NASAs Webb telescope finds new tiny moon around Uranus

New York, Aug 19 (AP) The Webb Space Telescope has spotted a new tiny moon orbiting Uranus.
The new member of the lunar gang, announced Tuesday by NASA, appears to be just 10 kilometres wide. It was spotted by the telescope's near-infrared camera during observations in February.
Scientists think it hid for so long — even eluding the Voyager 2 spacecraft during its flyby about 40 years ago — because of its faintness and small size.
Uranus has 28 known moons that are named after characters from Shakespeare and Alexander Pope. About half are smaller and orbit the planet at closer range. This newest addition, still nameless, ups the planet's total moon count to 29. (AP) RD RD

Bhubaneswar, Aug 21 (PTI) The Odisha government on Thursday launched the 19th edition of the Young Astronomer Talent Search (YATS) — a flagship initiative for students of classes 6 to 10 across the state to showcase their interest and aptitude in space science, astrophysics and astronomy, Organised by Tata Steel in collaboration with Pathani Samanta Planetarium, the talent search programme offers students a unique opportunity to explore the fields of astronomy, astrophysics, and space science, while celebrating the legacy of legendary Odia astronomer Pathani Samanta. Speaking at the official launch, Science & Technology Minister Krushna Chandra Patra said, 'The theme for this year is 'Stargazer Today, Gagannaut Tomorrow', in sync with India's Gaganyaan mission. Competitions will be conducted at school and district levels, culminating in a grand finale on December 13 at the planetarium in Bhubaneswar." He informed that 30 winners from across the state will have the extraordinary opportunity to visit the Indian Space Research Organisation facility in Bengaluru and interact with the scientists. This year's YATS edition includes an open quiz for students of classes 6–8, and a multiple-choice question (MCQ) test for students of classes 9–10. Since inception 18 years ago, YATS has reached more than 4.71 lakh students across Odisha and 230 selected winners have had the unique opportunity to witness India's stride in space research by visiting various ISRO centres. Centre approves Rs 3,900 crore for education projects in Rajasthan
Last Updated: Jaipur, Aug 21 (PTI) Rajasthan is set to receive nearly Rs 3,900 crore from the Centre for strengthening school education infrastructure, with a focus on ICT, smart classrooms and science laboratories, officials said on Thursday. The development follows Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma's recent meeting in New Delhi with Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, where he sought enhanced central assistance for the state's education sector. According to an official statement, the Centre has agreed to release an additional Rs 697.88 crore for setting up 3,834 smart classes, 2,657 Information and Communication Technology (ICT) labs and 2,256 science laboratories in government schools across the state. The facilities will include biology, physics and chemistry labs aimed at promoting scientific learning and innovation among students. In addition, the state will receive Rs 3,200 crore under the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan, of which the first instalment will be released soon, the statement said. Officials said the funds are expected to significantly boost digital and science education in government schools, strengthen IT infrastructure, and provide students with greater access to quality learning resources. 'The Centre's approval will help ensure quality education in every corner of the state," the statement said, adding that students would benefit from exposure to modern teaching tools and practical science learning. The combined funding takes the Centre's support to Rajasthan's education sector to nearly Rs 3,900 crore. Dinosaur-Era Fossils Suspected After Bone-Like Remains Found In Rajasthan Village

Fossil-like remains, including a large bone-shaped structure, were unearthed in a village in Rajasthan's Jaisalmer district on Wednesday, sparking speculation that the site may be connected to the prehistoric dinosaur era. These unusual stone formations and bones resembling a large skeletal structure were found in Megha village, around 45 kilometres from Jaisalmer, by locals while digging near the lake. The Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Fatehgarh, along with the Tehsildar, visited the site and examined the remains. A resident, who informed the authorities, said that a skeleton-like structure, possibly a dinosaur spine, was found near the lake. 'At the lake, we saw what looked like skeletons and stones with imprints. I realised these could be ancient remains, so I contacted the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and the administration," NDTV quoted Shyam Singh as saying. Experts told NDTV that the remains are very likely dinosaur fossils; however, it's difficult to draw a conclusion before scientific tests. Geologist Narayan Das Inkhiya, who inspected the site, said the remains could very likely be dinosaur fossils. 'It's very possible these are dinosaur fossils. They appear to be medium-sized, with fossils and what might be the remains of a wing. It's difficult to confirm without further study, but once the Geological Survey of India (GSI) team arrives, we can scientifically determine their age and historical context." 'Jaisalmer's rock formations, with marine and freshwater deposits, date back 180 million years to the Jurassic age when dinosaurs thrived," he added. After the discovery, a large crowd of villagers gathered at the site. One resident who photographed the remains said, 'While digging around the lake, villagers noticed what looked like ancient remains. We photographed them and sent the images to the district administration and archaeology department." Paleontological remains have been discovered in Jaisalmer over the years, including bone fossils in Thiyat, a dinosaur footprint, and a well-preserved dinosaur egg found in 2023. The discovery near the ancient lake in Megha village is believed to be the fifth dinosaur-related find in the region.
