No AI on Daniel O'Connell stamp featuring TV aerial

RTÉ News2 days ago
An Post has said AI software was not used to generate the artwork on a stamp which appears to show a television aerial on a building behind the nationalist leader Daniel O'Connell.
The stamp - released this week - depicts O'Connell as he travels through Dublin city on an elaborate gilded chariot following his release from Richmond Prison in 1844. He had been jailed for three months following a proposed monster meeting in Clontarf which was declared illegal.
The background behind O'Connell features an image of the GPO on one side, and on the other side is a building with a chimney on which there appears to be an old style television aerial.
Television was not received in Ireland until 1949, some 105 years after the image depicted on the stamp.
Listeners contacted RTÉ querying whether the image had been generated by artificial intelligence software which frequently gets small, but important details wrong.
An Post said the stamps are an artistic representation of O'Connell and the huge impact he had in Ireland at the time.
A spokesperson said the stamps were developed by the renowned Irish designer and artist David Rooney who "included some sort of visual signal to link to the very modern global range and impact of O'Connell".
"O'Connell's methods in terms of Communications and galvanising the population were thoroughly modern, hence the inclusion of a sort of artistic anachronism to link those very points."
An Post said it does not us AI in stamp design, and it is "one of the most prolific and constant commission of Irish art and design".
"We commissioned two stamps last year by an established AI artist – to show AI design. But that was a once-off," said a spokesperson.

Should Leaving Cert students studying Irish do a few mandatory weeks in the Gaeltacht?

A FIANNA FÁIL TD has proposed that Leaving Certificate students studying Irish should undertake a mandatory three weeks in the Gaeltacht to brush up on their oral abilities. 'I don't think it's acceptable that after 14 years of formal education in Irish in this country so many people are not confident enough to speak in Irish, don't have the ability to speak in Irish, and that it is not as widely spoken as I would like it to be,' Ryan O'Meara, TD for Tipperary North, said in a video pitching the idea. Couple walk from Donegal to Leinster House to highlight devastation in Gaza

A COUPLE HAVE reached Leinster House after setting off from Donegal last Friday to highlight the devastating situation in Gaza. Dr Mireille and John Sweeney set off from their home in Ardara, Co Donegal, having felt compelled to take some form of action. Speaking to The Journal , Mireille, who is Jewish and originally from France, explained that she and her husband have been filled with horror watching the events unfold in the Gaza Strip. Mireille, a recently retired GP, has been living in Ireland since 1984. She told The Journal that both her great-grandfathers were rabbis, and her grandfather's extended family were killed in the Holocaust. Advertisement 'I just couldn't cope with the fact that what is happening in Palestine is what the Jewish suffered, and it is Israel who is causing that,' she said. She added that Israel is committing a genocide upon the people of Gaza. 'It's nothing to do about being antisemitic,' she said. 'I am Jewish – and you can't let a genocide happen.' It was John's idea on Thursday that the two should set off on the walk to the capital city the following day. 'We're not walkers,' Mireille said, 'but we just headed off and that was it.' The couple completed the walk themselves, but were often joined by others for parts of the day as they made their way across the country. They arrived in Blanchardstown yesterday and continued on this morning. They were met by a number of groups at Leinster House, including Irish Healthcare Workers for Palestine. John hopes that the couple's march to the capital will be replicated and apply pressure upon the Irish government to take further action on the humanitarian crisis within Gaza. When she spoke to The Journal this afternoon, Mireille said that the group were heading towards the French Embassy in Dublin to spread their message further. Today, in a similar fashion, former Clare All-Star hurler Tony Griffin began a 200km walk from his home in Co Kildare to his native Co Clare in solidarity with the people of Palestine. Griffin said that he is undertaking the journey over the next number of days to raise awareness of the humanitarian crisis. Readers like you are keeping these stories free for everyone...
