Trial of trio accused of feeding slain women to pigs stirs outrage for justice in South Africa

IOL Newsa day ago
A trial involving three farm workers accused of a gruesome double murder has ignited demands for justice and reforms in rural South African farming communities.
The gruesome murder trial of a white farmer and two of his workers accused of dumping the bodies of two women in a pigsty has reignited calls for justice and accountability across South African communities.
This internationally watched case has been postponed until next week, and it has already sparked strong reactions from labour and human rights activists.
This trial, which began on Monday at the Polokwane High Court, follows the discovery in August 2024 of the decomposed remains of Maria Makgato and Kudzai Ndlovu, found within a pig's enclosure on a farm in Sebayen.
The two women were reportedly killed while searching for food on a farm near Polokwane, and their bodies were then allegedly fed to pigs in an attempt to destroy evidence.
Their bodies were then alleged to have been given to pigs in an apparent attempt to dispose of the evidence.
Pig farmer Zachariah Olivier, as well as farm employees Rudolf De Wet and William Musora, face charges of murder and attempted murder for shooting at Ndlovu's husband, who was with the women at the farm, as well as possession of an unlicensed firearm and obstructing justice.
Musora, a Zimbabwean national, is also facing an additional charge under the Immigration Act for allegedly being in the country illegally.
De Wet, a 20-year-old, turned State witness when the trial started on Monday, testified that Olivier was the one who shot and killed the two women.
Mametlwe Sebei, president of the General Industries Workers Union of South Africa (Giwusa), said the union welcomes the start of the trial, despite the unjustifiable delays that have deepened the pain for the victims' families and farmworkers across the country.
He further stated that the horrific crime, killing impoverished Black individuals scavenging for food and leaving their bodies for pigs to consume like refuse, exemplifies the ongoing dehumanisation faced by farmworkers.
Sebei noted that this reflects a persistent system of white terror and severe exploitation still prevalent on farms.
He emphasised that they are calling for the trial, along with a harsh sentence, to send a clear message that such brutality will not be tolerated in a democratic South Africa.
Sebei warned that the case reveals ongoing failures to protect and support farmworkers in rural areas, who remain isolated and vulnerable due to weak government oversight, poor access to unions, and a legacy of exploitation. He stressed the need to address these issues to prevent future abuses.
'Many farmers operate as feudal lords, believing oversight won't reach them. There is a need to send a message and create conditions where this cannot be.
'The case also epitomises how racialised, exploitative labour practices persist 30 years into democracy. Although in this case the victims might not have been workers, the reign of terror they have fallen victim to directly points to the door of this parasitic system of primitive slavery.'
Sebei added that while efforts to organise farmworkers, raise awareness of their rights, and provide legal assistance, these initiatives often encounter resistance from farmers who obstruct access to their farms. This challenge is further compounded by government policies that permit such obstructions.
He said it's crucial to build workers' confidence, and I believe this can be achieved through mass campaigns, rural rallies, and strong solidarity from the broader labour movement.
The trial was postponed to next week.

Murder-accused businessman Katiso 'KT' Molefe declares assets worth millions

JOHANNESBURG – Murder-accused Sandton businessman Katiso Molefe has declared assets worth millions, revealing a lavish lifestyle before the Alexandra Magistrates Court, where he is applying for bail. Molefe faces charges of murder and conspiracy to commit murder in connection with the killing of musicians Oupa Sefoka knowns as DJ Sumbody and DJ Vinto, whose real name is Hector Buthelezi. Sefoka and Buthelezi were both killed in a hail of bullets in the 2022, in separate incidents which the State believes Mofele orchestrated He has also been charged with the murders of Sefoka's bodyguards, who he was travelling with when he was shot in November 2022. ALSO READ: Court hears Molefe involved in illicit drug trade and murders of DJ Sumbody & DJ Vintos were linked to this In his bid for bail Molefe's lawyer Advocate Michael Hellens read his affidavit where he revealed that he is willing to sell some of his assets for bail as he must afford bail in his other murder case. ' In my personal capacity I'm the owner of a Mercedes Benz SL600 worth approximately R400, 000 and through my company I also owned a V Class Mercedes valued at R1.8 million and a Range Rover worth R1.2 million. I actually sold my V Class Mercedes to pay for legal fees and bail.' INVESTIGATORS ARGUE AGAINST MOLEFE'S BAIL BID At the same time, investigators have argued against the release of Molefe, saying he is a dangerous criminal with no regard for human life. Molefe is also on trial for another hit on Vereeniging engineer Armand Swart. On Wednesday, the police officers leading the investigation into Molefe sat in the Alexandra Magistrates Court surrounded by heavily armed guards. While Molefe was out on R100,000 bail for another murder case against him, the lead investigating officer in the current matter before court said there is an imminent danger should Molefe be released on bail. 'Witnesses have indicated that they fear for their lives since his release on bail. There is an imminent danger that if Molefe is released on bail once more, witnesses will go in hiding and will refuse to come to court.' Police also believe that if Molefe is granted bail, there is a likelihood that he will destroy evidence as one of the AK47 rifles used in the shooting of DJ Sumbody remains missing. Molefe's bail application was postponed to next Friday, and he will remain behind bars.

