Ten man Kilmarnock throw away two goal lead in season opening draw with Livingston

Killie were 2-0 up at the break but the game turned on George Stanger's red card
Kilmarnock kicked-off the Premiership season by throwing away a two goal lead in a 2-2 home draw with newly promoted Livingston.

Two goals in the space of just three minutes shortly before the interval appeared to have the hosts in control, but the contest turned on George Stanger's red card midway through the second half.

Djenairo Daniels raced through to open the scoring on 39 minutes with a composed finish that had originally been ruled offside. David Watson doubled the tally moments later when Jerome Prior palmed a Jamie Brandon delivery into the path of the midfielder to roll home.

Livi looked for a way back into the contest, and were handed it by the home side. Stanger dragged Robbie Muirhead down inside the box with whistler Matthew McDermid awarding a penalty and sending off the defender following a VAR check. Muirhead promptly fired home from 12 yards out.
The visitors looked the most likely to find the next goal, and they duly did so four minutes from time as Scott Pittman swept home Lewis Smith's pass high into the net for the equaliser to mark a disappointing afternoon for Killie and boss Stuart Kettlewell in his first league game at the helm.
With vice-captain Robbie Deas suspended and centre-back an area lacking in depth for the hosts, skipper Brad Lyons was drafted in on the right-side of a back three while new boys Daniels and Marcus Dackers were given the nod as the attacking pair in the season opener.

Both sides looked to get on the front foot early, but chances were lacking. The hosts almost pounced on 11 minutes after stealing possession with Livi looking to play out from the back, but Watson's effort was blocked after being teed up by Dackers.
Max Stryjek was man of the match against his former side when the two teams faced off in the League Cup a fortnight ago and he had to be alert to prevent Livi going in front on 20 minutes as Adam Montgomery's fizzing strike from the edge of the box took a deflection in a congested penalty area. The Polish stopper re-adjusted and was able to get down low to claw the ball away before it rolled into the net.
The home side took total control of the contest thanks to a quick-fire double just before the break. Daniels timed his run perfectly to race in behind the defence and fire beyond Prior on 39 minutes before the keeper palmed out a Jamie Brandon ball across goal straight into the path of Watson who rolled home under pressure to double the advantage.

Livi looked to drag themselves back into the contest but Montgomery's header under pressure at the back post eight minutes after the restart was comfortably dealt with by Stryjek.
With Killie seemingly in control, they shot themselves in the foot midway through the half as, following a VAR check, Stanger was deemed to have dragged down Muirhead inside the box. That resulted in both a penalty and a red card with former Killie man Muirhead slotting home from the spot.
He was inches away from doubling his tally a few minutes later when the dead-ball specialist curled a 22-yard free-kick narrowly wide of the woodwork.
Livi sensed a change in momentum and went close once again to a leveller on 77 minutes as neat play down the left flank eventually led to Stryjek sticking out a foot to deny Montgomery as the full-back looked to beat him at the near post.
The keeper was beaten four minutes from time as Smith darted into the box before rolling the ball into the path of Pittman.
Both sides went searching for a dramatic late winner but none arrived as the honours were even in the top flight's curtain raiser.

Celtic dominance isn't just due to Rangers failings as ex Premier League star throws down gauntlet

Nigel Reo-Coker believes the Premiership's other 10 clubs are not pulling their weight Scotland's other 10 top-flight teams need to take the pressure off Rangers by shouldering more responsibility to try and halt Celtic's dominance in the Premiership. ‌ That's the view of former English Premier League captain Nigel Reo-Coker, who reckons that the rest of the league are not pulling their weight when it comes to facing the Hoops. ‌ Besides Steven Gerrard 's Premiership triumph with Gers in the 2020/21 season behind closed doors, the Hoops have won every title since 2011, with the last team outside of Glasgow's big two to lift the title coming with Sir Alex Ferguson's Aberdeen in 1985. ‌ And while the Dons caused a huge upset to lift the Scottish Cup for the first time in 35 years when they edged out Celtic on penalties back in May, Reo Coker - who starred for West Ham, Aston Villa and Bolton in England's top-flight - firmly believes that the other clubs that make up the Premiership should be making the league 'more competitive'. Speaking on CBS Sports Golazo, he said: "Common sense will tell you that Celtic should be the favourites, Brendan Rodgers is a very accomplished manager who knows what he is doing. "For the manager that he is, I expect Celtic to go and win the title again. "When you look at Rangers and talk about Russell Martin coming in as the new manager, he was very stubborn in his time at Southampton and didn't want to change his style of play. "It is going to take a while to implement the style of play he wants at Rangers. A great signing they have made is Mikey Moore, a young lad on loan from Tottenham. ‌ "I think it's going to be so beneficial to that young talented player to get that first team experience playing week-in, week-out. "We always talk about it being on Rangers to beat Celtic. But I think it's on all the teams in the Scottish Premiership to be more competitive. "You talk about the last time a different team that wasn't Celtic or Rangers to win the Scottish Premiership was Aberdeen under Sir Alex Ferguson. ‌ "Since then, there has been 40 title winners and it's been shared between Celtic and Rangers. I think the bigger conversation is a lot more competitiveness from other teams, really trying to push Celtic and Rangers to make it more entertaining." However, ex Leeds United and MLS winger Mike Grella then quickly pointed out to Reo-Coker the reality that faces the rest of Scotland's top-flight. He replied: "It's difficult because of the following that Celtic and Rangers have and also (because of) their history, how much they've won and the money they make from European competitions. "They are very marketable so as far as the other teams being able to compete over a period of time, Celtic have really dominated over the last 10 years."

