Illinois plays through a demanding stretch with a virus hindering multiple players
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Illinois wasn't showing any hard feelings toward its opponent when it declined to participate in a postgame handshake.
As several players deal with a virus, the Fighting Illini just wanted to make sure they didn't spread germs while congratulating Wisconsin after losing 95-74 to the 11th-ranked Badgers on Tuesday night.
'They don't need this,' Illinois coach Brad Underwood said after the game. 'In 38 years (as a head coach and assistant), I've never seen anything like what's gone through our team.'
Illinois (17-10, 9-8) remains in good position to earn a fifth consecutive NCAA Tournament bid. The Illini entered Tuesday as a projected No. 6 seed, according to Bracket Matrix.
'We're going to survive,' Underwood said. 'We're going to be fine. We're a really good basketball team. We've proved that.'
But the Illini are dealing with all sorts of setbacks on and off the court as they face the most demanding part of their schedule.
Freshman forward Morez Johnson Jr. broke his wrist while blocking a shot in a 79-65 loss to No. 14 Michigan State on Saturday, but most of the Illini's roster issues are due to illness rather than injury.
Tomislav Ivisic, the Illini's leading rebounder and second-leading scorer, came off the bench for the first time all season Tuesday as he tried to play while sick. Underwood said Ivisic didn't travel with the team, instead driving to Wisconsin on his own.
Ivisic finished with seven points and three rebounds in 21 minutes. He already dealt with mononucleosis and an ankle injury earlier this year, severely limiting his practice time.
Underwood said reserve forward Jake Davis wanted to play but got sick after pregame warmups.
'We don't know who we have from day to day,' Underwood said. 'I didn't know who I was starting today.'
Illinois' leading scorer Tuesday was Dra Gibbs-Lawhorn, who was sick earlier this month. After going scoreless and playing a total of 14 minutes in the three games leading up to this one, Gibbs-Lawhorn had 17 points and five assists against Wisconsin.
'Right now we're going through a stretch that's difficult,' Gibbs-Lawhorn said. 'But we're a good basketball team, and we know it.'
The stretch isn't getting any easier. Illinois takes a break from Big Ten competition and heads to New York to face No. 3 Duke at Madison Square Garden on Saturday.
'It's David playing Goliath in the next one,' Underwood said. 'We're going to show up and we're going to fight.'

After defeating New Mexico, No. 3 seed Baylor and No. 2 seed Arizona in the tournament, the Tigers reached the Elite Eight for only the second time in program history, and the first since 1980. Clemson fell to Alabama, 89-82, at Arena (Staples Center), denying the Tigers their first trip to a Final Four. Prior to that, Clemson and Alabama met four months earlier on Nov. 28 in Tuscaloosa, an 85-77 Tigers victory in the 2023 ACC/SEC Challenge. Last year, Clemson smothered No. 4 Kentucky in the ACC/SEC Challenge for a 70-66 win at Littlejohn Coliseum on Dec. 3 behind 11 points and 20 rebounds from Ian Schieffelin. Guard Jaeden Zackery led the Tigers in scoring with 13 points, and fans stormed the court after the victory. Clemson finished 27-7 overall last season and 18-2 in ACC play and was a No. 5 seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Tigers fell to McNeese State, 69-67, in a first-round upset in Providence, Rhode Island. Clemson was ranked No. 23 in the final USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll. The next Travis Hunter? Not quite, but Packers are working Bo Melton at WR and CB
GREEN BAY, Wis. — Packers wide receiver Bo Melton made it crystal clear that he's not switching to cornerback right now. If anything, he's trying to play both positions. Rich in wide receivers and perhaps lacking cornerback depth, head coach Matt LaFleur raised the idea last week of Melton working at cornerback. Why? The Packers have been impressed with Melton's special teams ability. He plays cornerback on their punt return unit, taking backward drops and getting physical with opposing fliers. He also plays flier on their punt coverage unit, so he has experience tackling in the open field. Advertisement Trying Melton at cornerback wasn't just a recent thought. Not long after Melton signed with the Packers in December 2022, LaFleur asked if he had ever played cornerback. Melton played the position in high school and sparingly at the beginning of his Rutgers career, but he was drafted by the Seahawks in the 2022 seventh round as a wideout. Videos of Melton working on his drops and ball skills with other defensive backs at Tuesday's mandatory minicamp practice took off online, but it's important to remember that this is a June experiment that might improve Melton's chances of making the 53-man roster, not a Jaire Alexander replacement plan. 'It's just something that came up,' Melton said after Wednesday's practice. 'I want to give it a shot. I'm still a wide receiver, so I'm not really transitioning to no cornerback, but if it works, it works.' 'I was like, 'Shoot, maybe this is bigger than what I thought,'' he said. 'I just went out there, like I said, gave it a shot. I kind of liked it a little bit.' Not only did Melton emphasize that he's not strictly a cornerback, he also made clear that he's no Travis Hunter. The No. 2 pick in this year's draft and reigning Heisman Trophy winner has taken the football world by storm. After playing both sides at Colorado, he'll do so for the Jaguars, too. 'Travis is a different athlete, as everybody knows,' said Melton, who himself might be the fastest player on the Packers. 'He's a Heisman Trophy winner, won a lot of awards. I'm not going to compare myself to somebody that's done that, but what I will say is I like to run for days.' Advertisement Melton played in only five games in 2023, but he was the team's first 100-yard receiver that season when he caught six catches for 105 yards and a touchdown in Minneapolis to keep the Packers' season afloat in Week 17. Despite being on the active roster all last season, however, Melton only caught eight passes for 91 yards. The Packers drafted wide receivers Matthew Golden in the first round and Savion Williams in the third, in addition to returning Jayden Reed, Romeo Doubs and Dontayvion Wicks. After the Monday release of Alexander, their top three are Keisean Nixon, Nate Hobbs and Carrington Valentine, with a slew of unproven players behind them like Kalen King, Kamal Hadden and Gregory Junior. If Melton were only playing wide receiver, he might still make the initial 53-man roster as the sixth wideout because of his special teams ability, but would struggle to crack the regular-season rotation. Why not try earning a spot higher on the depth chart at a different position in addition to competing at your original one? 