Koraput: A joint team of the regional transport office and the labour department in Malkangiri district conducted a surprise inspection on Thursday morning of a private bus which was on way to Junagarh in Kalahandi district from Hyderabad after allegations of inhumane transportation of migrant workers from western Odisha surfaced.
The bus, identified as 'Sri Balaji', was intercepted near MV-16 village. The officials found that the vehicle was carrying 110 passengers despite having a seating capacity of only 35. Many of the passengers were migrant labourers from Balangir, Kalahandi and Nabarangpur districts, some accompanied by entire families.
"Based on complaints of overloading, we conducted a raid and found gross violations of safety norms.
Passengers were packed in an inhuman manner," said Bhagirathi Naik, regional transport officer, Malkangiri. "The bus owner was penalized as per law and our inspections on private buses will continue in the coming days to curb such practices."
Sources said that the migrants were being transported 'like cattle' by labour contractors and middlemen, who reportedly charged nearly double the standard bus fare. The raid comes just two days after a Hyderabad-bound bus was involved in an accident at Bijaghat, about 8 km from Malkangiri town, raising alarm over the safety of migrant transport.

In the aftermath of the raid, the labour department arranged for an alternative bus to return the stranded workers to their respective villages. District labour officer (Malkangiri) Purnima Duruka confirmed that her department has requested counterparts in Balangir and Nabarangpur to take legal action against the middlemen involved in the trafficking of labourers.
Meanwhile, local labour unions welcomed the crackdown and demanded regular checks to prevent the exploitation of workers. "Had these inspections been conducted earlier, such blatant violations would not have occurred," said a union representative.
"We urged the authorities to maintain consistent oversight of buses headed to Hyderabad," he added.

Gujarat court denies maintenance to woman who willingly resigned from job

The JMFC court in Rajkot had first rejected the woman's request for maintenance in March 2023 because she was gainfully employed. Four months after this order, she resigned from her job and filed another application seeking maintenance, but the court dismissed the second application as well. The couple engaged in the legal battle got married in 2017. While the woman is from Rajkot, the husband lives in Gandhinagar. She sought interim maintenance from her husband, claiming that he was earning Rs 1.50 lakh per month. The husband established that his salary was Rs 66,000, while the wife was earning Rs 31,000 per month. He also claimed that his wife was a careerist, and she did not want a child, and therefore left her matrimonial home. Moreover, the woman had several FDs in her name, and she admitted that she had no other liability. Four months after the court rejected the woman's application for interim maintenance, she voluntarily resigned from her job and filed another application on the grounds that she was unemployed and did not have any regular income. After perusing the resignation letter and relieving order, the court said, "The applicant left her job willingly. She holds a high degree and was getting a good salary of Rs 31,000 in this job… Considering all the circumstances, it does not appear proper to grant the applicant's application at this stage. A final decision on her application will be taken after the final hearing by considering all the evidence."

ICE agents income: What is the average annual salary of Trump's immigration task force?

Image credits: Getty Images Donald Trump has made multiple big and controversial decisions ever since his second term as President began. From imposing reciprocal tariffs to enforcing the immigration crackdown, he has a certain agenda that he has been fulfilling. While many of the Trump administration comrades have become popular faces in the news, the ICE officials are those soldiers of the Trump army that have quickly become one of the most talked about people in the world due to their constant arrests and raids on immigrant families. Currently, the actions of ICE officials have been facing staunch protests in downtown LA where people are demanding they leave. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials work for one of the most visible and controversial branches of federal law enforcement where they are tasked with roles of tracking human trafficking networks and cybercrime rings, managing customs inspection, detaining individuals without documentation and coordinating deportations. These officials are performing a duty, but they are being questioned and condemned by the people daily as their duty leads to the upheaval of their lives as they know it. Thus, a question has been quietly making rounds: How much do ICE agents actually earn? How much do ICE agents earn? Image credits: Getty Images While some ICE officials are placed at border crossings and airports, others work in field offices across the US or even abroad. According to O*NET Online, a U.S. Department of Labour Data Service, roles similar to ICE agents such as criminal investigators and special agents receive an average annual salary of $79,970. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Dream Kitchen Within Reach? With more experience and qualifications, they can advance to GS-13 where they can receive $76,687 or more per year. Those in top-tier roles like supervision or assigned to high-cost regions receive even more with locality adjustments and overtime. How to become an ICE agent ? Veterans and those with significant law enforcement or military experience can qualify without the requirement of traditional academic credentials. Jobs for ICE and other positions are expected to grow by 5-9% through 2026, creating approximately 7,500 vacancies. With ICE itself employing more than 20,000 people in over 400 U.S. offices and 47 countries, joining the team could be a beneficial career move.
