Laptop Scam: BCC appoints special investigation officer;

Time of India5 hours ago

Belagavi: Belagavi City Corporation (BCC) commissioner Shubha B on Tuesday clarified that she has ordered a detailed investigation into the alleged irregularities in the purchase and distribution of laptops to SC/ST students.
The inquiry follows allegations of inflated pricing and the installation of pirated software on the distributed devices.
A month ago, BCC distributed 203 laptops to meritorious SC/ST students using unutilised funds earmarked for the purpose from the past three years, supplemented by grants from the State Finance Commission (SFC). However, Dalit organisations recently staged protests in the city, accusing the corporation of supplying substandard laptops at inflated prices.
During the council meeting held on Tuesday, several corporators, including Advocate Hanumant Kongali, Ravi Dhotre, Ramesh Sontakki, and Dinesh Nashipudi, raised concerns about the procurement process. Responding to the allegations, commissioner Shubha B informed the council that a special officer has been appointed to conduct a comprehensive investigation. She added that the laptops distributed to the 10 students were taken back for examination following reports of pirated software being installed.

Corporators questioned the corporation's payment of Rs 49,000 per laptop, despite the maximum retail price (MRP) on the boxes being Rs 35,000. The investigating officer stated that the local HP distributor was asked to furnish a detailed cost breakdown based on the required specifications. The contractor, according to initial findings, installed Windows and other software for an additional Rs 10,000 — a matter also under scrutiny.
Corporators allege misguidance by officials
Corporator Hanumant Kongali strongly criticised BCC officials, accusing them of misleading elected representatives and misusing the intended fund. "The amount was meant to offer direct financial assistance to students, not for procuring laptops. Yet, the officials convinced corporators to approve the purchase. This is a serious violation and must be thoroughly investigated," he said.
Kongali further highlighted procedural lapses, noting that tenders were floated in Jan, while approval from the Standing Committee on Finance was granted only in March. He called this sequence a 'major blunder' that demands accountability. MLA Abhay Patil also held the officials responsible for misleading the corporators in the case and demanded an inquiry.
Mayor Mangesh Pawar directed commissioner Shubha B to table the investigation report before the council upon completion of the probe.

Madhya Pradesh: Muslim man beaten by cow vigilantes dies, another critical

A Muslim man who was beaten by a group of cow vigilantes in Madhya Pradesh's Raisen district on the suspicion of transporting cattle died on Tuesday, NDTV reported The incident occurred on June 5, when 35-year-old Junaid Qureshi, who operated a dairy business in Bhopal's Jinsi area, along with his companion, Armaan, were transporting seven cows and one bull in a pickup truck near Mehargaon village, The Indian Express reported. Around 20 to 25 men claiming to be part of a cow protection group stopped their vehicle between Sanchi and Raisen and allegedly assaulted them, the families of the two men claimed. 'He was transporting the cows for dairy,' the newspaper quoted Mohammad Maj Qureshi, a family member, as having claimed. 'The men stopped them in Megaon and beat them through the night.' The group also looted approximately Rs 2 lakh from the two men, the family added. Qureshi and Armaan were taken to Bhopal's Hamidia Hospital and admitted to the intensive care unit, according to NDTV. Qureshi died on Tuesday morning, while Armaan remained critical. Videos of the incident were widely circulated on social media, NDTV reported. Following the incident, a first information report was filed on several charges, including attempt to murder and rioting with deadly weapons. Nitin Ahirwar, the official in charge of the Sanchi Police Station, told the channel that three or four of the persons accused in the matter had been arrested. He said that more than 10 others were absconding and a search was on for them in Vidisha and the surrounding areas. A separate FIR was also filed against Qureshi based on a complaint by a Raisen-based bike workshop owner under sections of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and the Madhya Pradesh Prohibition of Slaughter of Cows Act, according to The Indian Express. The complainant claimed that he, along with three others, intercepted Qureshi's vehicle based on a tip-off about cattle smuggling from the Rahatgarh area. The group found the cattle 'cruelly crammed' into the vehicle and bound for slaughterhouses in Bhopal, the complainant said, adding that when questioned, Qureshi and Armaan 'provided no satisfactory answers and attempted to escape from the vehicle'.

A Lithium startup is building a US battery plant that will skirt Trump's tariffs

US startup Pure Lithium Corp. is working on a testing facility to build a new type of lithium battery that's completely manufactured domestically. The company has developed a lithium metal battery that Chief Executive Officer Emilie Bodoin says will displace lithium-ion batteries. Pure Lithium has spent the last four years doing research and development on the technology, which could be used in electric vehicles, utility-scale energy storage and other applications. 'We're working as hard as we can to build a prototype pilot facility,' Bodoin said Tuesday in a Bloomberg Television interview. She added that the company is expanding its lithium production process and is integrating that into a manufacturing plant, 'and as soon as we get it up and running we're going to start getting these batteries out into the hands of US customers that need it.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Florida: These Companies Are Overcharging You for Auto Insurance OTTO Insurance Read More Undo The Boston-based company's move to build a pilot plant comes as President Donald Trump 's administration sets the stage for tariffs on imports of key battery components from China. Pure Lithium says it extracts lithium from brine to manufacture a battery free of graphite, nickel, cobalt and manganese, allowing it to be produced without any inputs from China. The company received a letter of interest from the US Export-Import Bank in April for financing of as much as $300 million. Live Events