'I think versatility is critical and it creates added value for that player,' LaFleur said. 'I just love everything about the guy, how he shows up every day ready to compete and give his best effort.' LaFleur even showed the team clips of Melton working out on Tuesday morning to demonstrate the coach's desired effort level. 'We just thought that if there is somebody that can potentially do both,' LaFleur said, 'he would be that guy.' Advertisement Melton is familiar with route concepts from his time playing receiver, so he has a better understanding of how to defend certain routes as a cornerback. He doesn't want to take advantage of his fellow wide receivers too much, however, so he doesn't look at the offense's practice script that he has access to as a wideout. 'I was watching film last night and he's pretty sticky in coverage for his first time out there,' safety Evan Williams said. 'Any time we can get a guy like that who's just an athlete out there, it's pretty cool, in my opinion, for him to be as versatile as he is and play both sides of the ball.' Despite the encouraging early feedback, Melton said he's still not the best cornerback in his family. That would be Max, his younger brother, who was drafted by the Cardinals in the second round last year to play corner. 'That was definitely confusing,' quarterback Jordan Love said. 'During the jog-through, I was mentioning that it looked like Bo was a receiver out there (wearing his typical white No. 80 jersey), but he was actually playing DB. So I was trying not to throw it to him, but nah, it was fine and they actually switched jerseys and gave him a little green jersey later on.' 'I actually caught a pass and … I turned out, took a few steps and saw someone do a fly-by out of my peripheral,' tight end Tucker Kraft said. 'I turned around. I'm like, who was that? Like a wide receiver just decided to mess around and come tag off on me or something like that, but no, yeah, Bo was out there taking snaps at defense. I was very surprised, to say the least.' Melton said that teammates learned he'd be practicing at cornerback when he stood beside them during individual drills on Tuesday. I started putting bets on it, so people owe me money now … it was fun just to see everybody's comments. I don't got Twitter. I've got Instagram, so I probably shouldn't have Twitter. I know that joint was probably jumping.' Jumping it was, but as those who made the decision clarified, this is simply a trial run to see if a player everyone in the building already loves can add even more value to the Packers this season. 'There are very few guys who have done it in our league,' general manager Brian Gutekunst said. 'There have been a few and when a guy's able to do that, it certainly helps your football team. Bo is everything we want in a football player out there as far as his ability as a receiver, certainly on (special) teams. If he's able to add to his arsenal, that makes him really, really valuable to us.'

With no players left from last season's team photo, Baylor begins summer practice with new roster
WACO, Texas — Baylor coach Scott Drew had plenty of players for the first practice of the summer Wednesday, about two months after the team photo from last season was widely circulated on social media with an X marked over all 14 of those players since none was returning to the Bears. Only four of those players exhausted their college eligibility. Nine others left in the transfer portal and one-and-done guard VJ Edgecombe could become Baylor's highest pick ever in the NBA draft later this month. 'Guys you didn't want to lose and were valuable, we haven't had many that we've lost. Whenever you do, that just tears at a coach, because you feel like you didn't do your job,' Drew said this week. 'With the portal, I think we've all gotten used to a lot more turnover in a hurry, and not to take things necessarily personal.' The Bears rebuilt their roster with eight transfers and a four-player signing class with a five-star prospect and the son of a NBA champion. Among the 14 players at the first practice was Cameron Carr, the former Tennessee guard who transferred to Baylor in the middle of last season long after that team photo session. One of the former Bears was guard Robert Wright, who averaged 11.5 points and 4.2 assists a game as a freshman last season and had reportedly agreed to a lucrative NIL deal to stay before transferring to BYU for an even bigger package. 'You know people are going to leave. Rob, obviously, was someone we had an agreement with. When you make an agreement, you think you're done,' Drew said, without getting into any specifics. 'Obviously that was a surprise to us, but again, the staff did a great job of putting together a roster and team. That's part of, hopefully, the House settlement, where you get to a point where you know who's on your team and when they're locked in, they're locked in.' The eight incoming transfers have more than 500 of games played combined, including guards Dan Skillings, who played 100 games over three years for Cincinnati, and JJ White, who started 75 of 99 games at Omaha over the same period. Juslin Bodo Bodo is a 7-foot post from Cameroon, started all 71 of his games for NCAA Tournament team High Point the past two seasons. Obi Agbim, a 6-3 guard, was the Mountain West newcomer of the year after averaging 17.6 points and 3.4 assists in 29 games last season for Wyoming. Five-star prospect Tounde Yessoufou, a small forward from St. Joseph High School in California, leads the signing class that also includes Andre Iguodala II, whose father was a four-time champion over 19 NBA seasons with four teams; Italian forward Maikcol Perez and big man May Soyoye. Baylor, Gonzaga and Houston are the only teams to win at least one game in each of the past six NCAA Tournaments, though the Bears have lost in the second round the past four years since their national championship in 2021. Drew and his staff will get an early look at the new squad with Baylor representing the United States at the World University Games next month in Germany. 'Any year you get a foreign tour, it's huge. ... Since we're returning 0.0 (percent of our) scoring, this give us all an opportunity,' Drew said. 'The games will be good for those that can play in it. But the practices will be great for everyone. And then, the one thing everybody leaves out is you do these team-bonding activities. There's nothing better than being overseas, that really brings you together a lot more than when you have all the distractions you do in the United States.'
