Kharmel Cochrane Talks Casting Lily-Rose Depp In ‘Nosferatu' & Teases Emerald Fennell's ‘Wuthering Heights': 'Some English Lit Fans Are Not Going To Be Happy' — Sands Film Festival

'I had to text Lily-Rose Depp and say I'm sorry,' casting director Kharmel Cochrane explained this afternoon during a Q&A session at Scotland's Sands Film Festival.
The apology was on account of Cochrane dismissing Lily-Rose Depp as a serious contender for a leading role in Robert Eggers's Nosferatu. The vampire remake is one of the many buzzy titles Cochrane has cast in recent years. Her other credits include Saltburn, Rye Lane, and Bob Marley: One Love.

'I had said absolutely no way to Lily-Rose Depp,' Cochrane continued, breaking down the Nosferatu casting process.
'I didn't think she could act. I hadn't seen anything that I thought showed she could act. And I'm not even bothered by the nepotism thing. I think that's a whole other conversation. And then she auditioned. I was wrong. And I've got no shame in saying if I'm not right.'
Cochrane ultimately cast Depp alongside Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Nicholas Hoult, and Willem Dafoe. The film went on to become a surprise box office hit, crossing the $100 million mark and becoming Focus Features' second highest-grossing movie at the domestic box office, surpassing Ang Lee's Brokeback Mountain.
During this afternoon's session, Cochrane described Eggers as one of her staple directors with whom she feels most comfortable collaborating.
'It's Emerald Fennell, Alex Garland, Robert [Eggers], and Lena Dunham,' Cochrane said of her favorite directors. 'We've just got a really good thing going. And I genuinely feel safe in my workplace with them. I feel like I can say to them, 'Oh, look what if we do this,' and I'm not worried about getting fired, because that is a real fear, especially when you're on some of the studio stuff. I got fired recently. I don't want to work like that. I can't do my best work if I'm scared to offer an opinion.'
Cochrane also gave the audience at Sands an insight into her unique casting process, which has often been praised as dynamic and diverse. The casting vet said she never lets her work be entirely dictated by a film's script or a director's casting brief. She used the idea of a character's race to illustrate her process.
'If something is clearly written as white, for example, a script reads 'she tied her blonde hair back,' but there's no specific reason for it, I will just put people on tape,' Cochrane said. 'And then it's almost like I dare someone to question why I've done it, and they don't. So then it just becomes normal. Years ago, I would get people saying, 'did you read the brief?' And I'd say yeah, and this is my interpretation of it, just like when you can read a book.'
The casting vet said she is currently catching a lot of heat for her work on Fennell's forthcoming Wuthering Heights adaptation. Aussie-natives Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi have been cast in the film's central roles.
'There was one Instagram comment that said the casting director should be shot,' Cochrane said. 'But just wait till you see it, and then you can decide whether you want to shoot me or not. But you really don't need to be accurate. It's just a book. That is not based on real life. It's all art.'
Further teasing Fennell's Wuthering Heights, Cochrane said, 'there's definitely going to be some English Lit fans that are not going to be happy' in reference to the film's artistic interpretation of the source material.
'Wait until you see the set design because that is even more shocking,' Cochrane said. 'And there may or may not be a dog collar in it.'
Sands Film Festival runs until April 27.

Jennifer Lopez Wears $60 TKEES Flip-Flops: Shop Them Here

Wake up, everyone—Jennifer Lopez just dropped some new vacation pics! On August 1, took to Instagram to share some snapshots from her trip to Egypt, and let me tell ya, she looks ️‍🔥. More importantly: In multiple pics, she's rocking a pair of minimalist leather TKEES flip-flops that are (a) chic, (b) still in stock, and (c) actually affordable. A miracle! Here she is wearing 'em with a swimsuit and cover-up: And again with a cute lil sundress. Talk about versatility!! This isn't the first time has stepped out in these sweet metallic sandals, either. Just a few weeks ago, she was spotted wearing the same pair of TKEES while out and about in right around the same time, Jennifer Aniston sported a pair of brown TKEES with baggy jeans while walking around L.A. Need more evidence that TKEES are the It-girl sandal of choice? Kylie Jenner was also seen wearing a pair of black TKEES Lily Liners in Italy in early July (which, btw, are available on Amazon!). What I love about TKEES: the soft Brazilian leather, the minimalist silhouette, and—best of all—the cushioned insole for extra comfort with each step. TKEES are available to shop on the brand's website, as well as from Amazon, Saks Fifth Avenue, Revolve, Zappos, Bloomingdale's, Nordstrom, and more. There you'll find flip-flops in tons of styles (including the celeb-approved Lily sandal), including shades ranging from nudes and pigments to glitters and glosses. However! If you're looking to get exact Lily Metallics in Blink, then you'll likely have to buy them direct from TKEES, as they're sold out almost everywhere else! Flip-flop szn isn't over yet, so go score a pair of these cuties while you still can.

The Young and the Restless spoilers: Cane's antics force one person to go dark and plot deadly revenge?

