Flying Airbus grab their second trophy of the campaign

Leader Live27-04-2025

The Wingmakers followed up their Cymru North Cup final triumph over Bangor 1876 to defeat Cymru South Cup winners Trefelin 3-2 and lift the national Cymru Cup.
It's a case of job done for Airbus boss Mark Allen, who also has his sights set on another piece of silverware before the hectic closing spell to the season concludes.
On Tuesday, the Wingmakers will take on Ardal League Corwen in the semi-finals of the North East Wales FA Challenge Cup.
Ahead of Saturday's final, Allen told the Cymru Leagues website: 'Like I've said all season, we set ourselves certain targets at the start of the year and one of them was silverware.
'It's really important for us to finish on a high, we've got the regional one but the national one is significantly better so we're looking forward to the game on Saturday and we want to win.'
Trefelin were let off the hook when George Peers prodded over from close range after Tyler McManus' hopeful effort rebounded off the crossbar.
But Peers would put Airbus in the lead when he latched on to Danny Warren's chipped pass before drilling the ball past Alex Pennock.
Airbus started the second half sharply and Jordan Evans struck a well-placed free-kick through a weak Trefelin wall and into the bottom corner.
Lively Trefelin forward Roan Piper threw his side a lifeline, but a close-range finish from Nathan Williams restored Airbus' two-goal cushion.
With seven minutes remaining, Trefelin defiantly tested Airbus's nerves after earning a penalty that Callum Saunders thumped into the bottom corner. However, Allen's men held firm to secure part two of what they hope will be a trophy treble.
What a day it turned out to be for Ryan Reynolds!
The co-chairman was at the Racecourse to see Wrexham secure a third successive promotion, while his namesake made sure Cardiff Met made it through in the Cymru Premier League play-offs.
In the third minute of stoppage time, Reynolds grabbed the dramatic goal as Met defeated Bala Town 1-0.
It was the Louis Lloyd show as Caernarfon Town recovered from an early deficit to beat Barry Town United.
Eliot Richards had Barry in front after eight minutes, however Lloyd grabbed four goals as the Canaries turned things around to record a 5-2 win. Adam Davies netted the other for Caernarfon, as Kayne McLaggon grabbed a late United consolation.

The Derby could be delayed as yellow warning issued amid 'major threat'

Epsom Downs officials have put together a contingency plan after the Met Office issued a Yellow weather warning for the Surrey area during Saturday Epsom have a contingency plan in place to delay The Derby - if forecast thunder and lightning hit Epsom this afternoon. The Met Office issued a yellow weather warning on Friday for thunderstorms across parts of central and southern England and Wales. And Jim Allen, overseeing his first Derby as Epsom's general manager, will put the time of the feature race back if the worst of the forecast materialises. ITV 's Derby broadcast is due off air at 4.15pm - 45 minutes after the Derby's scheduled 'off' time - and Allen said: 'We obviously have delayment and abandonment procedures that we will put into place, should we need them. ‌ 'Let's say we have a lightning storm at the time of the Derby - we've got 45 minutes between that and the next race, and we're still live on ITV. If we had a storm, I'm sure we could find time to fit the race in, live on air. ‌ 'We're so high up here that it often blows through quite quickly - I can't imagine that we will have a lightning storm for 45 minutes.' The Met Office Yellow National Severe Weather Warning came into effect on Friday morning and predicted more persistent rain and showers to arrive into the southwest, spreading eastwards overnight and becoming windy in the southwest by dawn. Saturday looks to be a very showery day, with frequent heavy showers, some thundery with gusty winds and hail. Met Office Chief Meteorologist Dan Suri said: 'Frequent heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected for much of Saturday, before they fade from the west during the mid-to-late afternoon. 'It's possible that 10-15mm of rain could fall in less than an hour, while some places could see 30-40mm of rain over several hours from successive showers and thunderstorms. Frequent lightning, hail, and strong, gusty winds are also possible. 'A yellow warning for thunderstorms has been issued and covers parts of central and southern England and Wales. While brisk winds ensure that most places in the warning area will be hit by showers, not all places will see thunderstorms. In this case it's difficult to predict where exactly thunderstorms will hit because they are small and fast changing. 'One analogy we use to picture the complexity of this forecasting challenge is comparing it to boiling a pan of water and having to guess exactly where and when the bubbles will appear. We know some will, but only in certain places, and that is why thunderstorms are so hard to predict.'

Big players return and youth given chance

Craig Bellamy's side took four points from their opening two games against Kazakhstan and North Macedonia in March. Here, the PA news agency looks at the main talking points surrounding the Cardiff City Stadium clash. Flaming June Frustrated Wales players exchange words with Armenia goalkeeper Ognjen Cancarevic during their shock 4-2 home defeat to Armenia two summers ago (Adam Davy/PA) Summer fixtures have proved a major problem for Wales in recent years. Euro 2024 qualification hopes were seriously damaged by defeats to Armenia – then ranked 97th in the world – and Turkey two years ago, and manager Rob Page lost his job after an embarrassing goalless draw with Gibraltar and a 4-0 beating in Slovakia last June. Slipping up against Liechtenstein, who are 205th out of FIFA's 210 ranked nations, would top those disasters, and boss Bellamy will be keen to brush them aside ahead of Monday's challenging test with Belgium in Brussels. Big players are back Ethan Ampadu (centre) and Harry Wilson (left) are fit again to drive Wales' World Cup qualifying campaign (Nick Potts/PA) Ethan Ampadu and Harry Wilson, arguably Wales' two most important players, are available again after missing the March qualifiers through injury. Leeds captain Ampadu has not played for his country since September due to knee issues, with Bellamy saying Wales do not possess another player with the midfielder's 'number six profile'. Fulham forward Wilson has been on fire since Bellamy took charge, scoring four times in six games as Wales won promotion to the top tier of the Nations League last autumn. No Allen farewell Wales midfield great Joe Allen ended his distinguished playing career last month (David Davies/PA) Wales great Joe Allen has retired since the last international camp, calling time on a 77-cap career which saw the former Swansea, Liverpool and Stoke midfielder play at a World Cup and two European Championships. Allen had previously retired from international football in February 2023 before Bellamy persuaded him to return to the Wales fold last autumn. There had been suggestions Allen would prolong his career to make one final Wales appearance in Cardiff, but Bellamy paid tribute to the 35-year-old saying: 'Joe has been one of our greatest players. All I could do was just thank him for this period.' New kids on the block Cardiff teenager Ronan Kpakio has been thrust into the Wales senior spotlight (Nick Potts/PA) At a time when Desire Doue and Lamine Yamal have proved on the biggest stage that if you are good enough, you are old enough, Wales are nurturing their own young talent. Full-back Ronan Kpakio has been promoted from the Under-19 squad after just six appearances and one league start for Cardiff, while Leeds midfielder Charlie Crew, also 18, is included as well. Whether the pair receive game-time against Liechtenstein remains to be seen, but Bellamy is keen to fast-track high-potential youngsters for them to have experience of the senior environment. Payback chance on Liechtenstein trolls Hello! Shall we schedule a friendly match? — Liechtenstein_br (@liechtensteinbr) June 6, 2024 Wales were at a low point last summer after Gibraltar's part-timers held them to a 0-0 friendly draw in Portugal. But that did not stop the official Liechtenstein X account poking fun at the Dragons with a spot of trolling online. 'Hello! Shall we schedule a friendly match?' proclaimed a nation without a competitive victory since 2020. The World Cup draw ensured there was no need for that – and now Wales have the perfect chance for revenge.
