Initial FPI rankings place Florida in College Football Playoff picture
Florida's return to national prominence in 2025 appears likely, with DJ Lagway leading the offense. ESPN's recent relaunch of the College Football Power Index has the Gators among the top 20 teams in contention for an NCAA Championship.
Florida sits at No. 18 on the 2025 College FPI with a 14.3 power index. ESPN projects the Gators to finish the 2025 season with a 6.4-5.6 record and gives UF a 68.2% chance to reach six wins (bowl eligibility). But Florida also plays the toughest schedule in the country, according to ESPN, which means a seven-win season could be enough to sneak into the playoffs. Florida's CFP odds sit at a surprisingly high 14.5%, and 0.7% odds to win the national championship are the 19th best.
"FPI is a predictive rating system that estimates each FBS team's strength (in points per game relative to the national average) on offense, defense and special teams, making adjustments for starters lost, recruiting talent and other personnel changes," Paine reminds us. "Those numbers are then plugged into the schedule, and everything is simulated 20,000 times to track each team's odds of winning its conference, making the playoff and advancing through to the national title."
FPI projects the SEC to send 4.6 teams to the College Football Playoff this year, with Alabama, Georgia and Texas being the strongest candidates. Auburn, LSU, Ole Miss, Tennessee and Texas A&M make up the next tier of SEC teams, with South Carolina and Oklahoma on the outer edge. Florida is behind all of them, but a few key wins could change things. ESPN highlights an Oct. 4 matchup with Texas and the Georgia game on Nov. 1 as the most anticipated games on Florida's schedule, ranking Nos. 6 and 15 on the national schedule.
The biggest reason for optimism is Florida being ranked inside the top 20 on both offense and defense. The Gators' 7.0 offensive FPI ranks No. 14 and is the result of a 27-spot jump over the offseason. On defense, a 6.4 rating is good for No. 16 in the country, one spot up from the last update.

Can Jaylen Brown lead the Boston Celtics next season?

Can Jaylen Brown lead the Boston Celtics next season? With Jayson Tatum ruled out of the 2025-26 season, Jaylen Brown could find himself stepping into a leading role for the Boston Celtics. The Georgia native has long been Boston's "1B" next to Tatum, leading fans to wonder what a team led by Brown could look like. Now, it would appear they're going to get their answer. Brown is an elite scorer, especially in the mid-range and around the rim. He's also improved as a playmaker in recent years. Still, there are concerns surrounding his decision-making and how he keeps control of the ball in traffic. As such, there will be a lot of questions surrounding his ability to thrive as a primary offensive option over the course of the season. Fortunately for Celtics fans, Brown continues to find ways of elevating his game and answering any questions asked of him. In a recent episode of ESPN's "First Take", Stephen A. Smith, Monica McNutt and Marcus Morris Sr. discussed Tatum's injury and the pressure that will now fall on Brown's shoulders. The trio shared their thoughts on whether Brown can lead a team, and more importantly, whether he will still be on the Celtics roster by the start of the season. Former Notre Dame catcher Carson Tinney could land at Florida

Former Notre Dame catcher Carson Tinney could land at Florida Former star Notre Dame catcher Carson Tinney may soon have a new home. Per Baseball America's Jacob Rudner, Florida is in the mix for the former Fighting Irish backstop, who hit .348 with 17 home runs and 53 RBIs as a sophomore with the Fighting Irish. He is one of the more intriguing players currently in the transfer portal. This past season, the Gators used Luke Heyman and Brody Donay behind the plate. An injury to Heyman near the end of the year forced Donay to become the full-time catcher the rest of the way, but his defense was an issue. Could the Gators shift him to first base or designated hitter? UF did bring in JUCO catcher AJ Malzone, but landing Tinney would be a real coup. It helps the cause that the Gators landed former ND pitcher Ricky Reeth, whose pitches were caught by Tinney in South Bend this past season. Losing Tinney was a tough blow for the Irish. He was the team's best player and a centerpiece of Shawn Stiffler's rebuild in South Bend. Merab Dvalishvili not interested in taking 'big risk' of fighting Alexander Volkanovski

Merab Dvalishvili not interested in taking 'big risk' of fighting Alexander Volkanovski Merab Dvalishvili isn't willing to chase UFC dual-champ status as long as Alexander Volkanovski holds the featherweight title. Bantamweight champion Dvalishvili (19-4 MMA, 12-2 UFC) rematches Sean O'Malley (18-2 MMA, 10-2 UFC) in Saturday's UFC 316 (pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+) main event at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. Many fighters have opted to move up a division in attempt to capture a second UFC belt, most recently Islam Makhachev and Ilia Topuria. However, Dvalishvili admits that Volkanovski (27-5 MMA, 14-4 UFC) may not be the best stylistic matchup for him to attain that goal. "I mentioned a couple of times that I don't want to fight with Alexander Volkanovski because he's way stronger than me," Dvalishvili said to Volkanovski on FOX Sports Australia. "I don't want to take a big risk. I'm good. Even if this weight cut sucks, I'd rather kill myself to make this weight and be comfortable here. I'm good. I don't want to (fight him). Then we can cook peacefully and wish each other the best." Volkanovski featured Dvalishvili in one of his "Cooking with Volk" VLOGS this past year, and the pair plan on collaborating again. "I appreciate that, mate. The respect is mutual, anyway," Volkanovski responded to Dvalishvili. "You're a legend. I can't wait to see you, and good luck this weekend."