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. It takes a special kind of person to eclipse The Young and the Restless' Victor (Eric Braeden) as the most infuriating person in Genoa City, but it looks like this new Cane Ashby (Billy Flynn) is that person. To be clear, Victor is our favorite character on the soap, but we aren't ignorant of the fact that he has a particular talent for getting under the skin of almost everyone on the show's canvas. Back to Cane. Since his not-so-triumphant return to The Young and the Restless, he's done nothing but enrage a number of guests at his French home. Lily (Christel Khalil) is furious with him for lying about being Aristotle Dumas and blames him for Damian's (Jermaine Rivers) death. Victor was already skeptical about Cane trying to take Chancellor before he became enraged with Cane for holding Nick (Joshua Morrow) and Sharon (Sharon Case) hostage in a storage room. And we'd venture to guess by the time this disastrous French trip is over, most people won't be happy to learn that he's been lying about their ability to leave Europe and return home sooner. Adding to all this, when Amy (Valarie Pettiford) and Nate (Sean Dominic) learn that their respective son and brother was murdered in France, likely by Cane's assistant Carter (Vincent Stalba), they'll probably blame Cane for Damian's demise. Along those lines, Holden (Nathan Owens) may be furious with his boss for the death of his bestie. Having said all of that, we can't help but imagine someone trying to kill Cane in revenge, or at the very least making his life incredibly miserable. We're talking about Cane being forced to watch everything he's accomplished in the business arena stripped from him, and maybe even having absolutely no one rallying for his cause, not even his children. While we have a strong suspicion that either Victor, Nick or a combination of the two is likely going to try to bring Cane to his knees, we think someone else may strive to accomplish beyond that, possibly going as far as murder. If we had to guess who that person is, we think it's either Amy or Nate. For Amy, she just reconnected with Damian after being estranged from him for years. Their reconciliation helped push her into trying an experimental treatment to beat her deadly disease, and she was hoping for more time with her only child upon his return to Genoa City. Now that he's dead, she won't get to have those moments. If she feels as if she has nothing to lose, she may make it her mission to make Cane pay, maybe with his life. Nate is an intriguing person to consider as someone who might try to kill Cane. He's a former doctor and once pledged to do no harm, so to see him want to eliminate an enemy is a bit ironic. Although Nate is usually levelheaded, losing a brother he was just starting to bond with may cause him to snap. Especially when you add the fact that Nate is bound to learn that Audra (Zuleyka Silver) was willing to cheat on him for the sake of satisfying Victor's scheme. Selfishly, we kind of want to see Nate go dark and plot against Cane. As a former doctor, he'd likely be able to come up with a few different ways to murder him, but make it look like a natural medical issue. If not Amy and not Nate, then allow us to propose the idea that the one who plots deadly revenge against Cane is Damian. Yes, Damian is allegedly dead. However, we've been holding onto a theory for a while now that Damian is actually alive and would at some point remerge onto the scene. Damian 'haunting' Cane to drive him mad before attempting to kill him could prove rather entertaining. Look, we know the last thing Genoa City needs is another murder mystery. However, Cane may have crossed too many people. New episodes of The Young and the Restless air weekdays on CBS. Episodes become available to stream on Paramount Plus the next day.

Missing ‘Love Island'? Consider Cracking Open ‘The Compound'

My obsession with Love Island came on suddenly. I had never cared about reality dating shows, but as cultural conversations around the contestants' style and mental health reached a fever pitch this season, I decided to tune in for an episode. Next thing I knew, I was a nightly viewer (and voting on my favorite couples). Then, when Season 7 came to a close a few weeks ago, I'm embarrassed to admit that my nights felt incomplete. My previously active 'I got a text!' group chat went quiet, and I had an extra hour on my hands before bed. I turned to my local bookstore for a solution. There, I found author Aisling Rawle's debut novel, The Compound. The Compound is the story of a reality television show in a somewhat recognizable, near-dystopian future. A war may be raging just beyond the fence of the desert oasis where the entire story takes place, but within it, nine women—including our protagonist, Lily—and eight men compete for brand partnerships, to make it through to the next round, and maybe even to find love. 'I had watched a lot of Love Island before writing The Compound,' Rawle confirms. 'One of the things that interested me about the show was the gender politics and how the contestants performed within their gender roles. I wanted to take some of the concepts of Love Island and tweak them so that it felt more sinister than sexy. As well as that, I was interested in bringing elements of influencer culture into the show. It was fun to have contestants second-guess what was genuine, and what was in pursuit of a brand deal.' The oft-repeated Bachelor prompt of Are you here for the right reasons? is just one of the many themes in The Compound that will feel familiar to any reality-television viewer. (That, along with the coupling up, prizes, dates, and breakfasts.) 'With the main character, Lily, I wanted to challenge the idea of the 'dumb blonde' who often draws judgment on these shows,' says Rawle. 'I wanted the reader to live in her head and prize her for what she was worth, and sit with their own assumptions.' Also in the mix are a classic bombshell, a few different villains, and plenty of frenemies.
