the lawsuit's unveiling — showed the team's commitment to him. The Pelicans will pick seventh in the upcoming draft. 'I sent him to the lottery for a reason,' Dumars told the publication. 'I want him to start focusing on the responsibilities of being the best player here and the focal point. There are some responsibilities that come with that. Go represent your organization.' Any revival in New Orleans will need Williamson to be healthy and productive, the former having been a major issue since he landed with the franchise after starring at Duke. Though Williamson has averaged 24.7 points and 6.6 rebounds in his career, he's appeared in 60 or more games just twice in six seasons. Williamson, 24, played in just 30 games this past season and missed the entire 2021-22 season due to a foot injury. He's appeared in just 214 games. 'We've had some real direct conversations with him about that,' Dumars said, per the outlet. 'Expectations. Accountability. That's our plan going forward with Zion.'

The Vero Beach (Vero Beach, FL) Class of 2026 product just wrapped up a multi-day visit to South Bend Tuesday. The 6-foot-1.5, 155-pound four-star athlete/wide receiver, who committed to the Seminoles in December 2023, is the 30th-ranked prospect in the state of Florida, per the 247Sports Composite Rankings. He has seen a surge of interest from major programs since the start of the year, including an offer from Notre Dame. As a freshman, White started every game at cornerback and also saw some time at quarterback and receiver. As a sophomore and junior, he started on both sides of the ball, seeing time at quarterback, running back and multiple receiver spots. But it wasn't until this spring that he has been locked in solely at receiver. White also runs track, where he posted a 22.57 mark in the 200. He, of course, will need to add size to his frame, but his speed and raw athleticism clearly stand out. Marcus Freeman and his staff currently have 16 commitments for the Class of 2026, giving the Fighting Irish the No. 2 haul in the country according to 247Sports Team Composite Rankings. White would be a dynamic piece to add to the class. Warriors looking at Boston Celtics guard as trade option (report)
The Celtics offseason of uncertainty has begun after a stunning second round exit to the Knicks. Brad Stevens has a litany of decisions to make, facing a financial crunch while dealing with the aftermath of Jayson Tatum suffering a torn Achilles that will sideline him for at least the majority of the 2025-26 season. Just how the Celtics plan to retool around Tatum for next season and beyond is an open question, but other NBA teams are anticipating Boston being active in the trade market. One team that will be focused with great urgency on the present will be an aging Golden State Warriors squad that dealt for Jimmy Butler last season. Advertisement In an conversation on the Zach Lowe Show, former Warriors beat reporter Logan Murdock of the Ringer says he believes that the Warriors are looking at Celtics starting guard Derrick White as a trade target for them this offseason. 'Another guy for the Warriors to look at going forward is Derrick White,' Murdock told Lowe. 'I think that's something the Warriors are looking at right now. 'That's somebody who can play defense, can settle everyone down especially when you have a young group like that' Lowe acknowledged that a trade of White would be one of the several items that the Celtics could be considering this offseason. Advertisement 'I've talked about how depressing trading Derrick White would be for Boston and the sort of a dilemma they face in terms of how much of a reset do we really want to have and who we want to be back here when Tatum comes back?' Lowe said. 'Who has trade value in the interim and where Derrick White fits in that conversation?' White is coming off his best season in Boston during the 2024-25 season and is under contract for the next four years (including a player option after his extension kicks in this summer). He will make an average of $31 million annually over those four seasons, making him a relative bargain for his two-way play. The Warriors, like any other playoff team, surely would love to deal for White. However, Golden State does not look like a team that has the necessary trade assets to even make Boston considering parting ways with the 30-year-old guard. The movable parts of the Warriors' roster simply shouldn't have much value to a team like Boston. Brandin Podziemski is an intriguing young guard that's just 22 but is sharp downgrade from White from a defensive standpoint. Moses Moody has shown promise also struggled to find a consistent role in his four years in Golden State and isn't exactly cheap at $11 million per year. The Warriors do own all their first round pick from 2026-2029 but their odds of bottoming out at non existent as long as Stephen Curry is still active. Advertisement Would a package of Podziemski, Moody and first round trade capital be enough for the Celtics to move on from White? It's hard to envision them making that type of move without getting more of a blue chip prospect or high upside draft capital.
