Union cabinet approves Mawlyngkhung-Panchgram greenfield expressway
The union cabinet, under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday granted the approval for a 166.80 km greenfield expressway (national high-speed corridor) along National Highway-6 connecting Mawlyngkhung near Shillong in Meghalaya to Panchgram near Silchar in Assam.
The entire stretch will comprise 34 viaducts, 19 major bridges, and 153 minor bridges. This expressway will not only improve connectivity between these two states but also between the rest of the country and the northeastern states of Meghalaya, Tripura, Mizoram, and Manipur. The project is poised to become the shortest and fastest freight route for trucks and heavy vehicles bound for Silchar and further east.
The corridor will also spur economic development, including development of industries in Meghalaya, as it passes through cement and coal production areas of Meghalaya, a government release said. 'This corridor will cater to the national and international tourists coming from well-connected Guwahati Airport, Shillong Airport, Silchar Airport (via existing NH-06) connecting Guwahati to Silchar. This would connect scenic places of tourist attraction in the North-East and promote tourism.'
The construction will be executed under the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM) with a total capital outlay of ₹22,864 crore.
Taking to X, union road transport and highway minister Nitin Garkari said this expressway will link five PM Gati Shakti economic nodes, significantly enhancing regional economic integration.
Once completed, the road will reduce journey time from eight hours and 30 minutes to just five hours. The travel distance between Guwahati and Silchar will shrink to 245 kilometres—an approximate reduction of 25%—while average vehicular speeds are expected to double, he added.

It will be Modi's maiden engagement abroad since Operation Sindoor, presenting him with an opportunity to highlight the menace of cross-border terrorism at a global forum. The visit is expected to mark the beginning of improvement in ties, which were hit by former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's "pro-Khalistan policies", said experts. During the summit, Modi could meet other G7 leaders - from the US, UK, France, Italy, Japan and Germany - including US President Donald Trump. This year's summit is especially significant as it coincides with the 50th anniversary of the G7. ET had reported in April that India was planning to restore ties with Canada at the level of high commissioner months after withdrawing its envoy over the " Khalistan extremism " issue, with seasoned Indian diplomat Dinesh Patnaik being considered for the post. Patnaik, currently India's envoy to Spain may be appointed as India's next envoy to Ottawa, according to people in the know.

SRINAGAR: Bridging the 'dil ki doori' (distance between hearts) between Delhi and Srinagar by freeing Kashmiri prisoners is as crucial to establishing a connection as opening the Valley's first rail link with the rest of the country, J&K's chief cleric and separatist Hurriyat leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq said Friday after PM Narendra Modi flagged off the inaugural Vande Bharat Express train from Katra station. 'If the PM truly seeks to close the gap, as he often mentions in his speeches, then humanitarian steps are the real way forward. Train links are welcome, but it is the human links that matter and endure,' Mirwaiz told an Eid-ul-Adha congregation at the Jamia Masjid in Srinagar. He said the festival doesn't bring any joy to thousands of families in J&K whose sons, husbands, fathers and brothers had been incarcerated for years, many allegedly without a trial, in jails within and outside J&K. 'With each passing day, more of our youth are detained,' he said. 'All such prisoners, including politicians, remain in the prayers and thoughts of the people of Kashmir.' PDP chief and ex-CM Mehbooba Mufti said now that J&K's long-awaited rail link had become a reality, it was time for PM Modi to 'show statesmanship and compassion, especially towards those languishing in jails across India without serious charges'. Mehbooba urged him to consider releasing Kashmiri youth 'jailed on mere suspicion' after the April 22 terrorist attack on tourists in Pahalgam. 'The collective condemnation of the incident by people across the political spectrum reflects our shared rejection of violence…Let this Eid be a moment of healing and reconciliation,' she said.

Stalin says Ministry of Home Affairs' remarks on delimitation are ‘vague'
Seeing a 'sinister design' by the Narendra Modi-led government in Census 2027 and the subsequent delimitation, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Friday said the remarks of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs over the proposed delimitation exercise were 'vague' and further called for a 'clear Parliamentary commitment and a suitable Constitutional amendment.' Mr. Stalin also endorsed the edit published in The Hindu — 'Injustice in the delay - The announcement of the Census is welcome, but the delay is unjust'. On Thursday, a social media post of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said Union Minister Amit Shah had clarified on many occasions that in the delimitation exercise, concerns of southern States would be taken care of and discussed with all concerned at an appropriate time. 'The MHA claims that the concerns of affected States will be addressed. But these are vague remarks. What is needed is a clear Parliamentary commitment and a suitable Constitutional amendment,' Mr. Stalin said in a social media post. Recalling the abrogation of Article 370, Mr. Stalin said: 'The Union government spoke of restoring Statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. Elections were held. Assurances were given in the Supreme Court. Yet, Jammu and Kashmir remains a Union territory. This is the track record of the BJP we are dealing with.' If the Union government proceeded with delimitation based on the Census 2027, the democratic power of peninsular India would be 'reduced to irrelevance,' Mr. Stalin contended. Taking a swipe at his party's rival, AIADMK, over their electoral alliance with the BJP, Mr. Stalin, also the DMK president, said: 'Even if betrayers like the ADMK [AIADMK] choose to kneel before the BJP for their political survival, the people of Tamil Nadu, led by the DMK, will never allow our State to be punished for its progress. Tamil Nadu will fight! Tamil Nadu will win!' Claiming that the delay in the Census was 'no accident', Mr. Stalin further said that the delimitation plan was 'no coincidence' and the danger that he warned of was 'at our doorstep.' There was a 'sinister design' in how the BJP-led Union government was implementing the national Census and the subsequent delimitation, Mr. Stalin said: 'Developed States, especially in the non-Hindi speaking south, which followed population control norms, will now be punished. Meanwhile, States that disregarded population control for decades are set to gain more seats in Parliament. This unfair shift skews the federal balance and rewards irresponsibility.' He also recalled his warning about this 'design' and referred to the contention of senior Congress leader and former Union Minister P. Chidambaram on 'how this sleight of hand is unfolding.' Mr. Stalin emphasised: 'The time has come not only to be vigilant but also to craft counter-strategies to safeguard the South's voice.' The Census 2027 would form the basis for the next delimitation, replacing the 1971 data, he said, and further asserted that this gave the Union BJP-led government the means to 'restructure Parliamentary representation to its advantage, at the cost of the southern States.'
