Darts player who Michael van Gerwen called 'pub' standard responds to apology
Michael van Gerwen has issued an apology to the darts rival he branded a 'pub player'. After narrowly winning 6-4 against Pero Ljubic in an underwhelming performance at the Polish Darts Masters, the triple world champion did not mince words when commenting on the Croatian's ability.
Van Gerwen, who recently split from wife Daphne, was well short of his best, but Ljubic, 47, couldn't take advantage as he exited the tournament at the first hurdle. The Green Machine derided both his own performance and the state of Ljubic's game.
"It wasn't a good game at all. Pero needs to be happy that he won one leg. Pero is not a good player. Pero is a pub player, we all know that," said Van Gerwen, who was defeated in the quarter-finals by Rob Cross.
"I'm not harsh. He is a lovely man but when you throw treble 12 for treble 20 then you need to go back to the dartboard [to practice]. I'm the one to blame. But I made Pero look good today. Pero won a few legs and it feels like his birthday!"
Van Gerwen, who has gone two years without winning a major tournament and failed to reach the Premier League play-offs, faced a backlash from fans for his brutal remarks. However, he has since issued an apology to Ljubic, who was unruffled by the comments, attributing MVG's reaction to discontent with his own performance.
The 'Croatian Knight', as Pero is known, considers any issue with MVG water under the bridge. Per Oche 180, Pero said: "Michael and I have known each other for a long time. We like to have a laugh. There was no bad intention behind his words.
"He was just frustrated with his own performance, and I understand that. To be honest, Michael apologised to me straight away. As I said, we know each other well, and I know he meant no harm. In fact, during a later chat, he even gave me some motivation.
"He's a genuinely decent guy and a top-class player, so don't judge him too harshly. Emotions can run high in those moments. For me, what matters most is someone's honesty, not what the internet says.
"As I mentioned, he regretted his words, and he apologised. That's enough for me. Once again, don't be too quick to judge. Emotions can take over in moments like that."
After withdrawing from this weekend's Baltic Sea Darts Open in Germany, Van Gerwen is now preparing for the World Matchplay in Blackpool, which begins on Saturday, July 19. He has been handed a blockbuster first-round clash against fellow Dutch icon Raymond van Barneveld, who only just qualified for the prestigious major via his standing in the ProTour Order of Merit.
One big name will be missing after 2023 world champion Michael Smith failed to qualify either via the world rankings or the ProTour order of Merit.

Liverpool targeting £87m star as back-up transfer option to Alexander Isak
Liverpool are plotting a transfer move for Paris Saint-Germain star Bradley Barcola in the event that their bid to sign top target Alexander Isak ends in failure. The Premier League champions had appeared to have got the bulk of their transfer business over the line having secured deals for Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike. But the landscape changed dramatically as Isak dropped a bombshell at St James' Park, with the 25-year-old forward informing Newcastle of his desire to explore a fresh challenge elsewhere. Sensing an opportunity, Liverpool wasted little time in testing Newcastle's resolve with an opening offer of £110million – plus adds-on – for the Sweden international, which was rejected out of hand. The Magpies are believed to be holding out for a fee in the region of £150m for their star striker and the Reds are expected to return with a follow-up bid in due course. In The Mixer: Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every week – click here and sign up before Friday to make sure you don't miss the first edition. With speculation mounting over Isak's future, the attacker was ordered to train separately from Eddie Howe's squad and stay away from a barbecue at Newcastle's training ground on Wednesday. According to L'Equipe, Liverpool have been forced to 'consider their options' while Newcastle dig in their heels over Isak and Paris Saint-Germain forward Barcola has emerged as a potential back-up target. It's claimed Liverpool are yet to give up hope of landing Isak, but Barcola is one of two names – along with Real Madrid's Rodrygo – that 'stand out' should a move for Newcastle's talisman prove impossible. The Merseyside giants are said to have been 'following Barcola for a long time' and could take advantage of this 'loyalty' to convince the winger to move to swap Paris for Anfield. However, the report suggests PSG are unlikely to let Barcola leave for anything less than €100 million (£87m) this summer. Barcola's current contract at the French capital runs through to June 2028. The 22-year-old has scored 26 goals in 103 games since joining PSG from Lyon back in 2023, helping the club win seven pieces of silverware, including last season's Champions League trophy in that time. In May, Barcola was named in the UNFP Ligue 1 Team of the Year along with eight of his PSG team-mates. More Trending Bayern Munich have also registered a strong interest in Barcola in recent months, but Luis Enrique has been keen to shut down any suggestion that the France international could be on the move. 'Bradley Barcola's future? I have no doubt he'll remain our player,' the PSG head coach told reporters in June. 'We like the fact that our players are interesting to other clubs. But he's one of those young players we've been banking on. 'I expect him to play here for many more years.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. Chelsea could make move for new defender after injury blow
Chelsea defender Levi Colwill is a doubt for the start of the Premier League season after sustaining a knock in training on Monday. Manager Enzo Maresca confirmed the injury, calling it 'a problem', but did not specify its nature or expected recovery time. The 22-year-old's absence is a blow as he was a pivotal player last season, helping Chelsea secure a Champions League spot. Maresca indicated that Chelsea might need to consider a backup option for Colwill in the remaining transfer window if his recovery is prolonged. Chelsea are set to face Crystal Palace in their Premier League opener in just over a week.