McInnes can't wait to get league campaign started

Hearts head coach Derek McInnes is looking forward to starting the Premiership season with a "tough" game against Aberdeen on Monday night. The new boss is targeting all three points from his first league game but knows it won't be an easy test against a Dons side "buoyed" by their Scottish Cup success. "We've been given a nice home game," the manager said. "There are lots of ingredients in it, but obviously it's a tough game. Aberdeen are a tough opponent and they're a good side. They'll be buoyant after their Scottish Cup success last season as well."They've got a lot of good players. It's not without its challenges, but we've got to make sure it's every bit as tough for them coming to Tynecastle."I think we're all looking forward to it."But the manager knows all their hard pre-season work will be forgotten if they don't get the job done on Monday night. "We've been pretty busy in the sense of trying to get the players ready for this moment," he added. "We had to get that process accelerated to get players ready for the League Cup. The benefit of that is you play competitive football."We finished the pre-season work off with a good performance last weekend against Sunderland."But all that gets quickly forgotten about unless you go and get that first win as quickly as possible. We're all under the same pressures as managers."With all the optimism, it doesn't matter how many signings you've made, you just want to try and get that first three points as quickly as possible."

Ahead of their clash against Aberdeen on Monday, head coach Derek McInnes has Tomas Bent Magnusson and Pierre Kabore in his sights. There could also be exits in the month ahead as their Premiership campaign gets set to start with a Tynecastle cracker. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Signings like Claudio Braga have hit the ground running and fans will hope for more recruits of that calibre. There are also former players on the move and other pieces of news breaking with Hearts intrigue. Here are some of the latest headlines, from a club hero's new role after leaving Sheffield Wednesday to third place backing. Hearts 'set pace' for third Dundee United favourite Andy McLaren sees Hearts setting the third pace tempo - thanks to McInnes. He knows the Jambos head coach well after spending time with him at Tannadice and believes that managerial appointment will guide the Gorgie team to a successful term. He said in the Sunday Post: 'Will Hearts, Hibs Aberdeen and Dundee United battle it out for third place? Will it be close or one pull away? Maybe one of them will run Celtic and Rangers close. "I've a feeling Hearts will set the pace for third spot. Derek has an enormous amount of experience and knows the Scottish game inside out. He is the perfect appointment for Hearts. From the outside looking in, it looked as though they might have been over complicating certain things when they didn't need to. 'In terms of the managerial appointment, Derek is the right man to drive them forward and make them really feared again. In recent times Tynecastle hasn't been a venue to have the visiting side going there with any trepidation. That will change. Wait and see. The stadium will be rocking again and it is one of the most intimidating arenas in the UK.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Former Jambos unite at Stenhousemuir A Hearts connection has been struck at Stenhousemuir. 1998 Scottish Cup winner Gary Naysmith has signed a new deal at the club he guided out of League Two into the third tier, penning fresh terms until the end of the 27/28 campaign. He has now signed a former Hearts striker, Dale Carrick, who joins after a stint at Stirling Albion. Carrick played 54 games for Hearts with eight goals and seven assists earlier in his career. Head of Football Operations Martin Christie added: 'I'm delighted to welcome Dale to the club. He is one we have spoken about a number of times over the years but the timing was never quite right to get the deal done. This time however, everything came together and I'd like to thank Andy Kennedy at Stirling Albion for his help in getting the deal over the line between the two clubs. Dale is a proven commodity in the Scottish leagues and with the average age of the squad being so young, we felt he would be a great addition for his experience as well as his playing ability.' Callum Paterson to turn striker after Sheffield Wednesday exit Hearts hero Callum Paterson has moved on to MK Dons after leaving Sheffield Wednesday, amid off the field issues at the Championship side. He can play a variety of positions but boss Paul Warne says the utility man will be deployed as an out and out number nine. He told MK Citizen: 'In his first training session, he nearly scored with a diving header. I've not seen a diving header in about ten years, I love them! He's settled into the group, and has trained really well. I do see him along that front line, I want him as my target man because that's what I think the team has been missing. I like him as a nine, but I do love a player who can play in different positions. The way we play, we love a cross, you need someone who can get on the end of them. But Rush, Aaron, Mendez, Scotty, Callum can play as a nine, so we've got options and they're all different. You want to give the opposition a different problem along the front nine. I like Callum as a nine, he constantly runs, he can score and he can head it, he's so game.'
