TN fishers urge state govt to seek compensation from MSC Elsa 3 after cargo spill from sunken vessel
Kurumpanai C Berlin, a fishermen activist and writer, told TNIE that the cargo spill affected fishermen from several TN districts, including Kanniyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi and Ramanathapuram. "The cargo spill will affect the fishermen for years to come," he said, adding that the state should follow the actions taken by the Kerala government and get compensation for the affected fishermen.
International Fishermen Development Trust (INFIDET) president P Justin Antony said that on the days following the sinking of the Liberian-flagged vessel, several containers, hauling hazardous cargo and plastic pellets, washed ashore, triggering panic among the public, especially fishermen. "The Kerala government moved its high court seeking a compensation of Rs 9,531 crore for the losses suffered, including the adverse effect on the livelihood of its fishermen," he said, urging the TN government to do the same.

Agency: PTI Last Updated: Lucknow, Jul 27 (PTI) A superintendent engineer (SE) of Purvanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam has been suspended for allegedly misbehaving with a consumer, officials said on Sunday. Sharing the suspension order of SE Prashant Singh on X, Uttar Pradesh Energy and Urban Development Minister A K Sharma said, 'Upbhogta Devo Bhav (consumer is god)!" 'The SE of Basti, Prashant Singh, has been suspended with immediate effect for his insensitivity and indecent behaviour towards the complaint of electricity consumers. 'All other electricity officers and employees have been directed for effective and quick solution of consumer problems. Everyone should be ready for public service," Sharma said. The suspension order was issued on Saturday by Chief Engineer (administration) Arvind Nayak on behalf of the managing director of Purvanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam (PVVN). It said that Bharat Pandey, a resident of Mudaghat in Basti district, lodged a complaint with Singh over phone on July 18 about non-supply of electricity. The suspension order said Singh behaved 'indecently" with the complainant despite being in a responsible position, which fell under the category of 'misconduct". Singh will remain attached to the office of the MD, PVVN, Varanasi, during his suspension period, the order said. Accountability will be fixed from the top management of the power corporation to the field-level officials, he said. Arbitrary behaviour of any staff member hindering development will be strongly dealt with, the minister said in the statement. 'Despite substantial investments in power infrastructure – over Rs 26,000 crore in the last three years – the image of the government and the department is being damaged by the carelessness of a few employees. 'In view of the state's development needs and the rights of the consumers, such irresponsibility will no longer be accepted," Sharma said. CM meets villagers, tells them what Pb govt is doing for them
Ludhiana: Chief minister Bhagwant Singh Mann Sunday interacted with people living in villages under the shade of trees and sought their suggestions regarding the carving out of Rangla Punjab. He also apprised them of key initiatives of his govt. Addressing people at Samrala and Libra, the CM said at the time he assumed office, only 21% of canal water was being used for irrigation. Today it has risen to 63%. He said due to the concerted efforts of the Punjab govt, for the first time, the water of canals and rivers has reached the villages at the tail end of the state. His govt successfully safeguarded Punjab's water resources from being diverted to other states, he added. The CM told the farmers that to avoid complications in selling paddy due to high moisture content in Oct, the state govt has advanced the paddy cultivation season from June 1. For this, he said zone-wise cultivation of the paddy crop has been ensured in the state along with necessary planning and arrangements. He called up the Union food minister and urged him to begin paddy procurement from Sept 15. The CM said he wants to hand over tiffins to the youth by giving them employment so that they shun syringes and the drug menace. Stating that unemployment is the root cause of social problems, he said the govt has given 55,000 youth jobs so far. Mann said the previous govts "never bothered" about making any effort to save the groundwater, and the farmers at the tail ends, on this land of five rivers, never got water. The CM said after assuming charge, the AAP govt revived 15,947 water courses in the state, due to which water has reached the tail ends even in the remotest villages. Likewise, he said his govt has provided free power to households from the month of July. He said for the first time, the state govt purchased a power plant from a private firm to make the state surplus in power production.
