Hockey Canada sexual assault trial: Judge to rule on drunken night that shattered national trust
Justice Maria Carroccia is set to deliver the verdict on July 24 in the sexual assault trial (Image via The Canadian Press) A month after the dramatic closing arguments were delivered in one of the most explosive trials in Canadian sports history, the fate of five former Team Canada players now rests in the hands of Superior Court Justice Maria Carroccia. The case stems from a 2018 incident involving multiple hockey players and a 20-year-old woman in a London, Ontario hotel room — an event that has since ignited national debate over consent, trauma, and institutional accountability. The controversial trial involving five former junior hockey players nears its conclusion The five accused — Michael McLeod, Carter Hart, Dillon Dube, Alex Formenton, and Cal Foote — have all pleaded not guilty to charges of sexual assault. McLeod faces an additional charge for being a party to the offense. In a powerful closing statement last month, Crown attorney Meaghan Cunningham rejected defense arguments that framed the woman as an instigator. 'It's not only a myth,' Cunningham said, 'but I submit it is not what happened here on the evidence.' The Crown emphasized that drinking, flirting, or dancing should not be interpreted as signs of sexual availability — a point at the heart of this case. Cunningham added, 'At no time did anyone on any of the evidence here attempt to engage in a sincere conversation with (the woman) about what she truly wanted to happen.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Complete protection with iPru All-in-one Term Plan ICICI Pru Life Insurance Plan Get Quote Undo That, she argued, failed the legal test for consent, particularly considering the woman was intoxicated and in a room with multiple men she did not know. Defense argues the woman was a willing participant, questions trauma timeline In stark contrast, the defense teams maintained the woman was a consenting adult, pointing to her behavior and the video evidence. 'That is consistent with her not being surprised men were in the room and consistent with her wanting to have sex with them,' McLeod's lawyer David Humphrey argued. Further challenging the prosecution's case, Carter Hart's lawyer Riaz Sayani questioned the credibility of delayed trauma, noting that the woman initially did not describe fear or trauma in 2018, only doing so in 2022. Sayani claimed this undermined the Crown's psychological narrative. Ichalkaranji academy vandalised after student found dead
Kolhapur: A student from an Ichalkaranji-based academy allegedly died by suicide in his hostel bathroom on Tuesday afternoon, which led to subsequent violence at the institution. Yash Yadhav, who was preparing for entrance examinations while studying in Std XII, was found hanging from the shower. Though he was taken to a private hospital, he was pronounced dead. His body was later taken to the CPR Hospital, Kolhapur, for postmortem examination. The news of the student's death prompted local youths, mostly former students of the academy, to vandalise the institution's premises, causing damage to windows and the entrance. Inspector Mahesh Chavan, of the Ichalkaranji police station, said: "We registered the sudden death of the student. We are investigating further. So far, no one from the institution has come forward to register a case against the youths who attacked the establishment. " The deceased student's father, Ajit Yadav, described his son as academically gifted. "We suspect foul play and the police should investigate his death thoroughly," said the father. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Free Chess. Laptop Scam: BCC appoints special investigation officer;
Belagavi: Belagavi City Corporation (BCC) commissioner Shubha B on Tuesday clarified that she has ordered a detailed investigation into the alleged irregularities in the purchase and distribution of laptops to SC/ST students. The inquiry follows allegations of inflated pricing and the installation of pirated software on the distributed devices. A month ago, BCC distributed 203 laptops to meritorious SC/ST students using unutilised funds earmarked for the purpose from the past three years, supplemented by grants from the State Finance Commission (SFC). However, Dalit organisations recently staged protests in the city, accusing the corporation of supplying substandard laptops at inflated prices. During the council meeting held on Tuesday, several corporators, including Advocate Hanumant Kongali, Ravi Dhotre, Ramesh Sontakki, and Dinesh Nashipudi, raised concerns about the procurement process. Responding to the allegations, commissioner Shubha B informed the council that a special officer has been appointed to conduct a comprehensive investigation. She added that the laptops distributed to the 10 students were taken back for examination following reports of pirated software being installed. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Melhor e mais barato marketing que existe Balinhas Personalizadas Undo Corporators questioned the corporation's payment of Rs 49,000 per laptop, despite the maximum retail price (MRP) on the boxes being Rs 35,000. The investigating officer stated that the local HP distributor was asked to furnish a detailed cost breakdown based on the required specifications. The contractor, according to initial findings, installed Windows and other software for an additional Rs 10,000 — a matter also under scrutiny. Corporators allege misguidance by officials Corporator Hanumant Kongali strongly criticised BCC officials, accusing them of misleading elected representatives and misusing the intended fund. "The amount was meant to offer direct financial assistance to students, not for procuring laptops. Yet, the officials convinced corporators to approve the purchase. This is a serious violation and must be thoroughly investigated," he said. Kongali further highlighted procedural lapses, noting that tenders were floated in Jan, while approval from the Standing Committee on Finance was granted only in March. He called this sequence a 'major blunder' that demands accountability. MLA Abhay Patil also held the officials responsible for misleading the corporators in the case and demanded an inquiry. Mayor Mangesh Pawar directed commissioner Shubha B to table the investigation report before the council upon completion of the probe.
