Microsoft Confirms Emergency Windows Update—Your PC ‘Might Fail'

Forbesa day ago
Republished on August 20 with release of emergency update.
'Reset and recovery operations on some Windows versions might fail,' Microsoft has suddenly admitted, promising 'an out-of-band update for the affected platforms to resolve this issue in the coming days.' That could be as soon as today.
Windows Latest reports the company 'has warned millions of users on Windows 11 23H2/22H2 and Windows 10 against using the built-in Reset and Recovery feature.' Following the mandatory August security updates, PC users need to be careful.
Microsoft says after installing the update (KB5063875), 'attempts to reset or recover the device might fail. This issue happens when users click to reset their PC, to fix problems using Windows Update or to RemoteWipe CSP.'
Windows 11 24H2 is unaffected, which will be welcome, but tens of millions of Windows 10 users who are still celebrating Microsoft's u-turn on security support beyond October are impacted by this latest issue and need to await the emergency out-of-band-update.
Windows Latest warns 'this is a critical issue, and Microsoft should have pulled the faulty Windows updates (KB5063875 and KB5063709).' The website reports 'an emergency patch could drop as early as the afternoon of August 19. For 23H2, Microsoft is testing KB5066189, but it's not yet live on Update Catalog or Windows Update.'
This comes as reports continue to roll in that another August update fail has been corrupting PC SSDs when writing large files. All told, a worrying time for users. And just weeks after Microsoft's last broken Windows apology.
'While the feature is broken,' Windows Latest says, 'Windows does not show any warnings that the recovery process would fail, so unless you've read this article or Microsoft's documentation, you'll never know that the Reset & Recovery features are not working and proceed with the Reset.' You really shouldn't do that.
Update on August 20: Microsoft has now issued an emergency out-of-band update to fix this issue, confirming 'tis issue was resolved in the out-of-band (OOB) update KB5066189. If your device is impacted by this issue, we recommend installing this out-of-band update instead of KB5063875.'
The Windows-maker tells users that 'since this is a cumulative update, you do not need to apply any previous update before installing KB5066189, as it supersedes all previous updates for affected versions.'
While the update addresses the specific issue, 'this update does not contain any additional security updates from those available in the August 2025 security update.'
When you apply the update tyour PC will 'require a device restart. Microsoft also says that 'if your organization uses the affected platforms and hasn't yet deployed the August 2025 security update yet, we recommend you apply this OOB update instead."
Windows Latest confirms that 'Today's emergency updates are rolling out via Windows Update, fix issues with 'Reset this PC' where the recovery process fails.'

Workday's forecast for quarterly subscription revenue disappoints

(Reuters) -Workday raised its annual subscription revenue forecast on Thursday, but an in-line outlook for the current quarter sent the human resources software provider's shares down nearly 4% in extended trading. Workday's customers rely on the company's single cloud-based platform, which provide applications to manage services including recruitment, payroll, accounting and audit. In an uncertain economy, customers are tightening their spending on platforms like Workday as they reassess budgets and timing. Workday's AI-driven tools help organizations automate tasks such as screening job applications, scheduling interviews, and streamlining workforce planning. The company on Thursday also announced it will buy Paradox, giving Workday an AI-powered talent acquisition suite to help customers more efficiently find, hire, and onboard employees. It did not provide financial details of the deal. Workday competes with Oracle, SAP and payroll providers such as Automatic Data Processing and Dayforce. Its customers include United Airlines, Visa and FedEx. For the third quarter, Workday expects subscription revenue of $2.24 billion, in line with analysts' average estimate, according to data compiled by LSEG. It raised its fiscal 2026 subscription revenue forecast to $8.82 billion, compared to its prior forecast of $8.80 billion. Workday's total revenue for the second quarter ended July 31 stood at $2.35 billion, compared with an estimate of $2.34 billion. Subscription revenue rose 14% to $2.17 billion.

Blackstone Bets Big: $1B+ Power Play into the AI Data Center Gold Rush

This article first appeared on GuruFocus. Blackstone (NYSE:BX) is going all in on the AI data center boom. The firm just increased its senior secured debt facility for Aligned Data Centers to more than $1 billiondoubling down on its original $600 million commitment from March last year. That earlier round funded an 80MW buildout near Salt Lake City. This time, the capital is aimed at something far bigger: Aligned's plan to roll out five gigawatts of new data center capacity across the Americas. Warning! GuruFocus has detected 5 Warning Signs with BX. Is BX fairly valued? Test your thesis with our free DCF calculator. The Dallas-based operator is quickly becoming one of the most heavily backed names in the space. Since January, it's raised over $7 billion in debt and more than $5 billion in fresh equity from investors including Macquarie Asset Management. Behind the scenes, the story is simple: hyperscalers need compute, AI needs power, and the infrastructure buildout is too capital-intensive for tech companies to do it alone. That's where private credit steps in. And it's not just Blackstonefirms are racing to underwrite everything from real estate loans to private-grade bonds to meet the demand. The scale of financing is exploding. Meta recently selected Pimco and Blue Owl to lead a $29 billion package to fund its own data center expansion. The takeaway? Private lenders are becoming a key pillar in the AI arms racenot just writing checks, but shaping the architecture of tomorrow's internet. Blackstone's latest move suggests they want to be at the heart of it.

Anthropic Rolls Out Claude Code For Developers

This article first appeared on GuruFocus. Anthropic is giving its Claude platform some extra muscle. The San Francisco AI startup said Thursday that companies using its Enterprise and Teams plans can now add premium seats that come with Claude Code, an AI-powered coding assistant built to handle everything from editing to testing to version control integration. Warning! GuruFocus has detected 3 Warning Sign with AMZN. Is GOOG fairly valued? Test your thesis with our free DCF calculator. The pitch is simple: help developers move faster. Claude Code is priced at $150 per month per premium seat on Team plans, compared with $30 for a standard seat. Enterprise pricing hasn't been disclosed. It puts Anthropic right up against Microsoft's (NASDAQ:MSFT) GitHub Copilot and Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) enterprise AI offerings. Some early feedback has been eye-catching. Altana, a New York supply-chain software company, said Claude Code sped up development work by as much as 10x. That kind of boost underscores Anthropic's aim to turn Claude into more than just a chatbot a real coding partner for businesses. Backed by Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN), Google and Lightspeed, Anthropic is already a central player in the AI race. And with Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) reportedly eyeing Claude to power its Siri reboot, the startup's profile is only climbing.
