Germany tries Syrian man over deadly stabbing that stoked migration debate
DUESSELDORF, Germany, May 27 (Reuters) - A Syrian man stood trial in Duesseldorf on Tuesday over a knife attack claimed by Islamic State in which three people were killed, a case that stirred debate over foreigner crime in Germany and paved the way for a crackdown on migration.
The 27-year-old defendant, identified as Issa al H, is accused of swinging his knife at a crowd of revellers at a festival in the western town of Solingen last year, stabbing several people from behind.
He faces three counts of murder and 10 counts of attempted murder, and is also charged with membership in a foreign terrorist organisation.
Issa al H admitted guilt on his first day in court, where he appeared in a blue jumpsuit with his head bowed before him, only raising his head occasionally.
"I have brought heavy guilt upon myself," he said via a statement read by his attorney.
He offered his apology to the relatives of the victims and said he was prepared to accept his punishment.
He did not comment on the allegation that he committed the crime in coordination with the Islamic State militant group.
If convicted, the defendant faces life imprisonment.
The Solingen attack raised an outcry and drew calls for tough action against foreign perpetrators of violent crime in the run-up to Germany's February election, won by the conservatives under migration hardliner Friedrich Merz.
His coalition government, which took office earlier this month, has closed Germany's borders to undocumented migrants and vowed to ramp up deportations to Syria and Afghanistan.

Rodney Shippy, 58, was found inside his Broken Arrow abode dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after allegedly killing his son Logan, 10. Police discovered the two, and their dead dog, on Wednesday while serving a search warrant after relatives reported Shippy's daughter Alyssa missing since November. Horrifyingly, the body of 20-year-old Alyssa was also found inside the home in a state of decay. According to KJRH, the children's mother Lisa, 41, took her own life inside the address back in August 2022. Five months after that Lisa's step-father Kenneth Carpenter murdered her mother, Diane, and then killed himself, the outlet reported. Police have not officially announced the identity of the woman found inside the address, but the outlet spoke with relative Patti Williams who confirmed it was Alyssa. She said: '[Rodney] seemed to be holding it together months after [Lisa] passed. Then he started estranging himself to everyone'. Logan had his own YouTube account and would frequently post videos of the garage door at the property, something he was fascinated by - Williams said. One video from March gave a detailed tour of the house, which is strewn with rubbish and in a state of disrepair. It was that video that alerted family members. Spent beer cans, cardboard boxes, old water bottles can be seen littering the ground inside the home as their cat and dog roam around the rubbish. Towards the end of the clip Rodney can be seen laying on a bed inside the property playing Minecraft as his soon films the mounds of detritus surrounding him. Williams said: 'Not suitable for a child, no running water, trash. Looked like a completely different house. 'Logan was so smart, eager to learn, everyone who met him loved him. Alyssa was a bright light in this world.' 'She had a beautiful life ahead of her, and I feel like their lives are stolen from them', Williams added. A GoFundMe has since been launched for the remaining family to cover the funeral costs of the children. It says: 'Their loss has left our family in deep grief and unprepared for the financial burden that comes with arranging their funerals. 'We are reaching out to our community, friends, and loved ones for support during this unimaginable time. 'Every contribution, no matter the size, will go directly toward funeral expenses and helping our family honor their memories with the love and dignity they deserve.' In a statement, Broken Arrow Police Department said: 'We can now confirm the adult male found dead inside the house is 58-year-old Rodney Shippy. 'The juvenile male found dead is his 10-year-old son. We will not be releasing his name. 'At this time, the identity of the woman found dead has not been confirmed. The medical examiner will conduct a full investigation to make a positive identification. However, we can confirm, Alyssa Shippy is Rodney's daughter.'

Two killed after small plane crashes into German house
Two people have died after a small plane crashed into the terrace of a residential building in western Germany on Saturday. Local police say the collision happened in Korschenbroich, near the city of Mönchengladbach and the Dutch border. According to German publication BILD, the pilot was attempting to land minutes away in Mönchengladbach but reportedly experienced mechanical problems mid-air. The aircraft hit the terrace of the building, with a fire breaking out. Local reports say the collision sparked a large emergency services presence at the scene, with firefighters, police, and rescue teams present. The property has been left severely damaged by the crash and suffered fire and structural damage. A blaze at the property caused black clouds of smoke to billow into the sky above Korschenbroich on the Lower Rhine. According to the German news agency dpa, police said two people died, with one of the victims likely to be the plane's pilot.