WhatsApp is curbing scam networks by banning millions of malicious accounts

WhatsApp is removing millions of malicious accounts and launching enhanced in-app safety tools to fight fraud and deception. Image: Freepik WhatsApp has ramped up its global efforts to combat criminal scam networks, removing millions of malicious accounts and launching enhanced in-app safety tools to safeguard users from fraud and deception. The tech giant revealed that over the past six months, it proactively identified and banned more than 6.8 million accounts tied to criminal scam syndicates. These swift actions halted scammers before they could roll out their fraudulent schemes, safeguarding millions of users from potential harm. In 2023, former Public Protector Thuli Madonsela fell victim to a WhatsApp scam. On June 7, she revealed on X (formerly known as Twitter) that both she and a friend lost thousands of rand after a scammer took over the WhatsApp account of a mutual friend to trick them. 'He was pretending to be that friend. It was only when the scammer became so greedy and brazen that my son and I figured out the scam and warned other friends. WhatsApp ID theft or hacking is real,' she tweeted. Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ WhatsApp highlighted that scammers usually work from criminal scam centres running various schemes simultaneously, such as fraudulent cryptocurrency investments and pyramid schemes. They often ask for upfront payments to guarantee returns, which serves as a major warning sign. These scams start on platforms like dating apps or through texts, then shift to social media, messaging apps like WhatsApp, and finally to payment or crypto platforms. 'This multi-platform approach is designed to evade detection by individual services, making comprehensive disruption more challenging.' Kojo Boakye, Meta's Vice President of Public Policy for Africa, the Middle East, and Türkiye, highlighted that combating scams is an ongoing challenge. He stated that they are continuously improving their security measures to stay one step ahead of malicious actors. "This is part of our unwavering commitment to protect our users, not just by banning malicious accounts, but by empowering individuals with the tools and knowledge they need to recognise and avoid these sophisticated threats. We believe that a safer messaging environment is built through a combination of robust technology, proactive detection, and user education," he said. The company also highlighted a recent example of cross-industry teamwork, where WhatsApp, Meta, and OpenAI worked together to dismantle a scam ring based in Cambodia. The group exploited ChatGPT to craft initial messages that guided victims to WhatsApp, before swiftly shifting them to Telegram. There, victims were instructed to like videos on TikTok and were ultimately pressured into depositing funds into cryptocurrency accounts. In light of emerging threats, WhatsApp is introducing new anti-scam tools alongside its efforts to dismantle scam operations. These features are specifically designed to defend users against common scam techniques: Group Messaging: A new safety overview will now appear when a user is added to an unfamiliar group by someone not in their contacts. This overview provides key group information and safety tips, allowing users to exit the group without viewing the chat. Notifications from such groups will be silenced until the user explicitly chooses to engage. Individual Messaging: WhatsApp is testing new approaches to caution users before they engage with unknown contacts. This includes providing additional context about the sender when initiating a chat with someone not in their contacts, enabling users to make informed decisions. Furthermore, WhatsApp encourages users to adopt a 'Pause, Question, Verify' approach when faced with suspicious messages. The strategy includes taking a moment to assess the sender's identity, questioning the legitimacy of the request, and verifying the information through alternate communication channels. Late last year, in 2024, the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) issued a warning to the public about fraudulent WhatsApp messages circulating across the country. The Department of Social Development entity cautioned people to be vigilant against fake messages containing Sassa OTP codes sent through WhatsApp. Sassa clarified that it does not send OTP codes for the Covid-19 Social Relief of Distress Grant via WhatsApp, and they urged anyone receiving such messages to be wary, as these are likely scams.
